The main character is Theodore, Theo for short. Theo loves space. He wants to now everything about it. Theo is especially interested when he learns about The Voyager. The Voyager is a space shuttle that is about to be launched and it has a new special feature, but I’ll get to that later. Theo’s main hobbies are riding his bike, hanging out with Kenny, his best friend, and building models (mostly planes).

Janet is Theo’s sister. As Theo says “she’s a crack up, that Janet”. Janet is older than Theo. She bullies Theo a lot, but I guess that is what older siblings do. She also shows her good side in the book. She’s not all that bad.

Rosemary is Theo and Janet’s mom. She is very caring and tries her best to understand his problems. She refuses to talk about Theo’s dad even though Theo is very curious.

Theo’s dad (Vince) is MIA (missing in action), or at least Theo thinks he is, until the end of the book, when Theo learns otherwise.

JeeBee is Theo’s grandma. She is very understanding and when she discovers that Theo is curious about his dad, JeeBee secretly tells Theo about him.

Kenny is Theo’s best friend. He is a goof ball! He always jokes around, plays tricks and acts silly. Theo is jealous of Kenny because Kenny has a dad and Theo doesn’t.

There are many, many settings in this book, so I’ll just name the most important ones. First, Theo spends a lot of time at school, mainly in Mr. Meyer’s science class. Another setting is JeeBee’s house. When Theo is there he spends his time talking to JeeBee about Theo‘s dad. Theo obviously spends a lot of time at his own house doing a variety of things. Lastly this story takes place in 1977.

There are two conflicts. The first conflict is that Theo can’t figure out what to do for his project that Mr. Meyers assigned the class. In their project the students have to take a picture of what they think is most important about Earth and then share with the class. For example, Kenny records his dog howling. The project is supposed to imitate a golden record that is being taken on The Voyager. The golden record is a message in pictures and sounds for any other life forms to discover.

Theo wants to choose french fries as the thing he thinks is most important about earth, but Janet ended up eating them before he could take a picture of the french fries. Theo also wanted to choose a huge chalk drawing , but the rain washed it away. (Spoiler Alert!!!) Theo finally ends up choosing People Ask Questions. Theo recorded his family, friends, the librarian’s whisper, a runner, Janet’s huff, and Kenny’s goofy squawk all saying, “What do you think is the most important thing about Earth?” For his picture he simply wrote “We Ask Questions.”

The second problem is about Theo’s dad. He went to the Vietnam War and never came back, which means he is M.I.A. (Missing in Action). Theo is curious about the whole thing. Where is he? Why is he the only M.I.A. that has never been found? Why is Theo’s whole family secretive about his father? JeeBee has tried to help, but the only resources she has are old letters that Theo’s father sent while he was away at war. Theo can’t find an answer to his main question: Is his dad really M.I.A. or is he something else? In the end, Theo finds out, by snooping around, that his dad only lived an hour away from him. His dad did this to protect his family from his bad temper which was a result of being in the war. At first Theo was really mad. But at the very end Theo and his dad get together and all of Theo’s questions are answered!!!
