Take a look at the before resumes on pages 6, 8 and 10. You'll see that each person didn't think he or shehad many skills - at first. Ask yourself if you have a limited view of your skills. If so, study these examples. Then use the skill lists and sample sentences on pages 19-29 to put more skill descriptions in your resume.Analyze want ads and use The Dictionary of Occupational Titles to identify even more of your skills.

As you identify your skills and fully describe them - your confidence will go up. You'll also be betterprepared to talk about your skills in an interview. Most employers use your resume as a guide to askyou questions in an interview. If you have a weak resume - guess what - you'll have weak interviews. If you have a strong resume - you'll have strong interviews. Looking at the before and after resumes, which would you rather have during an interview?

Functional skills can be used in several different jobs. For example, managing a drive-up window atMcDonalds requires departmental coordination and support. This describes a "function" or duty of managinga drive-up window. This same skill is transferable and can be used in a computer system administrationposition. For example, you may coordinate with department managers and other staff to troubleshootsystems. In this instance, you might label the McDonald's experience - Departmental Coordination andSupport - which matches a computer system administration position much better than Drive-Up Clerk.

If you have retrained for a new field your top qualification will probably be your education - if you don'thave related work experience. Therefore, you must fully describe and market your education and combine itwith functional skills gained from past work experience. If you have work experience that matches the jobyou want - use your education to backup and strengthen your skills.

In this booklet I've hit the most important steps to prepare a resume for Computer Information students. For more detailin: completing objective statements, how to list dates of employment, how to write and edit sentences, how to tap thehidden job market and interview well I recommend you refer to my 256 page book, Proven Resumes and ConfidenceBuilders. Most people making a career change need skill based resumes that show how their education fits with past experience tomake them well qualified for their current job objective. You'll learn how to create this type of resume. Many of the pages in this booklet have instructions at the top of each page or in the left and right hand columns.Following the next two pages on self-confidence issues, you'll find six pages that contain three sets of before and afterresumes. Read the instructions in the columns. When you're finished reading these examples turn to page 12 for thenext step.

Instructors - do not put yourself or your institution at risk of litigation by duplicating. See Notice on page 2. Do not make handouts from book or booklets. ü Stretching Your Comfort ZoneAlmost everyone experiences some degree of self-doubt when writing a resume or looking for a job. One reason is that many people havejob titles that are much weaker than the actual work they do. Even though they've had a lot of responsibility they feel guilty describingthese skills in a resume. Many also worry that prospective employers will think they're lying about their experience.Terry had worked in Retail Sales for over 5 years. Her title was Cashier although she supervised a department with sales of $2 millionannually. Terry wants to market her supervisory experience in combination with her Computer Science Degree so that she will be consideredfor promotion into management. I recommended she label this part of her background Operations / Staff Management. On one hand, this description built her confidence. On the other hand, it made her feel scared because she had never had a job title that sounded thisimportant. She told me, "Gee, I know this is true but it still feels like I'm exaggerating or lying. What if the employer checks and findsout my title was Cashier?" To help Terry feel comfortable with this new description we included her actual job title in her work historysection like this: Operations / Staff Management (cashier), Kids'R Us 1995 - Present. Like most people training for a new field you mayhave job titles that don't relate. If so, use headings that show how your skills do relate.

Did You Do It? Can You Do It Again?Having spent more than 6,000 hours writing resumes with clients, I continually hear people express similar feelings as Terry. As you readthe examples in this booklet be aware of your feelings. You, too, may feel uncomfortable as you develop stronger descriptions of yourskills. If part of you feels like you are lying or exaggerating ask yourself these questions. "Did I do this? Can I do it again? Are myestimates and what I'm saying accurate?" If you answer, "Yes" to all three questions then use the stronger descriptions.

Employers Want to Know If You Have The Skills They NeedMost college students and people making career moves need skill based resumes. They need resumes that de-emphasize weak job titles, downplay gaps in employment, or minimize lack of experience in a certain field. A strong skill based resume pulls together experiencefrom other fields and shows an employer how that experience relates to his or her needs. People who are training in a new field, needskill based resumes that focus on and maximize this training, while combining it with transferable skills from past work experience.Even though it's hard to believe, employers are more concerned about your skills and abilities, rather than your actual job title or theparticular fields you've worked in. They want to be convinced that you have the skills to do the job. When you do this effectively theylose most of their concern, and often all of their concern, about your specific job titles or industry experience.

Looking For A Job Is Hard WorkIf you're like me, and thousands of job seekers I've worked with, you probably feel confident some of the time and at other times feel likea failure. One day you may feel like you can go out and get any job you want. Other days you may ask yourself who you're kiddingand feel like no one would hire you. Day to day, even hour to hour, your feelings can fluctuate. Looking for a job, changing careers, and marketing ourselves is hard work - and can cause self-doubt or negative feelings about ourselves to surface.Conducting a successful job search requires active, sustained effort in an optimistic frame of mind. A frame of mind that many job seekersnever obtain or lose as they experience rejection. The strategies you'll learn in this booklet will increase your success rate and cut rejectionfrom employers. But, learning these strategies is only one side of the coin. If you don't learn to stretch your comfort zone and believe in this new imageof yourself you may fail. If you are experiencing a lot of self-doubt you may choose not to use these strategies and instead create a weakresume or procrastinate for long periods without looking for a new job. To achieve maximum success in using this booklet you mustdevelop a broader view of your skills as well as a confident frame of mind. Most job seekers must learn to believe that they do indeedpossess many skills and that their skills are at a higher level than they originally thought.

ü Awareness Is The First StepAnytime you learn something new, awareness is the first step you must take to change your behavior. For example, people who want toquit smoking must become aware of what makes them want to smoke. They must become aware of times when they don't even realizethey're smoking. In a similar fashion, you need to become aware of your behaviors and feelings as you look for a job.Say, you wake up one morning and decide to write your resume. Your next thought is remembering a time when your boss reprimandedyou and said you were a poor worker. This in turn makes you feel anxious and depressed. Then you think, "This job is probably all Ican get anyway so why even try?" And guess what? You don't work on your resume.Becoming aware of your thoughts and feelings and how they affect your behavior is critical to job search success. It's been estimated thatwe process up to 60,000 thoughts each day. That's almost 22 million thoughts per year. Until three years ago my self-esteem was verylow. Probably 50% to 75% of the thoughts I had about myself were negative. Even at 50% that's 11 million negative thoughts a year.Realizing this was very powerful for me. No wonder I never believed in myself. No wonder it was hard for me to change or accomplishmy goals. I had a huge mountain of negativity about myself that directed and controlled my life. Before you go on, I'd like you to listsome of the thoughts you've had about yourself over the last few days or months when you've considered changing jobs or writing aresume.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

How many of the thoughts you wrote down were positive? How many were negative? Did you feel anxious doing this exercise? If youfelt anxious or listed several negative thoughts about yourself - it's those feelings and thoughts that can hamper your job search.Becoming aware of them is the first step to changing your behavior and achieving job search success. Somewhere I heard the saying,"Doubt Your Doubts." What a wonderful saying. When we're in the midst of feeling negative how often do we stop and ask ourselves,"Do I really need to feel this way? Is this really true?" Many times our imagination is much worse than reality.I remember going into a Barnes and Noble store one night. I was dressed in my sweats and not feeling too hot. I had been wanting tocontact Barnes and Noble to do an author signing but kept procrastinating because I kept thinking. "Why would they want me?" Then Isaw a flyer for a signing by a competitive author. My first response was, "See they want her, they don't want you." I walked throughthe store with my head slumped, feeling like a nobody. Old programming from critical parents had kicked in and I felt powerless to stopit. Feeling depressed I went home, pulled the covers over my head and went to sleep as a way to escape my feelings. In the morning, Ifelt better and said to myself, "Hey, my book is just as good as hers. People always tell me my presentation is better. I'm going to calland see if I can get scheduled." I called and was scheduled for several author signings. Zig Ziglar uses the acronym, FEAR, to describethis process. FEAR stands for False Evidence Appearing Real. That night at Barnes and Noble my fears certainly felt real but in realitywere false.

Awareness + Goals + Action = SuccessAs my story illustrates, becoming aware let me question my negative thoughts. Once I was able to do that I could then focus on my goaland take action to accomplish it. You, and only you, determine the degree of success you achieve in your life and your career. Becomingaware, questioning negative thoughts, identifying your goals and then taking action are four steps that will ensure your success in usingthis booklet. Tony Robbins, author of Awaken the Giant Within and Personal Power (an excellent videotape series) talks about the painand pleasure we link to any activity. When we link more pain to an activity than pleasure we move away from and avoid that activity. When we link more pleasure to an activity we move toward that activity. I had certainly linked more pain than pleasure to contactingBarnes and Noble. Ask yourself what areas of your job search you have linked pain to. Then finds ways to link more pleasure to themso that you can accomplish your career goals. Now, it's time to begin learning how to create a dynamic, skill based resume that willincrease your confidence and land you the job you want. Turn the page and read the instructions in the left and right hand columns.

Turn to page 14 and 15 to see a condensed version of the 6 Steps listed above.Below, we'll explain each step.

Step 1 à List All Your SkillsTurn to page 14 and read Jon's story at the top of the page. Notice, in Step 1 that Jon listed the skills hegained from his Computer Science program and his work experience at PDQ Garage Doors and in the Army.

Instructors - do not put yourself or your institution at risk of litigation by duplicating. See Notice on page 2. Do not make handouts from book or booklets. Step 2 à Label Skills With Functional Headings ToSound Like The Positions You WantIn Step 2, Jon labeled his skills with functional headings. Notice that Customer Service is labeled Customer Support,Squad Leader is labeled Team Leader and Training of Infantry Personnel is labeled Staff Supervision. Thesefunctional headings are stronger, sound more supportive and targeted for skills utilized in computer systemadministration positions.

As you select your functional headings, think about the primary skill required for the job you want. Be sure to includesupportive skills and label them with functional headings. For example, a Network Administrator's primary skill areawill be training in network systems and any related work experience. In addition, a Network Administrator may haveresponsibility for duties such as user training, departmental coordination, technical documentation, purchasing andinventory control. Including supportive skills that match the job you want creates a stronger and more well-roundedimage of your abilities. Later, you'll get more information on how to select your functional headings.

Step 3 à Analyze Ad or Job Posting and List Skills RequiredRead the ad in Step 3 on page 14. You'll notice that we've underlined the skills requested in the ad. We alsoidentified them as hard or soft skills. Hard skills are those skills you can see someone perform - like using acomputer. Soft skills are skills you can't really see someone perform - like prioritizing or problem solving.

When you label soft skills like Team Player, use a heading that shows exactly what you mean. For example, being ateam player should occur in any job or any setting. Therefore, the heading - Team Player doesn't have a lot ofmeaning. Compare it to - Departmental / Team Coordination. Which is better?

Step 4 à Select Best Headings to Match Ad or Job PostingOnce you've analyzed want ads or job postings and identified specific skills employers are looking for - you're ready toselect your best functional headings to match those skills. Look at Step 4 on page 15 and you'll see that Jon checked6 of his best functional headings to match the ad.

Remember, the headings you select should present a well-rounded picture of your skills and make you look qualifiedfor the job you want.

Step 5 à Describe Each HeadingOnce you've selected your functional headings you're ready to write short statements to describe each one. Thesefunctional headings will form the body of your resume. Look at Step 5 on page 15 and you'll see how Jon candescribe each of his headings.

Step 6 à Create Your Objective, Education andEmployment SectionsTake a look at Step 6 on page 15. You'll see three paragraphs that describe what to put in your Objective, Educationand Employment sections.

Now you're ready to begin completing worksheets that will take you through each of the 6 Steps. Turn to page 16and read the instructions at the top of the page.

Be specific and slant your functional headings toward your field or position. Many people use heading s like - Organizational Skills, Leadershipand Communication Skills for the body of their resumes. These headings are too soft, too general and don't grab employers. Are these headingsbetter - Project Management, Team Leader and Technical Documentation / User Support? Study how we've relabeled skills with functional headingsin Step 2 on the facing page.

Your Objective StatementIn your Objective Statement name the type ofposition you want and list 2 to 3 of your top

skills or qualifications.Employers want to know what you can and willdo for them. Review the objective statements

shown in the after resumes.

Your College EducationYou have learned a lot of skills that are neededin a variety of jobs. But you must show how

the skills you've learned in college relate to thejobs employers have open.

For example, the ad asks for a Computer ScienceDegree. Highlighting the related components

from that degree which match the skills neededby the employer is much stronger than

simply having a heading ofComputer Science Degree.

Your Employment HistoryIf you are changing careers, have an unrelated

work history, or have training in a field in whichyou have no experience a chronological resumeprobably won't work well for you. Listing each

job in order with dates of employment will drawattention to these weaknesses. Listing your skills

followed by a condensed work history worksmuch better.

See the after resume examples.

Read the list of skills and knowledge on page 18 that you have gainedfrom completing your Computer Science Degree. Check off each skill orarea of knowledge that you've learned and list them below. Add any areasyou've learned that aren't on the list and put them below.

To describe your work experience, read pages 19 to 29. These worksheetsinclude skills and sentences for 20 different career fields. Check any skills orsentences that match your background and list them below.

Even though you may not have held these jobs, these lists can give youideas to describe your work experience. To identify more skills, analyzehelp wanted ads or job postings. The Dictionary of Occupational Titles alsoprovides thousands of job descriptions that can be used to identify more ofyour skills. Answering the 12 Questions that start on page 32 will help youto create your own skill lists and sentences and help you to strengthenthose that you check on pages 19 to 29.

On the following pages you'll find worksheets for each of the 6 Steps shown on pages 14 and 15.

Now it's time to label your education and work experience with functionalheadings like Jon did in Step 2 on page 14. It may save you time togroup similar skills together, then label each group of skills with afunctional heading.

Write the functional headings you'll use to describe your college classesbelow. For example, coursework in Introductory Networking and experienceTroubleshooting Campus Computers can be labeled Network Administration /Troubleshooting (see example below). This functional heading is a bettermatch for a corporate Network Administrator position.

Now, go back through the skills you checked on pages 19 to 29. Selectthe strongest skills as your functional headings and list them below. Forexample, a group of skills might be customer service, counter sales andcashiering. When and How To Use Transferable Skill Statements

When you use transferable skill statements make sure they are specific, not general. For example, read the before statement below. It couldhave been written about any job or any person, so it has little meaning or impact on employers. Don't put general statements like this at thetop of your resume or in summary of qualification statements. Many people put statements like the before statement in their resumes. Yet,they never provide documentation that proves they have such skills. If you state you have a particular skill then provide enough specifics toconvince employers that you do indeed have that skill. For example, which of these statements is more convincing?____________________________________________________________________________________________

Before: Background demonstrates proven organizational and communication skills.

After: Installing and troubleshooting a network system for 10 departments with over 200 users required strong organizational andcommunication skills.

____________________________________________________________________________________________

If you use the statements listed below, beef them up with numbers and specific descriptions so that employers are convinced you have the skillsdescribed.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

1st Functional Heading: ________________________________________________________

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2nd Functional Heading: ________________________________________________________

3rd Functional Heading: ________________________________________________________

Take a look at the after resumes on pages 7, 9 and 11. Notice that these resumes use functional headings to describe each person's work experience andcollege education. Compare the functional headings you listed on the facing page to the after resumes. Are your headings as strong as the after resumes?Do your headings match the ads or job postings you analyzed on the facing page? Strengthen them if they are weak. Transfer your headings from thefacing page and list them below.

Now you're ready to begin describing each of your functional headings. Transfer the skills and sample sentences you checked on pages 19 to 29 to theappropriate functional headings below. Then answer the 12 Questions that start on the next page. Use them to strengthen the sentences you selected frompages 19 to 29. Then read "Strategies That Blow Away Your Competition" on pages 38 to 42 to strengthen your sentences even further.

Your functional headings must grab an employer's attention in seconds. But it's the content, or descriptions of your functional headings, that will determinehow many interviews you receive. If you have strong content you'll generate more interviews. If you have weak content you'll generate fewer interviews.Below, you'll see how answering the 12 Questions helped each job seeker to create a stronger image of his or her skills. In the before examples, I'veincluded each person's job title. In the after examples I've included a functional skill heading that is slanted to match positions within the computer field.

Whom did you work for or with? Will mentioning them expand your image?

Question #1

Read the examples below. As you can see, naming the titles of people you have worked with, or supported may expand your image. Listing names of keyaccounts and organizations you have worked with may also expand your image. In the first example, the title of Secretary doesn't sound like it matchespositions in the computer field but supporting a variety of departments does. Using Departmental Support as a skill heading explains to employers how thesecretarial experience matches skills required for computer system positions. If your job titles don't sound like the skills required in computer positions - askyourself what skill you performed in each job that does match. Then use that skill in headings for your resume.____________________________________________________________________________________________

Before: SecretaryMaintained correspondence, reports and contracts working for this national supplier of electrical equipment.

After: Departmental SupportProvided departmental support to President and Vice President, preparing technical documents and contracts for this national firm.

____________________________________________________________________________________________

Before: Retail Sales ClerkTraveled throughout 12 stores, cashiering, handling money and assuming duties for absent employees.

After: Customer / Regional SupportWorked directly with Regional Manager, supporting 12 locations and assuming duties for absent employees.

Will describing the size of company or departmentyou worked for expand your image?

Question #2

Of the examples below, which sentences are more impressive? Using numbers to describe the size of the company or department you worked for paints abig picture and shows employers the level of your responsibilities. For positions in the computer field, which of the examples work best? The person's jobtitle or skill heading? Notice that we took out references to Warehouse and Nurse because these titles don't sound like they match computer positions(except for computer positions within warehouse or hospital settings - then this experience could be a plus).____________________________________________________________________________________________

Before: Warehouse WorkerOversaw warehouse operations including supervising employees, parts kit prep, shipping/receiving and quality control.

After: Operations ManagementManaged a 50,000 square foot facility, supervising a staff of 10 in all areas including departmental coordination, parts control, inventory and quality control.

Will using numbers to describe your responsibilitiesproject an image that matches your job objective?

Question #3

Of the before and after examples below, who seems to have the most skills? It's easy to see that using numbers and painting a big picture greatly expandseach person's image. Of each example who would you select to interview? In the first example, mentioning the number of accounts maintained and statingthe size of the firm worked for reflects positively on this person's image. This individual wants to use his accounting experience as a plus for a NetworkTechnician position with a corporate accounting firm. In this instance, Corporate Accounting Systems creates a better image than Posting Clerk. In the nextexample, Elementary Teacher does not readily match our image of a computer systems employee but the skill of Training System Development does. Ofthese examples, which works best for computer positions - the job titles or the skill headings?____________________________________________________________________________________________

Before: Posting ClerkPosted accounts receivable and payable accounts, reconciled bank statements, and assisted Regional Accountant.

After: Corporate Accounting SystemsMaintained posting to over 2,000 corporate accounts working directly with Regional Accountant.Reconciled bank statements for this publicly held firm with revenues in excess of $12 million annually.

Before: Elementary TeacherTaught English and grammar to elementary classes. Created training program used throughout district.

After: Training System DevelopmentDeveloped training system and manuals which were implemented district wide in 10 locations.

Did you create, reorganize, conceive or establishany procedures or systems?

Question #4

When answering this question think of what you have created, reorganized or implemented. Then think about who and how many use it, how often theyuse it, where they use it, and the impact it's had on sales, productivity or improved operations - this can apply to all 12 Questions. The two examplesbelow state what was implemented and then show the end results or success of what was implemented. Both sell the skill or job function that best matchesduties required for positions in the computer field.____________________________________________________________________________________________

Before: AssemblerAssembled electronics products, managed and set-up production assembly line which increased number of unitsproduced per day.

After: Production Set-Up and ControlDeveloped, set-up and managed production line which increased output by 15% and shipments by over$250,000 annually.

Have you increased productivity, streamlined paperflow, saved money, or reduced labor?

Question #5

Almost all of us, at one time or another, have improved procedures in our jobs. But, again most of us negate or downplay our achievements. As you cansee from the examples below, many times such achievements far exceed our job title. For example, the receptionist below saved her company over $76,000per year by implementing a computerized template system. Doesn't this present an entirely different picture of her "than just being a Receptionist?" This isthe juicy stuff that employers want to know. This type of information helps them select you as a top candidate for positions in the computer field.____________________________________________________________________________________________

Before: Mail Specialist IIIDeveloped new bulk mail processing forms which reduced total number of forms to be completed by public.

After: Procedures Development / Cost SavingsDeveloped new bulk mail permit forms and applications which reduced number of forms required from 3 to 1.System was implemented in Northwest region and used by 1500 offices with estimated paper and labor savingsof $250,000 annually.

____________________________________________________________________________________________

Before: ReceptionistReorganized engineering file system and created template document files for use by 25 engineers.

After: Creation of Engineering Template Documents / Cost SavingsCreated over 100 template documents utilized by 25 engineers billing work at $35 an hour.Templates cut engineers' average document processing time by 15% and resulted in cost savings of over $76,000 annually.

Did you have responsibility for special projects?Question #6

Over one's career, most people are given responsibility for special projects. However, most of us forget about each individual project. Yet, if we think backand remember projects that relate to and support our job objectives we can greatly expand our resumes. Here are two examples where neither of thesepeople had put special projects in their resumes. As you can see, one even had the title of Special Projects Manager but had only listed Drafter in his title.Which is better the before or after examples? Both of the after examples, will help employers believe each of these employees have the skills to coordinateand communicate with various departments in order to set-up and troubleshoot computer systems and programs. You always want to create an image in theemployer's mind that your computer education combined with your transferable work skills give you a foundation to perform the job. This helps employersbelieve you have the basic skills to step in and do the job and that you only need training to perform specific company-oriented tasks.____________________________________________________________________________________________

Before: DrafterConsiderable experience as a manual drafter with a residential development firm.

After: Special Projects Manager / Technical Branch SupportProvided technical drafting support for 3 branch locations, working directly with 2 architects and up to 20 engineering staff.Managed special projects including special plan notices and plan changes upon approval.

Have you been complimented for special talents?Question #7

Most of us get complimented for those tasks we do well and enjoy. Yet, we never put this information in our resumes. It makes sense that if we getcomplimented it's for the very things that we're best at and enjoy which, of course, can provide a strong foundation for a resume. Many people have toldme that they don't include things they've been complimented for in resumes because it falls outside of their job descriptions. However, if it relates to theirnew job objective it should be included. Notice that the after examples do a better job of labeling each person's talents or achievements to match skillsrequired in computer positions.____________________________________________________________________________________________

Before: CookCommended by restaurant manager for enabling kitchen to serve an additional 50 customers per day.

After: Departmental Coordination / StreamliningCommended by Manager for analyzing and implementing new workflow system for department with 15 employees, which increased number of customers served per day from 200 to over 250.Coordinated staff production requirements with 2 managers and 25 staff in 3 additional departments.

Do you have technical or special skills relevant toyour job objective?

Question #8

Many people have completed training in specialized skill areas but don't know how to market such skills in their resumes. Dan had achieved the highestscore of 200 technicians as an Auto Mechanic. To apply for computer positions, we don't really want to sell his auto mechanic background but we do wantto sell his achievement for achieving such high scores. This ability to excel will carry over into any computer position he accepts. Read the first set ofbefore and after examples. Do you think employers would like to know this about Dan? Which example does a better job of marketing Dan's transferableskills for computer positions - the title of Auto Mechanic or the skill heading of Certified Technician - Nationwide Achievement?____________________________________________________________________________________________

Before: Auto MechanicReceived certificate enabling me to service vehicles manufactured by 5 leading car manufacturers.

After: Certified Technician - Nationwide AchievementAwarded 5 Certificates, achieving highest average score of 200 technicians, being commended as 1 of 2 for nationwide achievement.

Do you have experience hiring, training or supervisingpersonnel?

Question #9

This is a very straight forward question. However, most of us think too narrowly when answering this question. The second example below is a gooddemonstration of this. Originally this person listed that he supervised 2 clerks per shift. However, cumulatively he had trained over 50 staff. Which ismore impressive? When you answer this question, ask yourself how many people you have hired, trained or supervised during the entire time with adepartment, company or over your career. Almost every computer position will require training users and many will require hiring or supervisory skills.Describing the total number of staff you've trained, hired or supervised can really beef up your image.____________________________________________________________________________________________

Before: Sergeant, U.S. ArmySupervised platoon of 45 men, overseeing infantry, equipment servicing and personnel schedules.

After: Staff Supervision / Equipment ServicingSupervised staff of 45, overseeing all equipment servicing, inventory control procedures and personnel schedules.

Have you received promotions that demonstrate achievementwhich supports your career objective?

Question #10

Many people are promoted several times throughout their careers. Yet, their resumes don't include such information. As a result, employers never learnsuch information and aren't able to apply this information in evaluating them. As you can see from the examples below, knowing these individuals werepromoted, why they were promoted, how quickly they were promoted, and the results of their promotions is very powerful. Use these examples to describeyour promotion(s) and slant the information you provide to be supportive of positions within the computer field.____________________________________________________________________________________________

Before: Drycleaner ManagerPromoted from Assistant Manager to Manager by recommending cost effective replacement of obsolete, time consumingequipment.

After: Management / System Cost SavingsPromoted to Manager from Assistant Manager, within 2 weeks of hire, for analyzing and recommending cost effective replacementof obsolete equipment.Implemented new system and trained staff of 10 in system operation which doubled sales and production from 200 itemsto over 400 items processed per day.

Have you received any awards or certificates that relateto and support your job objective?

Question #11

Have you identified the top five skill requirements for theposition you want?

Question #12

Did you identify the top 5 skills required for the last job you applied for? Did you build your resume around those skills? Out of 60 to 70 people, onlyabout 6 to 7 say that hey built their last resume around the top skills required for the job. What does this say about most resumes? They stink. I believethat's why statistics show such prolonged job searches and dismal results from using resumes. Most people never create resumes that match the job they'reapplying for. They merely list job after job, without slanting it to sound like what each industry or employer needs. By identifying the top 5 skills requiredfor the job you want and building a resume around them - you'll put yourself in the top 5% to 10% of people applying for jobs. In the left hand columnyou'll see a list of skills required for a System Administration position. In the right hand column you'll see how skills gained from a Computer ScienceDegree combined with McDonald's cashiering experience can be slanted to match a System Administration position.

Many people receive awards and certificates throughout their careers. Yet, they never put this information in their resumes. Or, if they do they don'tprovide enough information about the award or certificate to show employers how it relates to the job they're applying for. Take a look at the sub-headingsunder Networking / Technical Support in Valerie's resume on page 11. These sub-headings provide enough detail to employers so that they can judge whatValerie had learned as well as the depth of what she's learned while completing her Computer Science Degree. Since most people don't put enough detailedinformation in their resumes - those that do stand out and look the most qualified.____________________________________________________________________________________________

Verbal Description of Tim's "Problem Solving" SkillsDuring my second week at XYZ Furniture we received an order from the Bon Marche for200 boxes to be delivered within 3 days. Production had already started when I wasgiven the project. I quickly estimated how long it would take to finish the order andrealized it would take over 5 days. Then I designed a customized jig to speed theset-up of each box. Using the jig cut our production time from 5 days to 3, andallowed us to meet the Bon's requirements.

How many of these skills do you find inwant ads for computer positions? Youprobably find most or all of them. Therefore, it's important to learn how todescribe these skills in your resumesand during interviews. While the 10Hottest Skills are among the mostfrequently requested by employers -most of them sound soft and don't graban employer's attention when used asheadings in resumes or cover letters.

When describing the 10 Hottest Skillsbe specific and slant them to matchcomputer positions. For example,"Strong Communication Skills" are required inevery job - so this heading is weak. Thecommunication skills employers want incomputer positions are being able toanalyze and report system needs, prepare documentation, train computerusers and solve customer problems.Which headings are best?Strong Communication SkillsorTechnical Documentation,Systems Analysis / Reporting,User Training,Customer Support and Problem Solving?

Describing Tim's 10 Hottest SkillsTim was a furniture designer with problem solving as one of his strongest skills. I askedTim to describe a time that he solved an important problem. He told me the storybelow and described how he had assessed a work situation and re-designed equipmentto meet project deadlines and customer requirements. I then asked if he saw how hecould use these skills in a computer position. He replied, "Yes, I'll need to assesscustomer needs, set up systems and meet deadlines. Now I understand how to describemy furniture design background so that it sounds relevant for computer positions."

Now It's Your TurnSelect one of the 10 Hottest Skills from the list. Then think of an example(s) fromyour background to describe that skill. Selling The BenefitsOf Your SkillsWhen buying a product, a salespersonusually shows us several differentproducts and explains the features andbenefits of each product. Features of ahot air popcorn machine might be alarge basket that keeps cool. Thebenefits of that machine would be nothaving our popcorn spill all over andnot burning our hands.

In a resume, our features are our skills.Just listing our skills won't grabemployers nearly as much as tellingthem how our skills will benefit them. This is just like knowing the popcornmachine won't burn our hands. Thisend-result or benefit motivates us tobuy it instead of other machines.

Employers Compare theBenefits of Hiring ApplicantsEmployers also compare applicants toselect the applicant who will providethe company with the most benefits orend-results such as:

•Being the easiest to train.•Having the most experience and

therefore, being the most productive.•Being a problem solver who cuts

costs and increases profits.•Being able to build morale and

reduce turnover.•Turning negative situations into

positive ones that generate sales.

Most people have a hard timeidentifying their skills let aloneunderstanding how those skills actuallybenefit employers. Your resume, coverletter and thank you letter should allexplain and market the end-result orbenefit of your skills.

Solving Employers'Hidden NeedsMany times we have both "known" and"hidden" needs when buying a product. The salesperson that helps us identifyour hidden needs and helps us fulfillthem gets the sale.

For example, let's look at buying a car.A family with children needs a reliable, roomy car with good gas mileage thatis affordable.

The family knows these needs and goesto the local dealership. A smartsalesperson asks them what theirbiggest concern is in buying a car. Themother replies, "One that is safe andreliable because I use it to drive thekids to and from school. We also needsomething affordable."

The salesman takes the family to oneof the more expensive cars on the lot.He then describes all the safetyfeatures including anti-lock brakes, child safety seats, automatic lockingdoors and steel beams in all sidedoors. He cites safety statistics ratingthe vehicle number one. He then showsthe family less expensive vehicles butpoints out all of the safety featuresthey don't have. The family buys thesafer, more expensive vehicle.

Employer's also have "known" and"hidden" needs when hiring. Employerswill often state their "known" needs inhelp wanted ads. However, manyemployers may have needs that aren'taddressed in ads, but exist. The jobseeker that points out an employer'shidden needs and shows how his skillsand abilities solve them becomes a topcandidate and usually gets hired.

Hidden Needs for NT / Network Software TesterHere are some hidden needs for a Software Tester that you wouldn't normally see in

help wanted ads. Yet, these needs exist and need to be solved by employees.Sandy wants to show how his Restaurant Management experience along with his

computer degree will help him solve this employer's hidden needs.

PowerBase Statements for SQL / Internet Software DevelopmentRay completed his Computer Science Degree and served as an Electronics Tech

in the Navy. These statements establish his qualifications in seconds.1st Skill or Need PowerBase StatementsSQL / Internet Utilized Microsoft NT SQL and Access to write frontSoftware Development end code and SQL server back end code for campus-wide

system with 40 units connected to the internet.

2nd Skill or Need PowerBase StatementsAbility To Lead Trained and supervised a staff of 20 technicians,Technical Staff overseeing all equipment testing, repair and routine maintenance

for computerized electronic systems valued at $1.2 million.

3rd Skill or Need PowerBase StatementsUser Support Analyzed division goals, including equipment performance

requirements to meet user needs for a department with 200staff members.

These statements can be changed slightly and used to by Ray to introduce himself to employerson the phone and during interviews. These three statements would take no longer than 30seconds to say, yet would quickly grab an employer's attention.

Using PowerBaseStatementsTake a look at Jon's resume on page 9.Notice that the first section of Jon'sresume uses PowerBase Statements. How many seconds did it take you toread the 3 statements?

Did they give you a quick, butimpressive overview of Jon's top skills? When writing your resume and coverletter always be sure to sell your topskills with PowerBase Statements.

The first step in creating PowerBaseStatements is to identify the top skillsrequired for the job you want. Thenslant and describe your skills so thatthey sound like what the employerneeds.

Turn back to page 37 and read thesection about Question #12. Mostpeople wouldn't understand how skillsgained as a McDonald's cashier canalso be used in a System Administrationposition. But they do! It's just amatter of labeling the experience tomatch and then explaining how it doesmatch the job being applied for.

Many people don't think they haveskills strong enough to createPowerBase Statements. But everyonedoes. For example, a receptionist mayhave handled 15 lines and 45extensions. If she finds a position for12 lines and 30 extensions, herexperience handling 15 lines can beused to create PowerBase Statements.

Before writing your resume, cover letteror going on interviews identify the topskills required for the job you want. Then create 3 to 4 PowerBaseStatements to market yourself and blowaway your competition!

Now It's Your TurnIn the left hand column below list three of the top skills required for the job you want. In theright hand column write PowerBase statements that describe how your skills can solve anemployer's needs and result in bottom line benefits - such as cutting costs, saving money, etc.PowerBase Statements are great to put in the Objective and Qualifications section at the top ofyour resume. Review the after resumes for more examples.

How To Edit Sentences, Use Action Verbs and QuantifyRead the sentences in the first box below. Then read the sentences in the last box. Now go back and read the sentences in the 2nd, 3rd and4th boxes to see how we edited each sentence. Notice that we've taken out the reference to construction in Step 3. Mentioning constructionmay cause employers to imagine this person as a laborer - an image that doesn't sound like a person working in most computer positions.References to other industries can cause employers to have conflicting impressions of you and your skills. Check what you write and eliminatereferences to other industries that may conflict with the job you want. Most people feel overwhelmed trying to write their resumes. When you begin your resume don't worry about what your sentences sound like.Just get them down on paper. Your first sentences may be like the ones in the first box below. Once you've written as much as you can andfeel you've fully described your work experience, then go back and add past-tense action verbs to your sentences. After you've added actionverbs, go back again, and add numbers just like the examples below. This makes writing your sentences an easy step-by-step process.Begin all your sentences with past-tense action verbs and use numbers. This makes your resume easier and more interesting to read.

Step 6 - Create Your Objective, Education and Employment Sections

Seeking a ______________________________________ position utilizing my __________________________________________,________________________________________________ and __________________________________________ experience.

Seeking a _____________________________________ position utilizing the following experience:•___________________________________________________________________________________________________•___________________________________________________________________________________________________•___________________________________________________________________________________________________•___________________________________________________________________________________________________

Your Objective StatementRemember that employers want to know what you can do for them and if you have the skills they need. A formula that works well is to name the positionyou want and then list 2 to 4 of your strongest skills for the position. Take a look at the Objective Statement in the targeted resume on page 44. It'ssimple but effective. Now take a look at the after resume on page 7. It combines the Objective with several Qualifications Statements. You can createboth types of Objective Statements by completing the worksheet below. Fill out both secti ons then select the strongest one for your resume.

Your Education

The names of many college classes don't necessarily sound like the jobs you'll apply for. In this case, you'll get a better response from employers if theycan easily understand how your classes relate to their needs. For example, many employers won't grasp the relevance of Accounting Coursework forcomputer positions but will grasp the relevance of Accounting for IS Professionals. Review page 18 to complete the section below. Also take another look atthe education sections in the after resumes on pages 7, 9 and 11 to provide more details about your college classes and programs.

Your Condensed EmploymentTake a look at the Work History section in the after resume on page 9. Each company that Jon worked for is described on one line. Each line lists histitle or functional heading, the company he worked for, and his dates of employment. List your work history below:

Why You Need A"Scannable" ResumeMany employers receive hundreds tothousands of resumes. To cut costs inscreening and sorting resumes manyemployers scan them. A scannerlooks like a copy machine and hassoftware that can "read" your resumetext and store it in a databaseprogram. Every resume that isscanned can then be sorted byexperience, skills or education.

Jon's ResumeDidn't Scan Well èCompare this scanned copy of Jon'sresume to his nicely formattedresume on page 9. As you can see, scanning eliminated the formattingcommands such as bolding andunderlining that Jon had used tomake his resume look attractive. When formatting commands aretaken off during scanning, errors anddesign problems usually occur.

Jon's Corrected ResumeTo correct Jon's resume and createthe resume on the facing page, forscanning, we followed the guidelineslisted on page 54.

Scannable Resumes CanGrab AttentionEven though Jon's new resume on thefacing page, is very plain it still usesstrong content and design elementsto grab attention. When an employerviews this resume on paper it is mucheasier to look at than Jon's beforeresume. If viewed on a computerscreen Jon's new resume, on thefacing page, will also be much easierfor employers to look at and see keyareas of experience at a glance.

Two Resume VersionsIn today's job market you need oneresume that is employer friendly andlooks nice that you can mail or taketo interviews. And, a second versionthat is computer friendly, looks plainand has been stripped of formattingfor scanning, posting to resumebanks or e-mail.Employers Use Key WordsTo Sort Scanned ResumesThe first section of this resumeincludes a block of key words, orareas of experience, an employermight sort scanned resumes by.Some scanning programs can onlyretain 25 to 35 key words. Therefore,it's important to list 25 to 35 keywords at the top of your resume toensure they are picked up instead ofless important words. Notice that thekey words are nouns not verbs.Analyze ads and job postings toidentify key words, hot industry skillsand areas of experience that are inhigh demand for computer positions(refer to page 14). Pages 18 to 29,also provide many key words.Scanned Resumes areViewed by Human EyesImagine being an HR person andreceiving 30 scanned resumes likethe one on page 52 and only 1 likethe resume on this page. Which onewould grab your attention? Theresume on this page provides thebest of both worlds. It contains akey word section for scanning butalso uses good visual design.

ASCII orPlain Text ConversionOnce you've created your nicelyformatted resume with a wordprocessing program you're ready toclean it for scanning, the internet ore-mail. Make a copy of your resumefile. Then refer to your wordprocessing manual to save the newfile as ASCII or plain text (you may needto use a .txt extension). This processmakes your resume look like theresume on page 52. Then follow theguidelines on the next page.

Clean-Up Your ASCII ResumeFollow the guidelines below to "clean-up"your ASCII resume. Use only originalsprinted from this file for employers toscan. Photocopies do not scan well.

Formatting Guidelines1) Format all text flush-left.2) Use caps for headings and job titles.3) Don't use bold, italics, underlining, lines,

boxes, tabs, bullets, columns or centering.4) Use Courier 12 point (non-proportional).5) Set margins to 1" all around to allow 70

characters or letters per line (see Step 6 below).6) Create block paragraphs that word wrap like the

resume on page 53 (insert a hard return only atthe end of the paragraph)... or ...Make bulleted statements like those in theresume on the facing page. Because you can'tdetermine what margins each employer will useto print your resume, a safe guideline to preventyour bulleted statements from word wrapping isto edit your statements so that they are no morethan 60 characters or letters per line.

7) Don't compress line or letter spacing.8) Use hyphens (-) or asterisks (*) under

headings or next to words you want to drawattention to (*** John Doe ***).

9) Print original resumes for scanning and faxingon white paper. Gray, dark toned or speckledpaper can cause errors when scanned or faxed.

10)Scanned and internet resumes can be 2 pages.

Test These GuidelinesNo one "set" of guidelines will enableyou to create one resume that worksperfectly for scanning, e-mail andon-line resume posting because eachprocess utilizes different softwareand printing systems. Test your resumeby having it scanned, then printed andby printing it from e-mail programsand resume banks. Notice how thisresume has several lines that ran offthe right margin. It's obvious that Eddidn't test his resume before posting iton the internet. When submitting yourresume to internet or employer resumebanks follow instructions but applystrategies you've learned to create aresume with good content and design.

If You Are Not AnInternet ProMany people get excited when they'veposted their resume on the internet. Then they get a poor response and thinkit's because the internet doesn't work. Most likely it's because they created andposted a weak resume like the one onthe facing page. Ed had used HTMLprogramming to create his beforeresume so that it looked typeset. As theafter resume shows, even an uglyresume with content targeted to sellyour computer and related skills willgenerate a better response than anHTML resume with weak content. First, spend time creating a resume withstrong content, then learn how to createan HTML resume that looks typeset withprograms like MS FrontPage.

Ways WeImproved Ed's Resume1) Compare the first 4 sections of Ed'sbefore resume to the 1st section of thisresume. Which is stronger? Whichexample uses the greatest amount ofspace to market Ed's most importantcomputer and related skills?2) Ed's after resume is only one page, yet says more by using numbers andskill headings targeted for computernetwork positions.3) By adding a key word section at thetop of this resume and editing it slightlyEd can easily create a great resume tobe used for scanning.
