2/BREEZE JANUARY 2019

The sun is shining, it’s abeautiful day in SouthernCalifornia, and let me start by

wishing each of you a happy andhealthy new year. I’m excited to sharewith you some of our plans for 2019,California Yacht Club’s 97th year, and to introduce my theme: Reach forthe Stars.

What is Reach for the Stars? It is many things.First and foremost, it is striving for excellence --going beyond what is expected or ordinary, every dayand in every way. It is also journeying to distantplaces (in a boat, of course), gazing at constellationsin the night sky, seeking out the everyday stars allaround us, recognizing the deep connection of ourClub to Star boats and Star sailors, andacknowledging the impact of Hollywood on SouthernCalifornia. You may think of other meanings, which isgreat, for it is your theme, too. For me, Reach for theStars is a tip of the hat to Paramount Pictures, myprofessional home for the past 18 years, and to itsiconic mountain and stars logo.

We’ll weave this theme through our manyactivities this year. And we have much planned, thanks to the scores of committee chairs andvolunteers. (See the center pullout in this issue.) Joinme at Activities Day on Sunday, January 27, to learnabout the fun that awaits. Whether you’re a cruiser, sailor, or landlubber; junior or not-so-junior; new orlongtime member, there’s something at the Club foryou. Come, explore, ask questions, meet new friends, and fill your calendar.

Our Club is steeped in tradition, and has enjoyedmany successes thanks to its members. One of ourspecial traditions is the Installation of Officers andAwards Dinner on Saturday, January 12. It is a time tocome together to formally welcome the incomingBridge, hear from our outgoing Commodore, JuniorStaff Commodore Mike Blecher, and recognize the

outstanding achievement of ourmembers in racing, long distancecruising, and service to the Club. It’snot just pomp and circumstance, but afun-filled evening of celebration, camaraderie and dancing. I hope tosee you there and one week earlier,on Saturday, January 5, when the

CYC Women’s Association installs its ExecutiveBoard.

On the lighter side (pun intended) will be theSummer Solstice Celebration on Saturday, June 22,with friendly competition among our variouscommittees and celebration of the longest day ofthe year. More time to celebrate is certainly causefor celebration. CYC enjoys a well-deservedreputation for excellent race management. Inaddition to the regattas we regularly host, the morenotable of which are the Sunset Series and CalRace Week, we are privileged to have LaserMidwinters West return to the Club in March andto host the Opti Team Trials in early May. Watchfor opportunities to lend a hand as those regattasdraw near. For those of you who’d like to learn torace, consider joining the Intro to Fleet Racingprogram in April and monthly throughout thesummer. For those looking for an adventure fartherfrom home, please join me on the Commodore’sCruise along the Danube River beginning in lateAugust. Our seven-night cruise from Budapest,Hungary, to Prague, Czech Republic, touches fivecountries along the way, and offers optional pre-and post-cruise extensions.

Whatever your passion, the Club is here foryour enjoyment. Those who get involved get moreout of the Club. Those who Reach for the Starsenjoy even more.

Thank you for the honor of serving as your2019 Commodore.

See you at the Club, on and around the water.

From theCommodore

On-the-Water Photo Contest Winner

In a bit of a departure, this month’sphoto contest winner is actually a

painting by Julia Dawson. It’s a photo ofan on-the-water painting so we’ve bent therules to allow “Spinnaker Party” to qualifyfor the contest.

“This painting has been a dream inmy head since I first saw the WetWednesday regattas from atop TV hill inSanta Barbara. I worked for the local ABCtelevision affiliate and the closest I got tosailing at the time was chauffeuring myson to the yacht club and getting him onboats to race. Wednesday nights were my

Can you see the 24th mystery boat? It canbe any boat you want it to be. CYCmembers’ boats in the painting includeWhitney Green’s Pacific, David Bell’sGlory B, Anthony Agoglia’s Sojourner II,and John Staff’s TBD. The red cross withthe blue field represents my Icelandicheritage. The scale of this painting fits mybig dream: it is 12 feet across and fourfeet tall.”

favorite time to drive down the hill. I wasmesmerized by the view driving towardsthe ocean. When the spinnakers arelaunched, the ocean looks fun and playful. The vibrant colors reflect on the oceanand it appears to be a raucous party.

Half of the sails in ‘Spinnaker Party’I have seen on the water while racing orfrom the race committee boat; others Ihave invented. The yellow starburstspinnaker on the left panel of this trypticis my dream sail. I race on the 55’Beneteau Ruby d’eau that is in the centerof the middle panel - winning of course!

The annual Women on Water/Woman at the Helmregatta (WOW/WAH) was held November 3-4,and hosted by ASMBYC and Del Rey YC. This

regatta is unique among offerings in Santa Monica Bay,in that all skippers are women: the WOW division has anall-female crew, while WAH divisions can have a coedcrew. WOW/WAH has a long history in Marina del Reyand came to its current format in 1980, when S/C RobertS. Wilson donated an antique silver loving cup to be usedas the perpetual trophy for the WOW division.

Over 70 women were on the water participating inthis regatta, and WAH entries definitely dominated thisyear, with 16 boats signed up with a coed crew, vying forthe WSA perpetual trophy, and three boats with an all-female crew, competing for the Wilson trophy for theWOW. In addition to these prestigious perpetuals, thisyear a new trophy was on the line – for the yacht clubwith greatest participation in the regatta. CYC had fourwomen skippering WAH boats, and handily won this newtrophy! CYC women skippers were Alicia Minana on herboat, Dark & Stormy, Jennifer Schmidt on ScottTorrance’s Forgiveness, Krista Harris finished third inWAH PHRF A on Doug Steele’s Tiburon, and HalliePetersen finished second in WAH PHRF B onCuchulainn, owned by Dan Murphy from PacificSinglehanded Sailing Association. This was KristaHarris’ second time on the helm of Tiburon and shecommented that “I wish there were other opportunitieslike this for women to learn more about racing and to gettime on the helm.”

In addition to these four CYC skippers, several CYCboats were out with women from other yacht clubs at thehelm: John Staff’s TBD, Jay Steinbeck’s Margaritaville1½, and Richard Benedon’s Ruby d’eau. John Staff hasbeen lending his boat to women to compete in thisregatta since the early ‘90s, but it was Jay Steinbeck’sfirst appearance in WOW. “I really enjoyed having thewomen crewing and skippering for this regatta,” he said.“They really listen and are so eager to learn more.” Bigthanks to these boat owners for their support of women’ssailing!

As is typical of November conditions, the regattahad relatively light winds, but the very flat seas and nicewarm weather made for enjoyable sailing. Thick fogrolled in on Sunday, limiting visibility at times to 200feet or so, making navigation as big a challenge asracing.

Next year this regatta will take place in August; startplanning now to take part. And join me in giving kudosto these women sailors for taking the initiative to grabthe helm and go racing!

CYC’s second annual Match Racing Intra-ClubChampionship was held on November 11, with teamscompeting to be crowned match racing champion

after a summer of Friday night matches. Our five skippers were Marilyn Cassedy, F/C Tim Clarke,

Alan Field, Grant Janov, and Will Petersen. The race coursewas situated just off Burton Chace Park and the teamscompleted a full round robin of 10 matches. The weather waslight and fickle but PRO Chris Calingaert did a great job ofgetting the races off.

S/C David Collins was our on-the-water umpire and wascalled into action a few times as boats jostled for positionduring the pre-start and around the course.

After an afternoon of competitive racing we gathered onthe pool patio for an informal debrief and food provided byCYC. At the prize-giving, Will Petersen was crownedchampion with three wins. Alan Field, Marilyn Cassedy, andTim Clarke were all tied with two wins each and, afterconsulting the rule book, the tie was broken with Alan takingsecond place and Marilyn finishing third.

A big thank you to Marilyn Cassedy for co-chairing theevent, David Collins for umpiring, and Chris Calingaert asPRO. We also appreciate the support of the Keelboat Programfor the use of the Club’s Martin 242s.

February marks the beginning of the2019 racing season at CYC and we arealways looking for new race committee

volunteers who would like to share in theexcitement of the regattas. Each regatta isstaffed with volunteers out on the water inSanta Monica Bay setting marks and signalingstarts, as well as the critical volunteers whohelp with registration and get the results out tothe racers at the end of the day from thecomfort of our clubhouse. It definitely takes ateam to put on a successful regatta.

The CYC Race Committee OrientationSeminar is scheduled on Saturday, February 2,from 9 a.m. to noon for anyone who wouldlike to know more about how a racecommittee functions. No prior experience isnecessary. Meeting in the hoist area, we willwalk through the process of setting up a racecourse and actually running the races, followed by hands-on opportunities with theactual equipment.

CYC is known for putting on great races.Race committee participation is a way to bepart of that tradition. It is also a way to meetnew people on the water and at the post-racesocial hour. For more information or to signup for the seminar, contact me [email protected].

With the recent California wildfires and the ever present danger of“The Big One” looming and in the news lately, many folks areasking themselves, “What can I do to be better prepared for the

next disaster?” Well, members of CYC’s Radio Amateur Group have beenthinking the same thing and have begun formulating a disaster protocol inthe event of another disaster. One facet of this new plan is to start a weekly2-meter net in which CYC hams and the local community can check inusing their 2-meter radios. In addition to checking the operational status ofyour radio gear, we will also be discussing topics related to disasterpreparation, communications, and yachting-related subjects as well.

What is the point of a net, you may ask? Good question. The purposeof a net is to practice using your radio as part of a larger communicationsnetwork that would be in place in the event of a disaster. During the Malibufires, the cellular network was affected and communications were nearlynonexistent in many of the affected areas. In one instance, civilian-ledrelief efforts were being coordinated by an individual on a hill with a cheapFamily Radio Service walkie-talkie that you would get at Best Buy!

The Radio Amateur Group has secured the use of the W6LMUrepeater located on the campus of Loyola Marymount University for ournet. The repeater is an open repeater which means any ham can use it. Thefrequency for the repeater is as follows:

Receive: 147.855Transmit: 147.255PL tone: 127.3The net is set to start on Tuesday, January 8, at 1900 hours (7 p.m.).

All CYC hams are welcome to check in. We will have the CYCCommunications Center open and manned during the net so feel free tostop by!

For further information on the net, email Scott Jarema [email protected].

Any CYC member who is interested in obtaining their ham licenseshould contact Charlie Pascal, WB6CIY, CYC RAG Chair [email protected] or inquire at the front desk.

2018 Commodores Ball Finds Treasure Under The Sea

By SUE PURCELL, Event Chair

Our clubhouse was transformed into an elegant ocean grotto for the 2018Commodores Ball to honor Commodore Mike Blecher and Barbie, and allCYC Staff Commodores. As guests arrived, the front entrance was awash

in shimmering blue waves and tiny bubbles, giving a hint of what awaited inside. The evening was full of merriment, feasting, and dancing.

The night began with an elegant cocktail hour during which guests enjoyeddelicious passed hors d’oeuvres and music by Rich Cohen. Attendees were greetedby a very special surprise guest - an enchanting mermaid. All were mesmerized bythis lovely treasure of the sea and everyone enjoyed having their picture taken withher.

Following the cocktail reception, guests were led to the dining room, decoratedin colors and treasures of the sea. Everyone received a seashell necklace, a nod tothe Commodore’s Cruise in Fiji. Once everyone was comfortable, Chef Fabio andteam served a sumptuous three-course feast, paired with wines specially selected byFood and Beverage Director Steve Bell. The decadent chocolate dessert was aunique treat specially created by Chef Fabio for Barbie.

Dancing carried on until the wee hours to the sounds and disco lights, providedby the band Retrofit.

A very special thanks to CYC staff whose help made the evening a success, especially Chef Fabio, Food andBeverage Director Steve Bell, Banquet Manager Luis Estrada, and Director of Catering Heidi Lilly.

Woo-hoo … a 200-mile(made good) day … that’senough to put a smile on

our faces! It was day 15 and we hadcome far already but still had a wayto go. Mike and I, along with ourfriend, Justin Connolly, left Marinadel Rey on March 28 to head south. After the obligatory stop in Avalon sowe could call friends from a “noisybar in Avalon” (thank you Crosby,Stills & Nash and “Southern Cross”),we headed Dash, our Taswell 56,southbound. How far south? Well, ourfirst stop would be Hiva Oa’,Marquesas, French Polynesia.

In just under 20 days it wasanchor down in Hiva Oa’ aftercompleting a 3,000 nm passage fromMarina del Rey to the Marquesas. Wesailed all but 12 hours of the trip andused only 30 gallons of fuel. Whatbroke on the boat - nothing! Did wehave enough provisions – absolutely(and still have some items in thefreezer from what I cooked before weleft). Did we have enough beer –absolutely not (and I’m not a beerdrinker and still wish we had broughtmore). Did we have enough wine andrum – absolutely! (Thank you, friends!) Were we ready for thecruising lifestyle – still getting there!

It has been a dream of ours to doexactly what we are doing and weknow how fortunate we are to beexperiencing all of this. We spentthree weeks in the Marquesas andwould have loved to spend more timethere. These are lush green islands;similar to Hawaii with jagged peakspoking out of the clouds. Then wemoved on to the Tuamotus … allatolls with fringing reefs with thehighest point being a palm tree. Weloved riding our bikes on the variousatolls as going up in elevation meantpedaling about three feet up. Thesnorkeling and diving are amazing(once you get used to the sharks). Oneday we saw synchronized bottlenosedolphins jumping six feet up in the airplaying in the standing waves at the

Cook’s Bay, Moorea, isdrop-dead gorgeous, Bora Bora’slagoon is amazing with all theshades of blue, and Huahine is thelaid back, enjoy-life island. Wehave finally gotten into thecruisers’ lifestyle where we staysomeplace longer than plannedbecause it is incredible. We movewhen we have to find an ATM orneed something from thesupermarket. The French baguetteis subsidized here and costsroughly 50 cents per – buy someham and we enjoy an amazinglunch.

We have had a wealth ofvisitors join us in the last fourmonths and enjoy all of our“mules” (eh – friends) bringing usmuch needed supplies (Mt. GayRum, peanut M&M’s and tortillasto mention just a few).

Our plan is to stay in FrenchPolynesia for a year. We hope toreturn to the Tuamotus andexpore more of this beautiful areabefore heading west onto Niue,Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, and NewZealand.

Some have asked about theboat’s name – Dash – well, weare living our dash … the linethat goes between the day you areborn and the day you die.

Fireside RoomThe February fiction selection for Book Mates is “Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine,”

by Gail Honeyman. Most of us have probably encountered an Eleanor Oliphant somewherealong the way, a profoundly lonely, socially awkward person who never quite fits in and hashabits that verge on fetish. Gail Honeyman’s portrayal of Eleanor is truthful yet verycharitable, so when events conspire to challenge her solitary and quirky life, readers are drawnin with sympathy and compassion as we realize that there may be a bit of Eleanor in all of us.The moderator is V/C Stephanie Weston. Chairs are Virginia and Ira Teller. Call the Club forreservations and lunch information.

Happy Hour BooksWednesday, January 16, 6:30 p.m.

Fireside RoomJanuary’s selection is “Astoria: John Jacob Astor and Thomas Jefferson's Lost Pacific

Empire: A Story of Wealth, Ambition, and Survival,” by Peter Stark. This promises to be agreat read about the founding of the first colony in Oregon, a true-adventure tale of the 1810Astor Expedition, a now forgotten three-year journey to forge an empire on the Pacific Coast.Peter Stark offers a harrowing saga in which a band of explorers battled nature, starvation, andmadness to establish the first American settlement in the Pacific Northwest and opened upwhat would become the Oregon Trail. (Summarized from Book Browse.) Marie Hedlund willmoderate.

The February selection is “The Innocent Man: Murder and Justice in a Small Town,” byJohn Grisham. Like most of Grisham’s work, it is about legal issues, but this is nonfiction. Thebook tells the story of Ron Williamson of Ada, Oklahoma, a former minor league baseballplayer who was convicted in 1988 of rape and murder and sentenced to death. After serving 11years on death row, he was exonerated and released in 1999. This gripping tale of police workand the justice system will be released as a Netflix documentary series in 2019. H appy Hour Books convened November 14 to discuss ourbook, “1968: The Year That Rocked the World,” by MarkKurlansky, and enjoy our wine and cheese. After some

initial discussion guided by moderator Amber Spence, everyonegot into the specific things that affected them in 1968. Somepeople, who hadn’t yet been born in 1968, talked about how theirparents were affected. Others talked about their own personalexperiences and what a tumultuous year 1968 was. We brieflydiscussed some of the big events like Robert Kennedy’s andMartin Luther King’s assassinations, as well as the DemocraticNational Convention which was disturbed by riots and policebrutality. Everyone carried some pretty strong opinions about theimpact of 1968 on their lives and also how it reflected a changing, revolutionary feeling in the whole country. Society was movingfrom the generation who experienced World War II to the nextgeneration, one of rebellion and interesting changes in life, including sex, drugs, and social mores. Thank you to moderatorAmber Spence for guiding a very lively discussion with a greatdeal of interesting back-and-forth feedback.

Our January 16 book is “Astoria,” by Peter Stark. Thisshould be a great read about Thomas Jefferson and John Astoriafounding the first colony in Oregon. It will be moderated byMarie Hedlund.

The February 20 book is “The Innocent Man,” by JohnGrisham, who normally writes fiction, but wrote this nonfictionbook about a murder in Oklahoma. The moderator will be AnnaWhite.

M y Brilliant Friend,” the first of fourNeapolitan novels by Elena Ferrante, resonated with most of the Book Mates

readers at our December 6 luncheon. After a holidaytoast and recognition of the year’s moderators, MichelleSegina took charge of the discussion. Michelle advisedus that regardless of any articles that have appeared innewspapers and online, the true identity of the author,Elena Ferrante, who has achieved international best-selling fame, remains a mystery. What is no mystery isthe elegant writing style and ability to involve us in thelives of two very different and complex young women,Elena and Lila, whose intense friendship and rivalry isat the core of the novel.

There were many varied opinions on the complextemperaments and talents of Elena and Lila. Is one goodand the other bad? Could one exist without the other?Who is the more adventurous, the more frozen in timeand place? And, which one might be the “brilliantfriend” of the title? According to a Michelle, one bookreviewer described Elena and Lila as “brilliantenemies.”

Clearly the author succeeded in creating a self-contained, claustrophobic, poverty-stricken, 1950sNaples setting. We witness family feuds, domesticbattles, and the lingering effects of World War II as theyimpact the lives, loves, fortunes, and misfortunes of allthe characters. Despite the large cast, the authorprovided vivid portraits of each and we were neveroverwhelmed. Although the males are all subsidiarycharacters, they serve an important purpose, someraging against their circumstances, some protectors ofLila and Lena, and some simply manipulated by bothyoung women. The casual display of daily violence asan accepted way of life surprised many of us.

Other themes discussed were the parent-childrelationships, women struggling in a male-dominatedsociety, loyalty, and ambition. Michelle insisted thatLena was envious, not jealous of Lila’s innate talents. Finally, the current HBO series was compared with thenovel and received a wide variety of comments.

Our February 7 fiction choice is “Eleanor Oliphantis completely fine,” by Gail Honeyman, an endearingdebut that is part comic novel, part emotional thriller, and part love story, V/C Stephanie Weston willmoderate.

Our March 7 selection is the fact-based fiction“The Rent Collector,” by Camron Wright. SEO DonnaPetersen will moderate.
