The hand wheel is on the right side of the machine. It manually controls the up and down movement of the machine needle.
HAND WHEEL
The spool pin and cap holds the spool of thread on the machine. They can either be horizontal like the one pictured in this presentation or vertical.
SPOOL PIN AND CAP
The bobbin winder tension disc keeps the spool of thread tight so the thread will wind smoothly on the bobbin. Learn to thread your sewing machine by clicking here.
BOBBIN WINDER TENSION CONTROL
The take up lever pulls the thread off of the spool to feed to the needle and tightens the stich.
TAKE UP LEVER
This keeps the needle thread tight so the stiches will be smooth and tight. The needle thread tension dial keeps too much needle thread from going on the back side of the fabric and creating a “rats nest.” In this picture it is on the front of the machine but on your machine it will be located on the top.
Click here to find out how the tension control works.
NEEDLE THREAD TENSION CONTROL DIAL
The needle is the pointed part that carries the thread through the fabric to make a stich.
The bobbin is the disk that holds thread which anchors the needle thread stiches.
The presser foot surrounds the needle and holds the fabric down against the feed dog. Click here to find out what to do if your presser foot falls off.
