Global Demographics

• Estimated one billion people with disabilities in the world– Poorer health outcomes– Lower education achievements– Less economic participation– Higher rates of poverty

Global Demographics• Across 59 countries surveyed by the 2002-2004 World Health Survey

– Average prevalence of disability is 15.6% of adults (some 650 million)• Average of 11.8% in higher income countries• Average of 18% in lower income countries

– Prevalence of disability among people 60 years and older• Average of 29.5% in higher income countries• Average of 43.4 % in lower income countries

• People with disability population will grow as a result of the aging population

• Approximately 80% of people with disabilities live in developing countries

• Research suggests significant costs due to productivity losses – Costs in Asia lie between 3 percent (US$ 1.8 billion) of 2006 GDP in Vietnam

and 4.6 (US$ 9.6 billion) percent of 2007 GDP in Thailand

exceeds $1 trillion/$220 billion in discretionary spending• In 1995, people with disabilities spent $81.7 billion in

travel (does not include expenditures of their family, friends and escorts).
