With the tool, customers can address potentialperformance issues before they affect theirbusiness.

In a bid to unify database performancemanagement, CA on April 16 introduced anadvanced analysis and diagnostic tool for itsdatabase management product.

Dubbed CA Insight Database Performance Monitorfor Distributed Databases, the performanceanalysis tool allows administrators to monitor boththe real-time and historical performance of all anenterprise's databases from a single window.Featuring a database quality-of-service index, itsynthesizes multiple performance indicators andpresents the status of each database as a single,color-coded and numeric indicator.

Users also can view specific database serverconditions such as inadequate free space, I/Obottlenecks and high CPU utilization. Through itsintegration with CA's browser-based,multidatabase administration tool - CA DatabaseCommand Center - CA Insight DPM for DistributedDatabases enables customers to address potentialperformance issues before they affect thebusiness, officials at the Islandia, N.Y., companycontend.

CA Database Management also includes newreleases of CA TSreorg for Distributed Databasesand CA Fast Unload for Distributed Databases, aswell as CA Database Command Center, which isavailable to customers for no charge. Whencombined with CA Insight DPM for DistributedDatabases, these products enable users tomanage multiple databases and database typeswith a single product license, reducing the cost andcomplexity for managing large databaseenvironments, officials added.

CA officials said this release signals the beginningof a new strategy for database performance

management integration. IT organizations can nowgather performance information from databasesacross the enterprise and deliver that data to CAUnicenter Network and Systems Management,officials said.

"As part of this strategy we are delivering deeperintegration between CA's database managementproducts and our systems, network and applicationmanagement products, thereby extending the viewof database performance to IT operations staff,"said Rick Bolesta, vice president of developmentfor CA's database management product line, in aninterview with eWEEK. "Namely the non-DBA … thatunderstands the systems from a systems view, anetwork view or an administration view."

CA plans to make the same database performancedata available to its network and applicationperformance management products - eHealth,Spectrum and Wily Introscope, Bolesta said.

Bolesta said CA Insight supports four databaseplatforms: Oracle, IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL Serverand Sybase.

"In addition, a customer can license one version ofCA Insight and have support for all four databases,"he said.

Bolesta touted the quality-of-service index as aboost to database administrators.
