11.. BBAACCKKGGRROOUUNNDD::

The Karnataka Bio-diversity Board has entrusted the work of conducting training

program on the preparation of People’s Bio-diversity Register in the coastal districts of

Karnataka viz., Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada & Udupi.

The training program on the “Preparation of People’s Bio-diversity Register” was

conducted by EMPRI, Bangalore, under the Karnataka Coastal Bio-diversity Information

System project (KCBIS), funded by Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development &

Finance Corporation (KUIDFC).

22.. TTRRAAIINNIINNGG OOBBJJEECCTTIIVVEESS::

The objectives of the training program were as detailed below.

To develop the skills of Bio-diversity Management Committee (BMC) members to

prepare the PBRs.

To impart training to the BMC members & members of the study team to take-up

survey & identification of Bio-diversity elements and landscape elements.

Documentation of Bio-diversity by using appropriate formats.

Exposure of trainees to the models of PBR prepared by knowledgeable persons.

Understanding the benefits of Bio-diversity.

Understanding the threats faced by Bio-diversity.

Identification of stakeholders in the locality.

Understanding the indicators of change in Bio-diversity.

33.. TTAARRGGEETT AAUUDDIIEENNCCEE::

EMPRI has successfully conducted about eighteen training programs on the

“Preparation of People’s Bio-diversity Register” in the coastal districts of Karnataka.

The target group included the Bio-diversity Management Committee members, Grama

Panchayat members, Secretaries of GPs, Elected members of local bodies, NGOs, Students,

Teachers & Public. A total of 910 participants were trained in the program.

44.. TTRRAAIINNIINNGG MMOODDUULLEE::

A model booklet on the steps and methods involved in the preparation of People’s

Bio-diversity Register prepared in kannada by the Karnataka Bio-diversity Board was used

for training purpose.

55.. SSUUPPPPLLYY OOFF TTRRAAIINNIINNGG CCOOUURRSSEE KKIITT::

The course kit containing a notepad, pen, training booklet on Bio-diversity

Conservation & Management System and a cotton bag was provided to each trainee.

66.. TTRRAAIINNIINNGG SSTTAAFFFF::

The following resource persons of Environmental Management & Policy Research

Institute (EMPRI) were involved as trainers in concocting the training program.

77.. DDEETTAAIILLSS OOFF TTRRAAIINNIINNGG PPRROOGGRRAAMM::

Eleven training program of two days each and seven training programs of one-day

each were conducted at Grama Panchayat level. On the whole 18 Training Programs on the

preparation of People’s Bio-diversity Register were conducted in different Grama

Panchayats of coastal Districts of Karnataka viz. Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada and

Udupi between 14.05.06 and 17.12.06. A total of 910 participants were trained on the

method of using the formats for preparation of People’s Bio-diversity Register.

Method of documentation of flora, fauna, mangroves, wetlands and agro bio-

diversity was also explained. The training included field demonstration by the resource

persons. Details of training programme, date, venue and target groups are furnished in

Table-1.

99.. FFEEEEDDBBAACCKK BBYY TTRRAAIINNEEEESS::

The quality, purpose & effectiveness of training programs were evaluated on the basis

feedback information given by the participants. Results of evaluation are as indicated

below.

a. The common opinion expressed by the participants was preparation of People’s Bio-

diversity is the need of a day. It should be made mandatory to each & every village.

While appreciating the program the participants have expressed that this type of

program should be conducted at Grama Panchayat level to general public to create

awareness about the documentation of Biological resources.

b. This kind of program should involve each & every citizen.

c. Display through mass media like press, TV and Radio helps in conveying message

to the layman also.

d. Communicate in local languages i e Tulu & Konkani in coastal Districts

e. This is an excellent course, and it is suggested to involve the policy makers for these

kinds of programs.

f. Number of days can be increased to three or four days.

g. Demo, incase of availability of software.

h. Presentation by various guest speakers supported by case studies was highly useful.

i. Thanks, we got so much information regarding the documentation of Biological

resources and they extended hearty thanks to all the resource persons giving

plentiful information and EMPRI for conducting this program

j. It was an excellent course.

k. Study material should be provided to participants for reference.

l. This awareness program was really beneficial & also good.

m. This type of program should be made mandatory to the people who are working in

Forest, Agriculture, Horticulture, Fisheries & Health Departments

n. This type of awareness program should be conducted frequently i.e, once in three

months in rural areas.

The Feedback format is enclosed as Annexure – 1 and the details of feedback evaluation is

appended in Table-4
