8 Steps of Genocide

Classification: Black Africans vs. Arab Africans.

Symbolization: Skin color was the most significant symbolization

Dehumanization : Darfurians were kept as slaves

8 Steps Continued …

Organization: Janjaweed had tanks and were heavily armed. They had strategic planning as to what village they would attack

Polarization: Al Bashir said he would protect the black africans but obviously did not. They also did not make it very easy for humanitarian groups to help. Because of this many died of starvation and disease.

8 Steps Continued …

Preparation: Many people were put into refuge camps

Extermination: Villages were burned and looted and the people terrorized and killed.

Denial: The Sudanese gives false evidence of the amount of people killed and still continue to reject accusations of genocide

Global Response

Between June and December 2004, the UN Security Council became more deeply engaged with Darfur. They called for a political agreement to end the fighting, gave the government of Sudan 30 days to disarm the Janjawid and start bringing its leaders to justice,

Justice for Victims

In 2009 Bashir , the Janjaweed leader , and Saudese minister of state , Ahmad Haron were issued arrest warants
