Young Leaders Day Our students were fortunate enough to attend the Young Leaders Day in Brisbane on Monday, this included our SRC Executive, Year 5 SRC representatives, Captains and Vice Captains, who were accompanied by Ms Lennon and Miss Stanton-Gillan. We are proud of the students not only for their exemplary behaviour but also for the positive attitude and ability to listen closely and come away with some important messages from very inspiring speakers. All of these students were excellent ambassadors for our school. On Monday, Stage 3 SRC members went to the National Young Leaders Day in Brisbane. There were 4 different speakers who told us how they became leaders, in their different fields. First was John Coutis. He had his legs amputated and now he moves around on a skateboard. John struggled to get through school because he was bullied. Second was Jackie French. She has written over 200 books including, Diary of a Wombat’. She is also a very keen reader, but amazingly has dyslexia and has had to overcome many obstacles to get to where she is now. Third was Erin Molan. She is the first female to report for sport. Erin Molan received 88 rejection letters before she got a job as a sports reporter. She taught us about determination and resilience. Finally Bianca Chatfield, she was captain of the Australian Diamonds (Netball). We enjoyed buying the famous halogen pins. Overall, it was a really great day and I would definitely recommend it. Work, Health and Safety and Communication This is a timely reminder that in the event of an emergency where parents need to be contacted, our first point of communication is via the School Stream app which is a highly effective and very time efficient means of communication. There are a few parents that still do not have the school stream app on their phone. I urge all parents to download this FREE APP if you haven't already done so. We are happy to be of assistance if you're not sure how to do this. This is particularly important in the event of adverse weather conditions and the need to communicate quickly to all families. If your child is sick at school and we need to contact you, this will still be done by phone.

Pets at School A BIG thank you to the large majority of families who are no longer bringing their dogs on site, your ongoing cooperation is very much appreciated. Please do not bring your dogs to school. This is a Department of Education Work, Health & Safety requirement that needs to be adhered to at all times.

Stranger Danger It is important that children are informed about ‘stranger danger’. If children are walking to and from school or the bus stop, they should walk in a group and not respond to any strangers who approach them. If they feel unsafe they should walk quickly or run to their destination. It would be appreciated if all parents could discuss ‘stranger danger’ with your children, including strategies that they can use that may be specific to your neighbourhood.

Communication If you would like to talk to your child’s class teacher about an issue or concern, please do not do so whilst they are lining up for class ready to go into the room as their supervision of the class has commenced. Staff are happy to talk to parents when they are not responsible for the direct supervision of their class.

New Families A BIG thank you to all of our new families who came in for our Meet & Greet Session last week. It was great to catch up with you all, to make connections with other families and to meet staff. Thank you to Mrs Perusco for organising the afternoon and to staff for staying back.

Thank You to Our P&C Thank you to the P&C for agreeing to fund our Harmony Day activities during the week commencing 23 March. It looks as if it will be a wonderful experience for all of our students. More information will be provided in the coming weeks. The P&C also provided funds to purchase a new outdoor PA system which has arrived and the quality is excellent. It was great to see some new faces at our last P&C Meeting. We are fortunate to have such a productive, supportive P&C who do much to enhance teaching and learning throughout the school. Until next time, Mrs Linda Trigg Principal

Good things happening! 1A enjoyed a fun lesson in the STEM room with Mrs Whitney and the Beebots. The students worked in pairs to program a short series of steps to make their Beebots travel along a path, making some turns along the way. Students were then asked to build a garage to park their Beebots in. The students demonstrated great problem solving and excellent collaboration skills. We can’t wait to go back and visit the STEM room.

Instrumental Program I enjoyed being present when the Senior Band had their first run through for the year last Thursday. Whilst they may have been a bit rusty, they were eager and keen to be part of this wonderful program. The Wilderband had their first rehearsal last Wednesday morning, they were a small and enthusiastic group making some good sounds. Saxophone and clarinet students need to have reeds. Please ensure your child is able to participate fully in rehearsals by having a working instrument and their music.

Wilderband - Wednesday @ 8.00am in the Band Room (this is for students who were in Bunyip Band in 2019)

Senior Band - Thursday @ 8.00am in the Band Room (for students who were in Wilderband and Senior Band in 2019)

New students to the program will begin in Bunyip Band in Term 2. Some dates for your diary:

• Instrumental Program first meeting for 2020 - Thursday 12 March @ 3.30pm in the Band Room.

• End of Term Mini Concert - Thursday 2 April @ 3.30pm in the Band Room.

Have an enjoyable week. Cheryl Booker

Growth Mindset Over the past few years, the Byron Bay Public School Community have implemented the idea of a GROWTH MINDSET. This year we will continue to work with the students and parents in understanding why having a positive mindset and believing that we can achieve is important. Our focus in class for the last 5 weeks has been the ‘LEARNING PIT’.

The Learning Pit is a place that we all go when we are learning a new concept. It is the strategies that we use to ‘get out of the pit’ that allows us to achieve new learning. The lifelong skills of determination and persistence will be a focus. Strategies that the students will be taught include self-talk, helping us to work out what to do when we are faced with a challenge and why going into the pit is essential. It would be great if you could have a discussion with your child/ren about the ‘Learning Pit’. * What is the Learning Pit? * How do you get in? * What sort of things can you do to get out? For more information about the ‘Learning Pit’ watch this clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwsmicqjyFg Growth Mindset Committee Michelle Spry Assistant Principal Stage 2
