with famous San Francisco landmarks made out of surgical instruments, and participated in the Best Dressed Contest during the ASTSA Student Forum. During their small window of down time, students took in the sites and visited the famous Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Fisherman’s Warf and even shopped in China town. This was an amazing educational opportunity for everyone who participated. Participants met many Certified Surgical Technologists and students from across the United States, with which they shared ideas and their passion for the Surgical Technology Field. They look forward to participating in the 2012 National Conference, which will be held in Washington, DC.

On May 9th, the Cabarrus College Association of Nursing Students (CCANS) held a capping ceremony to recognize the ADN graduates. Thirty students were presented with caps during the ceremony. It was a particularly moving ceremony, as several of the graduates had asked nurses in their family to cap them. Students invited family and friends to share in this momentous occasion. A small reception was held following the ceremony.

The nursing cap has long been a symbol of the nursing profession. It was first introduced by Florence Nightingale, who was responsible for the development of training programs for nurses, as well as the design of the first nursing uniforms. The nurse’s cap was designed after a nun’s habit, as a way to give credit to the work of nuns as the earliest nurses.

Faculty and Staff Awards

On April 28, 2011, Cabarrus College celebrated the grand opening of their new Simulation Lab. The 525 square foot lab housed on the third floor of CMC-NorthEast consists of two simulation mannequins that are “cared for” in two fully functioning patient rooms with a dedicated nurse’s station. These mannequins simulate human patients and have human capabilities such as heart, lung and bowel sounds, vital signs and gender specific anatomy.

The use of simulation in nursing education and training allows participants the ability to practice real life situations in a non-threatening atmosphere. Cabarrus College is excited to have the mannequins join the College family.

Pictured at Right: Renée Hyde (L), Program Chair of the Associate Degree Nursing Program and Lisa Tardo-Green (R), Clinical Faculty Member in the Associate Degree Nursing Program, cut the ribbon to commemorate this historic moment!

During the summer of 2011, 27 Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA), students from Cabarrus College completed their service learning hours at the Wings of Eagles Therapeutic Horseback Riding Camp.  This was the largest number of OTA students to ever be involved in working with the camp. This allowed the camp to be safely expanded from four days to five days for 24 campers.  In addition to the 24 campers with special abilities and needs, there were 28 adolescent volunteers, who assisted with side-walking, grooming and feeding

the horses, as well as, camp chores.  The camp also accommodated the largest number of campers with profound developmental disabilities and multiple medical, mental health, and physical needs.  There were six campers that required wheelchairs, four needed walkers, two forearm crutches, and two utilized strollers for functional mobility. The OTA students were fabulous as they worked closely to transfer campers on and off horses, into and out of any required functional mobility equipment, and seat children within musical, craft, and snack activities. They did this in extreme heat and humidity, smiling throughout, with never a cross word spoken. Everyone regularly squirted each other with water to keep cool, and a wonderful time was had by all!  Favorite activities included: the Flying Squirrel, Human Carwash, Zip-line, singing to live music, and the rock climbing wall. Frogs, fish, dogs, lizards, horses, butterflies and sun sort of sum up the whole experience!

2011 was the first for many things at Wings of Eagles. Because of our increased student involvement, three faculty were present each day.  The students were fortunate that our Anatomy and Physiology instructor Zinat Hassanpour; our Chancellor, Dr. Dianne Snyder, and Provost, Dr. Margaret Patchett, came out to the camp, in addition to our Occupational Therapy Assistant faculty: Carol Fain, Jennifer Lowder,

and Nancy Green.  Zinat provided integrated instruction in muscles and anatomy.  The significant increase in Cabarrus College faculty facilitated hands-on learning experiences and multiple opportunities for instruction in basic activities of daily living. The camp could not have accommodated the large number of campers, the wide variety of diagnoses, or the incredible offerings of activities and choices, without the involvement of the OTA program students and the Cabarrus College faculty.  The faculty commend the OTA students on their remarkable work!

Announcements

Nova B. Stephens ‘53, reported: “Six members of the Cabarrus Memorial School of Nursing, Class of 1953 met August 15th at the College. There were also two guests present: Joyce Deal, class of 1957 and Iris Porter, who worked with Dr. Floyd and helped us with our basketball and softball teams. Each year, our class played the doctors in a softball game, which was a lot of fun! Only 12 of the 25 class members who started in the fall of 1950 graduated. Three of our classmates have passed away and three were unable to attend for health reasons. Attending were, (see picture below) Sis Pethel Mills, Dorothy Wood Wagoner, Nancy Carriker Blackwelder, Betty Query Sides, Maxine Herman Brown and Nova Beatty Stephens. We missed Ruby Clodfelter Bates, Emily Russell Bland and Margaret Thomas Lowe who were unable to attend. It was great to see each other and learn what happened since our last meeting several years ago, and to reminisce about our years together. We were also pleased to learn of the current status of Cabarrus College.”

Frieda Stengel ‘54, is proud that her family is carrying on the family tradition! She has a great-niece that recently graduated from Cabarrus College and another great-niece that is working in the Oncology Department at CMC-NorthEast.

Joyce Moser ‘60, reports that she is enjoying retirement! She loves spending time with her two beautiful grandchildren, ages four and six. She also spends her time gardening, reading, doing Yoga and Tai Chi, and just being!

Anne Lowdermilk McBride ’74, submitted this photo of herself and three of her Class of 1974 Nursing classmates. The picture was taken around the first of this year, when they all got together at Lucky 32 in Winston-Salem.

Pictured above are: Janice McLaughlin Galloway, Anne Lowdermilk McBride, Sheila Satterfield Brady, and Dr. Claire Wilson, DDS. Anne said they had a great time and, as always, had plenty to talk about!

Kathy Dayvault ‘79, ‘05, had her first article published as the sole author, in the spring 2011 issue of the Tracker, a free journal for occupational health and safety professionals. Kathy has been contributing to another journal for a year on a regular basis. You can download a PDF version of the full publication from www.puresafety.com.

In July of this year, Marietta Abernathy ’97, ‘07, began her new position as Director of Children’s Services at the Jeff GordonChildren’s Hospital. Marietta received her RN and BSN from Cabarrus College and is currently pursuing a duel MSN/MBA degree from Gardner Webb University.

Melissa Mills Crist ‘09, gave birth to Allan James “AJ” Crist (pictured at right) on April 14, 2011. Melissa also has a 2-year old daughter, Haley.
