would like to thank you for making me feel so welcome during my first month at Beau Chêne. I am really

enjoying working here and look forward to meeting the rest of you!

Membership Opportunity!Throughout the months of April and May, we will be offering our members a special rewards deal: Anyone that recruits/sponsors a new member will receive a credit to their BCCC account. The value of the credit will depend on which membership category the new member purchases. In addition, the new member’s account will be credited the

same amount as the referring member’s account. The credit values are as follows:

Golf Membership-$200.00Sports Membership-$100.00Social Membership-$50.00

If you know of a neighbor, business associate, friend and/or family member who has expressed an interest in BCCC membership, there is no time like the present to sponsor that individual/family. Note: These “account credit rewards” will apply to all new members whose memberships are effective April 1st – May 31st.

I

Please allow me to introduce our newest members, Cory and Kasey Lopez! I know you will join me in giving them a warm welcome to the Beau Chêne community! Cory is an avid golfer and excited to introduce the kids to the game of golf. Kasey is most interested in taking advantage of the group fitness classes and enjoying pool time with family.

They enjoy casual dining, but are looking forward to having brunch with the family on Sundays as well as enjoying pool events, bingo nights with the family and exploring the tasting events (wine and spirits).

When not playing golf, Cory enjoys fishing and barbecuing while Kasey enjoys photography, yoga and dining with friends. Both are graduates of LSU. Cory is a Turnaround Specialist at Shell Oil while Kasey is a registered Dietician and owner/photographer at K. Lyn Photography.

Also joining this past month are Nicholas and Tori Kahl who recently relocated to Mandeville from Pensacola, FL. Tori is an LSU grad and is the Market President for iHeartRADIO New Orleans. Nick graduated from Indiana University’s Kelly School of Business, and owns IPS, Inc. an Industrial Supplier of Civil Procurement. The two of them and their two children love the feel of the Beau Chêne neighborhood and of course plenty of BCCC family-friendly activities, especially summers at the pool while Nick looks forward to checking out the BCCC golf courses.

Welcome New Members

Tennis Newsby John Ballard, Tennis Director

H ello April! We hope you will be the beautiful tennis month we look forward to each year! This has been a crazy spring season

for our league players with lots of dreaded make-up matches and rain outs. Let’s be prepared to take advantage of this month which hopefully provides numerous perfect tennis days for us because we have a lot going on at the tennis center.

First of all, our most popular event, the Crawfish Tennis Social will be held on Saturday April 13th from 4 p.m. to 7(ish). Annually, this event is a blast! Fun tennis with friends, cold beer and drinks, and of course crawfish...that sounds like the perfect Saturday night! Space is limited for this one, so make sure you sign up early. Please call or stop by the tennis desk to get signed up.

The March Beginner/Begin Again program is coming to a close but has been a huge success. We have seven ladies that are either coming back to tennis or starting for the first time and they have been a really good group…and they are picking it up fast! For all of us, let’s be encouraging and help get them to stick with it and help get them plugged in to Beau Chêne Tennis.

Our junior tennis program is in a great place. We have a wonderful group of kids

while catering to all different levels and ages. Coach Oscar ran a junior league last month and the kids are responding with some good tennis. The quality of play from the participants of this program has gone up a ton, having played regular matches five weekends in a row. This league will be extremely beneficial for our kids as the USTA Junior Team Tennis League is starting up this month and our kids are ready to play well and represent Beau Chêne. Please feel free to ask me about getting your child on a team, if you’re interested.

Also, be on the lookout for some changes to our adult clinic schedule beginning the first week of April. We will be shifting the Men’s “Rush and Crush” from Wednesday at 7 p.m. to Tuesday night at 7 p.m. This will work better for guys to have a fun/competitive clinic before their Wednesday night USTA matches. That’s always one of the best hours of the week!

Lastly, I know it may be a little early, but USTA Mixed Doubles season is starting up at the end of May. It is getting to be that time to start forming your teams for a fun summer mixed doubles season. If you have any questions regarding tennis at Beau Chêne, please contact me or the tennis desk because we’d love to take care of you! See you on the courts!

Perfect day for a Northlake B match!

Even when it is wet or raining,we can still play inside!

Ladies Beginnier/Begin Again Group...pure tennis fun!

Give our junior tennis program a try! It is really fun and your kids will love it!

Fitness Newsby Mary Piper, Fitness Director

It’s spring and it’s that time of year we bring out our shorts, sundresses, sleeveless tops and yes, bathing suit weather is right around the corner.

For those of us who have been putting off getting back in shape, remember it’s never too late to start! I know how hard it is for some people who don’t go to the gym because they either feel intimidated or they are uncomfortable because they do not know how to use the machines or what to do with the free weights. So, for those who keep putting it off, I am putting together a Free Fit Beginnings: Basic Fundamentals Group Training Class to help those who want to start working out but don’t know where to begin. This program will be once a week for 4 weeks every Wednesday from 9:15-10:15 starting April 10th, limit 6 people. We will go over basic fundamentals, form for free weights, and weight machines. We are offering this

to our Fitness and Social Members! Call 504-250-5521 to reserve your space. Do you have some activities scheduled for your children the week of Easter while they are out of school? Do you want them to get out of the house for a bit and do something? We are holding a Kids Fitness class Monday, April 22 – Friday, April 26th from 1-2:00pm. We will have fun working out on the weight machines, free weights, TRX, playing kickball outside weather permitting and doing some body weight workouts. Ages 9-13, $15/day, call 504-250-5521 to reserve.

Farewell to LeAnnMy first hire after I was hired as Fitness Director was LeAnn Gombo. I don’t know how, but LeAnn called me out of the blue telling me that someone mentioned to her we were looking for instructors. To this day

Fitness Membersof the month

Thomas Danos

Continued on page 10

I have no clue how that happened because at the time I had not told anyone I was looking. She was a God send. I needed an Aqua instructor and LeAnn seamlessly took over that position and immediately grew that class. Our members love her as do everyone who meets her. When Aqua classes were near the end of summer, we added our Posture & Balance class and her Aqua participants followed. Not too long ago we added a Low-Impact Cardio and LeAnn was up for the challenge, took the class and immediately became a success. So, it is with great sadness for everyone at the Fitness Center to see LeAnn move. Her husband is in the military and they are headed out the beginning of May to Virginia. We all wish LeAnn and her family the best of luck for all their future endeavors. We will be going to lunch to say farewell to LeAnn on Thursday, April 18th. If anyone would like to join us please give me a call 504-250-5521.

This month we would like to highlight Tom Danos as our Fitness Member of the Month. Tom started coming to the Fitness Center back in July and religiously goes to yoga classes and has recently added other classes to his schedule. His moto is “sound body/sound mind” and we are hoping that all our members feel this way when they leave the Fitness center. Congratulations Tom on keeping motivated and being persistent with your workouts! It is a pleasure to see you around the gym.

How long have you been a Beau Chêne Fitness Member?I’ve been a fitness member since last July.

What made you decide to join the Fitness Center? My wife, Susan and her sister, Lezlee Theo, encouraged me to join. We had been going irregularly to another fitness facility.

Did you have any fitness or weight loss goals? I want to maintain a level of strength and flexibility.

What classes have you been to? I've been to Gentle Stretch Yoga, Slow Flow Yoga, Circuit Training and Pilates Fusion. All are fun, challenging, and terrific. This completes my list of classes.

How many classes do you attend each week?I try to attend four or five classes a week when my schedule allows.

What is it that inspires you to keep going back to the classes?I almost always feel better physically when class is over, so that is my motivation to go to class even when I'm not motivated.

What is your favorite part of the fitness center? My favorite part of the fitness center is the fact that it is clean and neat. The staff is friendly and the instructors are skilled and know their stuff.

Statistics show that most people start off great when they join a gym but then after a month or two never go back. What motivates you to keep going?

Golf Course Newsby Ted Smith, Director of Agronomy

n 2018, we recorded close to 90 inches of rain – 28 inches above average! To put this total into perspective,

the national average rainfall amount is 39 inches! Between January 1st and March 31st, we received approximately 15 inches of rain. Though this amount is not abnormal for our region during the winter months (considering last year we recorded close to 16 inches in the month of March alone), we received an overabundance of rain in October, November and December, which is generally our driest time of the year. Leading into January, our clay based soils were already overly saturated. With the high frequency of storms, high humidity and cloudy weather, our courses continued to stay wet and limited our ability to mow and maintain the turf. (BCCC No. 1544)When we finally experienced a dry stretch in mid-March, our staff did a phenomenal job turning what was beginning to look like a “wetland” back into golf courses. We were not only able to get all of our fairways, tees and approaches mowed, blown and cleaned up, but we also finished spraying all of our pre-emergent herbicide (which is time sensitive and vitally important to limit the infestation of grassy and broadleaf weeds).

Through all of the wet conditions, our staff persevered to complete the renovation of the greenside bunkers on #3, #4 (back bunker) and #14 of the Magnolia Course. We reshaped all three bunkers in order to minimize washouts; therefore, preventing contamination of the sand from the subsurface soil. We also installed new drainage and bunker sand in all three. In addition, the right greenside bunker on #6 of the Magnolia Course has been eliminated and converted into a “grass bunker”. Not only is the playability of these renovated areas a vast improvement, but each of these holes has been aesthetically enhanced - adding more enjoyment and hopefully less frustration to your round!

I

As a friendly reminder, please adhere to daily cart rulings, remember to repair ball marks on greens, and fill your divots with sand. Following these rules and practicing proper course etiquette will go a long way in helping us maintain course conditions. If you have any questions, please feel free to send an email to [email protected]. Best regards,Ted Smith, Director of Agronomy

Thanks for all you do to make Beau Chêne such a great club!

April Staff Anniversaries

It's become a habit and I'm a creature of habit. A good habit, for sure.

What is your favorite exercise? Least? My favorite is the gentle stretch Yoga and my least favorite is any cardio exercise.

How important is nutrition to you? What diet do you follow?I follow no diet plan but try to be moderate in things. I feel better when I give my digestive system several hours between meals.

How do you feel incorporating fitness into your lifestyle has helped in other ways besides physically?I want to believe in the adage "Sound Mind/Sound Body” and vice versa. I hope it's true!

What would you say to people who are residents but not Fitness Members at Beau Chêne?The fact that the classes are included in the membership fee makes membership a good value.

Any advice you can offer to those who want to start with a fitness program but just can’t seem to make that first step?I suggest easing into a routine and avoid super strenuous exercise in the beginning. Take advantage of the expert advice that is available at the Fitness Center.

#14 of the Magnolia Course.
