Early life

• He was born on 31 December 1941. He was born in his Grandmothers home in Govan in south west Glasgow.

• He has a younger brother called Martin.

• His father was called Alexander Beaton Ferguson and was a plater’s helper in the ship building industry and his mother was called Elizabeth Hardie.

• He attended Broomloan Primary School and later Govan High School.

• He married his wife Cathy in 1966. When she first met him she thought he was a criminal.

• They have three sons called: Mark, Darren and Jason although only Darren has followed in his father’s footsteps of being a professional football manager.

Football career.

• During his Football career he played for six different teams: Queens Park, St Johnstone, Dunfermline Athletic, Rangers, Falkirk and Ayr United.

• He played his first football game as professional when he was just 16 years old.

• He moved clubs a lot because he was rarely starting games. He moved to Dunfermline and there became their first choice forward.

Dunfermline career

• He signed for Dunfermline in 1965 and left in 1967.

• During his Dunfermline career he nearly won the league and cup double but in the cup final he was dropped because of a poor performance in the previous game.

• Dunfermline narrowly lost the final of the cup 3-2 to Celtic and in the league they missed out on the trophy by 1 point.

• In his career at Dunfermline he scored 66 goals in 89 games.

• In 1965-66 he was joint top scorer in the season with Joe McBride of Celtic. In that season he scored 45 goals in 51 games. In the league he was top scorer with 31 goals.

• He was knighted in 1999.• Manchester United are one of the teams in
