• Protects the body from harmful environmental influences such as – mechanical damage, pathogenic organisms, etc.
• Sensation through:– Touch– Pressure– Pain & Temperature
• 2 layers– Dermis & Epidermis
• Dermis- sensitive connective tissue layer of skin below the epidermis, and contains nerve endings, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, blood vessels, and lymph vessels.
• Epidermis- the outer, protective, nonvascular layer of skin that vertebrates while covering the dermis.
• Sweat glands- tubular glands that are found everywhere in the skin of humans.
• Sebaceous glands- any various glands that are located in the dermis that open into a hair follicle.– Hair follicle- a tubular enfolding of the
epidermis containing the root of a hair.
• People are born with different types of skin colors.– Some people have the
ability to tan from sunlight– People with the albinism
disease (albinos) can’t get dark.
• Two irritations:– Acne & Warts
• Caused by a viral infection
• Can be removed by surgery, freezing, or application of caustics
• Can be prevented by washing skin while bathing
• Don’t touch someone else’s wart !!!
• Mostly found in the face, back, neck, and shoulders
• You can treat your acne with Acne wash from any local drug store
• Symptoms of acne are forming bumps or heat rashes
• You can prevent acne by removing your makeup before sleeping, and most likely washing yourself by showering.
• The cause of acne is unknown.• Occurs mainly between the ages of 14 –
20
• Example: Sunburn
• This affects the epidermis causing major pain, redness, and swelling.
• Affects both the dermis and epidermis causing redness, pain, swelling, and blisters.
• If this burn isn’t properly treated, it then gets worse, which becomes a third degree burn.
• Affects the dermis, epidermis, and hypodermis causing vessels to become visible, and charring of skin or a translucent white color.
• After healing this burn, they most likely turn into scars.
• Keratin- a tough protein substance that is a chief ingredient of hair, nails, horns, and hooves.
• Epithelial cells- closely packed cells forming the epithelium.
• Adipose tissue- a type of connective tissue that contains stored cellular fat.
