The previous issue of this newsletter went (initially) to about 45 people, with a request for addresses of others. The mailing list is now close to 150, and growing weekly. Welcome to Issue Number minus one of the C. E. C. G. Newsletter.

The previous issue of this newsletter went (initially) to about 45

people, with a request for addresses of others. The mailing list

is now close to 150, and growing weekly. Over 95% of ~his list are

composers / composer~organizers. There are still some glaring holes

in the list, particularly the Maritimes and the Prairies,

~ people sent addresses, and I would particularly like to thank

John Winiarz, John Celona, Micheline Coulombe Saint-Marcoux, Wendy

Bartley and Jim Montgomery for their special efforts.

Submissions to the Newsletter are encouraged. Materialsshould be 'photo - ready', and (usually) be able to be reduced to

Brock University Music Division announces a competition for electro-acoustic tape music. First prize is a Soundchaser Computer Music System(with Turbo Traks) and a 48k Apple] [+ computer with monitor and drive.Deadline for submissions is February 15, 1985. The ,·;inner and runners-upwill be announced and broadcast on March 31, 1985, on CBC-HI's Two New Hours,and will be performed on St. Catharines' Elektra music series.

The competition is open to all composers. Works submitted must be atleast five minutes in length and must be clearly labelled showing title,composer, format, speed, duraticn and noise reduction (if required).Entries may be stereo or quadraphonic reel recordings or stereo cassette~

and con:posers are asked to include a brief biography with their submissions.There is a $10.00 (CND) entry fee for each submission; certified chequesor money orders may be made payable to H.e Brock Uni versi ty Departmentof Fine Arts. Tapes subIJitted will be returned only if accompanied by aself-addressed envelope. An entry form is reqUired for each submission.

Registration

Proposed conference registration fees(Cdn.) are $90.00 for CMA members, $105.00for non-members, and $75.00 for students.Registrations received after July 1, 1985 or atthe conference site will be subject to a latefee. The registration fee will include allconcert tickets, bus transportation toconcert sites, and access to all conferenceevents. Further registration details will beavailable in early 1985.

Hotel Accommodation

A block of rooms will be reserved at adowntown Vancouver hotel and registrantswill be responsible for booking their ownaccommodation. Further accommodationdetails will be available in early 19B5.

The 11th International Computer MusicConference will be held in Vancouver,August 19-22, 1985 under the sponsorship ofthe Centre for the Arts, Simon FraserUniversity. This conference, which is beingheld for the first time in Canada, is aninternational forum for scientific, technical,and artistic exchange concerning computerapplications to music. Paper sessions, guestspeakers, demonstrations, and concerts willtake place at Robson Square Media Centre(August 19-21) and Simon Fraser University(August 22).

Session topics will include:

• computer assisted composition andperformance

The organizer of this event lacks any respect or taste, and sois organizing a most tasteless performance where mere ordinarypeople are invited to come and play these master-pieces, whilethe renowned WF turns in his grave.

At 7:00 a small informal supper is planned, so that participantscan prepare themselves properly. Bring enough food for l! peopleas this is a pot-luck supper. Appropriate liquid refreshmentwill be supplied.

The Music Department of Concordia University, and the ConcordiaElectro-acoustic Composers' Group presents a four day series ofelectro-acoustic concerts downtown in the Visual Arts Gallery ofthe Visual Arts Building.

Works for tape with performers and slides by Otto Joachim, DavidKeane, Paul Pedersen, Yves Daoust, Alain Thibault, John Celonaetc. will be presented in three different programmes of MUSICon Thursday the 15th, Friday the 16th and Saturday the 17th ofNovember.

On Sunday the 18th, there will be a special audience participationconcert where people are asked to bring ins~truments, and to joinWilhelm Furtwangler and the Berlin Philharmonic in the performanceof two Beethoven symphonies, #2 and #4.

The concerts begin informally at 7 P.M., with tape pieces onThursday, Friday and Saturday, and on Sunday with a bring yourown buffet supper (to be shared by all).

The concert portion begins at 8:15 on all four evenings.

WHAT IS LIVEELECTRONIC MUSIC

.... terms, music that forecasts andoccasionally determines the direction of thedevelopment of these technologies. IT IS ANART FORM in which technologies are thetools used to open a realm of humandevelopment and expression not previouslyapproachable. IT IS AN AESTHETIC whichboth challenges and incorporates allprevious aesthetics. IT IS A PERFORMANCEMODE in which words like' 'cybernetic"and "interactive" come out of the lab andstrut their stuff upon the stage. Ultimately,it is sound - sound as it has not beenpreviously experienced, sound surroundingand blending with image and humanity toherald a new world.

WHAT IS THECANADIAN CONTRIBUTION

'I t can reasonably be argued that LiveElectronic Music is a Canadianinvention. In the late '40's, there

were three places in the world in which newwork was being done which woulddetermine the course of the brand-new fieldof electronic music. They were Koln, Paris,and Ottawa. FJom the beginning, the centrewhich stressed real-time musical control ofthe parameters of this fledgling art form,that insisted that its rightful place was onthe concert stage and not in the laboratory,was the ELMUS Project of the NationalResearch Council. Under the direction ofHugh LeCaine, the inventor of the voltage­controlled synthesizer, ELMUS developed anumber of live performance instruments tenyears before the first Moog synthesizer.ELM US also pioneered digital control ofanalog synthesis, multi-level real-timesignal processing, and interactivecomputer-driven synthesis. Building on thisfoundation, Canadians in both academic andindependent situations continue to doinnovative and pioneering work on a worldclass scale.

WHAT IS THEMUSIC GALLERY

he Electronic Music Festival is beingpresented by the Music Gallery atthe Ontario Science Centre. The

Music Gallery is a centre for contemporarymusic offering musicians, composers andaudience a broad range of services andprograms designed to foster interest in andpromotion/presentation of all aspects ofcontemporary musical activity. To themusician/composer we offer a complete8-track recording facility and asophisticated electronic music studio thatincludes one of the newest digitalsynthesizers available. Our recordcompany, Music Gallery Editions, has acatalogue of 25 records representing a widerange of Canadian musics including a newseries of indigenous music. A quarterlypUblication, Musicworks, offers a forum fordiscussion and presentation ofcontemporary music from a Canadianperspective. For musician and audience weoffer both a regular concert series of 150concerts a year and a special series ofcommissioned works featuring multi­disciplinary performances and soundinstallations. Access to the studio isavailable.to members, and the concertseries (including the Composers Series,Muse-ic, and the Festival of Live ElectronicMusic) are open to musicians performinginnovative music in the contemporary field.
