Welcome Croeso

The County Borough of Caerphilly is located in the heart of southern Wales and straddles the ancient county boundaries ofMonmouthshire and Glamorgan. With its distinct history andheritage, and once an ‘early medieval kingdom’, the area thatbecame known as ‘Glamorgan’ was a conflict point between theNorman lords and the Welsh princes, with the area being defined bya large concentration of castles, Caerphilly Castle to name one. Afterfalling under English rule in the 16th century, Glamorgan became amore stable county and exploited its natural resources to become animportant part of the British Industrial Revolution.

With such close proximity to Cardiff, the County Borough ofCaerphilly is an ideal base with a fantastic blend of activities, stunning countryside and first class visitor attractions. Caerphillytown itself is less than 15 minutes from Cardiff by train and only 10 miles by car or bus. With excellent rail links to Cardiff throughoutthe county borough, giving visitors the choice of city shopping andentertainment or the more laid back atmosphere of the CountyBorough of Caerphilly.

Dominating the town of Caerphilly this medievalcastle was built mainly between 1268 and 1271by Gilbert ‘The Red’ de Clare to stop Llewellyn apGruffudd’s southward ambitions, with extensivewater defences and a tower that outleans that ofPisa. Amazingly, the tower has leaned 3m out ofthe perpendicular since 1648!

Bit of a talking point…Rated in the UK Ramblers ‘top ten access areas in Wales’ is thehistoric ‘Twmbarlwm Iron Age Hillfort’; not only is it the highest pointin the County Borough of Caerphilly but you’ll experience the mostamazing views across rolling landscape of South East Wales.Accessible from Cwmcarn Forest, across forest tracks and opencommon land, this historical site contains part of the scheduledancient monument known as the ‘Mound and Bailey Castle’. Evidenceexists for a Bronze Age cairn and an Iron Age rampart and ditch.

Ffili fact…Caerphilly Castle is thelargest Castle in Walesoccupying an impressive30 acre site – it’s thesecond largest Castle inBritain after WindsorCastle.

Situated above Risca on the Twmbarlwm mountain, Louise Saundersand her family run a working sheep farm and 3 stunning selfcatering cottages, two of which have been converted from a 400year old stone barn. With stunning views over the welsh bordervalley towards the Severn Bridges and beyond, it feels a millionmiles away from civilisation, yet only 10 minutes drive to the M4.

A room with a view

“I woke up one morning, looked at our view and thought ‘I wish Icould bottle this’! Coincidently, this thought occurred about thetime our stone barn was in serious danger of falling down. Unableto justify the cost of repair for animal use and unwilling to allow itto fall down completely, we hit on the idea of holiday cottages.”

“Some three years later, 4 star Visit Wales grading in hand, westarted our little business and I have to say, have not looked backsince! The variety of guests from all walks of life have really provedthis decision to be a good one. They seem to like our cottages, views and welcome as much as I enjoy their visits. Some guests have become firm friends that we are able to welcomeback time and time again; others tell their friends about us andeven those staying with us through work have been known torequest us because of the quality and comfort of our cottages”.

“A business yes, but oh, so much more”.
