FATHER

Used to wonder just why fatherNever had much time for play,

Used to wonder why he’d ratherWork each minute of the day.

Used to wonder why he neverLoafed along the road an’ shirked

Can’t recall a time wheneverFather played while others worked.

Father didn’t dress in fashion,Sort of hated clothing new;

Style with him was not a passion;He had other things in view.

Boys are blind to much that’s goingOn about ‘em day by day,

And I had no way of knowingWhat became of father’s play.

All I knew was when I neededShoes I got ‘em on the spot;

Everything for which I pleaded,Somehow, father always got.

Wondered, season after season,Why he never took a rest,

And that I might be the reasonThen I never even guessed.

Father set a store on knowledge;If he’d lived to have his way

He’d have sent me off to collegeAnd the bills been glad to pay.

That, I know, was his ambition:Now and then he used to say

He’d have done his earthly missionOn my graduation day.

Saw his cheeks were getting paler,Didn’t understand just why;

Saw his body growing frailer,Then at last I saw him die.

Rest had come! His tasks were ended,Calm was written on his brow;

Father’s life was big and splendid,And I understand it now.

–Edgar A. Guest

You can always count on a fine American poet, Edgar A. Guest,who hails from Michigan, for a fitting sentiment for our holidays.

Glory be to You, O Trinity in Unity, one God,before all ages, now and forever!

✠ SPECIAL FEAST DAYS

TRINITY SUNDAY

The New Testament teaches usthat “God is Love” and today wecelebrate the glories of divine charity(or love). The Father, contemplatingHimself begets the Son; the HolyGhost proceeds from the eternalmutual love of the Father and the Son;the loving, all-powerful activity of theHoly Spirit is the enduring bonduniting man with God. Today’s feastof the Holy Trinity sums up themysteries of Christmas, Easter andPentecost. Love became incarnate inour Lord’s Nativity, triumphed overhate in His Resurrection andpossessed the souls of the faithful atthe Descent of the Holy Ghost.

The charity of the Father wasdemonstrated at Christmas, when“God so loved the world”; Eastermanifested the charity of Christ, Who“laid down His life for us”; Pentecostis the love-feast of the Holy Ghost;Trinity Sunday glorifies Triune Love,as Holy Church sings: “Blessed be theHoly and Undivided Trinity”.

Our Lord devoted thirty-threeearthly years to outpourings of divinecharity; His Mystical Body lives by theexercise of charity, that we may benurtured in the paths of love. Themystery of the Blessed Trinity inspiresus constantly to cry: “Glory be to theFather, and to the Son, and to theHoly Ghost.”

Mary Jean(On Her First Communion Day)

The angels envy you today,Mary Jean.

And certainly the angels may,Mary Jean.

For in your white Communion dressYou seem far lovelier than they,

More fortunate than they.How fervently your fingers press

Your God, Whom all the angels bless,To your young happy heart

today,Mary Jean!

Oh, may your heart remain as gayAnd sweet and clean

As your white shining dress today,Mary Jean!

I do not know what you may be,What fate or fortune shall convey–A nun? A nurse? Or wife or queen?I do not know what you shall be.

I only know I’d like to seeYou stay forever as today,

Mary Jean!

–Hyacinth Blocker, O.F.M.

Dedicated to Pentecost’s “Sweet Seven” ourFirst Communicants: “I’d like to see you stayforever as today!”

CORPUS CHRISTI

This feast of the Sacramental Bodyof Christ was instituted in the thirteenthcentury to emphasize Eucharistic truthagainst false and heretical teaching. TheHoly Eucharist is the heart and center ofCatholic worship and life. In theEucharistic sacrifice, we, who were mademembers of Christ’s Mystical Body inBaptism, offer and plead before theFather the eternal and all sufficientSacrifice of Christ. And in union withthat adorable Sacrifice, we offer to Godthe oblation of ourselves, our souls andminds and bodies, our prayers, works,joys and sufferings, imploring Him tosee us only as mirroring Jesus Christ.

In the Eucharistic feast, we then willbe so permeated by the SacramentalChrist that “ we become partakers of thedivinity of Him Who deigned to becomepartaker of our humanity.” The BlessedSacrament is the supreme proof of God’slove for us. In Holy Communion Jesusgives us a pledge of eternal life and aforetaste of the Beatific Vision.

The prayer that is faithful, andhumble, and devout shall certainlypierce the clouds and enter Heaven,whence, with equal certainty, it shallnot return empty-handed.

- Saint Bernard

My Jesus, I do not know how muchmore of life remains to me, but suchyears as are to come to me, whetherfew or many, I consecrate them to You.

A Father’s Prayer to God the Father

O God, our Father in Heaven, Imarvel to think that You have called meto be a father, too.

For in Your presence I am but achild. You are strong, I am weak, You areholy, I am a sinner, You are perfect inwisdom and love, I am often blind andprone to selfishness.

In spite of all this, You have calledme to be a father here on earth. I askfrom You the grace to lead my familyalong Your paths, by my words, butespecially by my example and my prayer.Help me to put my wife and childrenahead of my own ambitions andrecreations, to be attentive to theirneeds, just as You show Your providentcare to all of us.

And when firmness or discipline arerequired, help me to be motivated not byfrustration or impatience, but - like You- by a heart of love. Amen.

✠ BISHOP’S CORNER

Wonderful weather greeted the great days of Pentecost this year. The Vigil dawned dark and cool, as we resumedsome of the spirit and text of Holy Saturday, awaiting now the light and warmth of the Holy Ghost. But the sunshone out as the altar was finally flooded with light and sound, the melody of many chimes and bells, to mark theGloria, which anticipates the Holy Ghost’s descent at nine o’clock Pentecost morning. Eight new Soldiers of Christwere confirmed after the Pontifical Mass, and enrolled in the Scapular. Finally, they were feted at the head table inHelfta Hall at a charming reception, which refreshed all of us after so long a vigil.

Pentecost morning started overcast and humid, but blue skies and cool dry air soon arrived to save the day, making our joycomplete. At nine o’clock, our newly confirmed little Soldiers of Christ marched into church with their symbolic Baptismal candlesfor the High Mass and First Holy Communion. The sweetly moving music of the choir and organ, spiritual and joyful, helped usto lift our hearts to God as we brought our children to be fed with the Bread of Life. Pentecost Vespers closed this splendid day ofGod’s own Holy Spirit.

Pentecost Monday’s afternoon High Mass marked St. Anthony as well and led to our Fatima Rosary Procession. The goodweather continued, making the nicely attended procession a delight. We could hardly believe it when Tuesday was yet another perfectday, as we met to sing the final (alas!) of our High Mass of the Octave, and open the Summer Novena to Our Mother of PerpetualHelp and St. Anthony. By now we were all showing a little wear and tear, but it was worth it. Fr. McGuire and I had some sinus orsomething, and all of our devoted regulars (how good God is!) needed a little rest, that “dulce refrigerium” the Sequence promises.

Still, our daily Masses continued, and young chaplain Thomas Simpson managed an altar practice for Paddy Omlor, who’ssteadily working on his Low Mass. Do your boys need training? Every boy should be an altar boy. Let us know, and we’ll worksomething out.

Ember Wednesday saw the cool dark return, but we didn’t mind since the thunder made us think of Sinai, and it was a day ofpenance and prayer, especially for candidates for Holy Orders. Please pray for our Reverend Mr. Vili Lehtoranta, to be ordained adeacon in Florida on SS Peter and Paul. One day he hopes to bring Christ’s light back to his native Finland.

The cats kept Pentecost in fine feline fashion. When they sit sphinx-like and silent in the high grass I know they’re up tosomething. Sure enough, Puccini bagged a baby bunny, and couldn’t resist conducting his own victorious procession Sundaymorning. I watched with wonder. I hope, however, Ohio has a one bunny limit for the season. Now, if only the cats wouldconcentrate on mice.

Fr. Larrabee was to Milwaukee for Pentecost, and I am happy to visit St. Hugh today. Fr. McGuire is up at Chillicothe,working on the new St. Clare chapel. Fr. Cekada has been continuing his internet apostolate with a series of postings on Fisheaters’Forum as well as the National Catholic Register site, always seeking to explain sedevacantism, the only answer to the mysteriouseclipse of the Church in our day.

We’re all preparing a wonderful Corpus Christi/St. John’s Eve for Thursday evening. Come, keep the feast with us! Mark theSacrament of Sacraments by hearing Mass and receiving Holy Communion on the very day Our Lord requested. Afterwards, bringa dish to share for our potluck picnic as we await summer’s shortest night with a barbeque and blessed bonfire, St. John’s Fire. Therewill be a bit of singing and entertainment to round out the evening.

Be sure to visit our website sgg.org for the most delightful slideshow of this year’s Holy Week. You will be amazed at the colorand the composition of the fine fotos, and so proud and grateful for St. Gertrude the Great, which still gets God such glory in themidst of the eclipse.

God bless our fathers! Silent, strong leaders in our homes, we thank you for all of your sacrifices, and pray for you especiallytoday. We really need you and do appreciate you. May St. Joseph walk and work with you, and the Sacred Heart sustain you.

–Bishop Dolan

Although we put words around the inexpressible mystery of the Trinity, the reality lies forever hiddenfrom our understanding and glimpsed most profoundly in our prayers.
