Dear BYSO Friend,

At BYSO, we are proud that excellence in music making is, uniquely, both a goal and a means. Every year, hundreds of young musicians participate in ensemble and training programs coached by Boston’s finest musicians and educators. They perform repertoire that is above the level of any other youth orchestra in our country, in difficulty, maturity and scope. Simultaneously, something even more remarkable is happening. Through BYSO, classical music ignites a passionate pursuit of excellence, perseverance, self-confidence and pride within our young musicians. They are transformed by a unique experience during their time at BYSO, and it is clear that they take this transformation into all areas of their life. Last season, BYSO was comprised of nearly 500 young musicians from greater Boston and throughout New England. More than 18,000 people attended BYSO concerts and 6,000 of them were children under the age of 18. This is something we are extraordinarily proud of. This would not be possible without the priceless support of our communities. Thank you for empowering the future of our children through classical music. We look forward to our bright future ahead, and invite you to join us. Sincerely,

George Keches President, Board of Directors

OuR MISSION The mission of the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras (BYSO) is to encourage artistic excellence in a nurturing environment by providing the highest quality orchestral training and performance opportunities to qualified musicians, grades K–12, while making its programs accessible through financial aid and to underrepresented youth through outreach.

Programs and opportunities like our opera program exemplify the rare opportunity for a young musician to truly understand an area of repertoire that will enhance their artistic understanding on a larger scale.

In our Intensive Community Program, which brings classical music to underrepresented communities that may not otherwise have access to it, a kindergartner achieves artistic and personal success while progressively mastering a string instrument as part of a community based peer learning model.

Through our family concerts in partnership with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, a shared understanding is achieved when our children perform classical music for other children.

Nowhere else in the world can children experience classical music in the way they do at BYSO!

SARINA, BYS, BASSOON, AGE 17“For the past five years, Sundays have been the highlight of my week. The space is always bursting with contagious energies of passion, dedication, camaraderie, and a desire to communicate all of it through the performance of classical music. Having the opportunity to spend six hours a week in this climate has, without a doubt, greatly impacted my life. Obviously working on numerous challenging pieces of music with talented peers and esteemed and insightful conductors and coaches has made me a better bassoonist and better musician. But being in BYSO has also allowed me to find my place within a community. When I started PW (Preparatory Winds) in the eighth grade, I rarely ever raised my hand in class, asked for help, or led even a small group of classmates. When I was told to play louder as one of the few instruments playing the roots of chords in Tosca, I realized that I couldn’t just always hide in the background, whether it was during an orchestra rehearsal or in a classroom.

When I graduate from high school and BYSO in a few months, I know that my Sundays will be quite different. I might not be able to spend hours with talented and caring people in such a uniquely energetic and passionate setting. But I know that I will take every single lesson that I have learned over the past five years – whether about music or life – with me.”

BENjAMIN, VIOLIN, REP/ICP, AGE 14“BYSO has made a huge impact in my life. It has helped me accomplish many things that I wouldn’t have done if it weren’t for the intensive music training I received by being part of BYSO and ICP (Intensive Community Program). Being part of the BYSO has improved my confidence and has led me to try other interests like taking part in my school play and not being overly nervous when I have to do public speaking.

Involvement with the BYSO has helped me to overcome my shy-ness and has helped me to be more organized and disciplined with my school work. I have learned to juggle many interests like sports and drama in order to make sure I get my practice time in. I have learned how to manage my time better and not to procrastinate and waste time.

Playing in the BYSO orchestra has given me a greater appreci-ation for music and the discipline required to excel, not just in music but in many aspects of my life, like academics, sports and theater. I have learned that in order to succeed in anything I need commitment and hard work.”

FAMILY CONCERT AudIENCE MEMBERS

“ My children were completely captivated and it was great to be able to talk with them about how this performance was by children. Thank you for providing such an amazing experience for young people.”

“ We left the concert with so much to talk about! My son can’t wait to get his hands on an instrument!”

“ I honestly hadn’t expected my daughter to be so mesmerized. And she hasn’t stopped talking about it…”
