Cag’s Annuals 60 years… part two

Page 2: CAG Annuals Research - Part 2

(21) 1969/70-Twenty first annual:

The cover is designed by N. Sangle’. He is trying to aptly express in short note on cover the idea “As long as there exists a stiff gap between creative and imaginative mind and productive and governing mind, what then is creativity in Indian Advertising, a smallest part of nothing where designers and artists have been reduced almost to a level of manual labor.” He has rendered it in radiant red moue colour in most vibrant brush strokes, depicting human face through it. Cag letters arranged in matchstick strokes and marbles in blue in circular space is modern in approach.

Page 3: CAG Annuals Research - Part 2

“Cag is the only organization in India which caters

to the interests of applied art and the artists. It is

not a union of artists demanding privileges and

right and airing likes and dislikes in the working

conditions in the field, it is an educational body

working for improving the standard of applied art

in general and of the designers in particular.

These objectives are to a great extent achieved by

the Cag exhibition and by the publication of an

annual which projects a fair image of the modern

trend in advertising in India.” V. D. Kuray the

President in his address of the annual show. This

clearly shows the role of the Cag and its activities

being showcased in the work published.

The cover by V. N. Ranade

explains his visual concept in the

issue itself “A magnificent outer

structure of the communication

centre of the CAG, studded with

many facets”.

touch and feel. Mr. Gangoly’s specialty was adaption of Indian style of drawings for advertisement purpose.

This is a Silver Jubilee issue which is combining three years work of Indian Advertising Art. An interesting letter written by S. K. Kooka to Mr. S. Das Gupta the president about describing the creation of India’s world famous mascot Air India’s Maharaja. This is the most archival material because we get to see the formation of the mascot as a drawing and conception of the brand image of Air India international aviation company. An interesting article by Mr. Sanat Lahiri the chairman of Indian Society of Advertisers Ltd. expressing an insight about how to evaluate advertising effectiveness. The entire issue gives glimpse of seventies new trends emerging. Sylvester DaCunha the man who created great Indian Campaign Of Amual Butter,Lintas India’s Standard Battery Campaign,Prahlad Kakkar’s Film Script Story board etc. and many such pure Indian Advertising Art is showcased in this annual. Media/Category application: Press Ads, Magazine Ads., Outdoor Advertising, Packaging, Editorial Art, Direct Mail, Calendars, Point of Sale, Trade Mark, Symbol, Type Design & Calligraphy, Copy Oriented Press Ads., Copy Oriented Press Ads.+ Language, Advertising Films, Applied Photography, and Student’s Work .

Page 8: CAG Annuals Research - Part 2

The cover design by Samir Khanzode. It is the super imposition of multiplied photographic image of pigeon. The scroll of 27th CAG annual is tied to this bird depicting it as the carrier of message. It is also manipulated with color separation print methodology with vignette colours from blue to red. It is classic example of the fusion between concept and print reproduction.

27) 1974-76-Twenty-seventh annual

Page 9: CAG Annuals Research - Part 2

The veteran Mr. S. Das Gupta handed over the president ship to the next Mr. Brendan C. Pereira who was instrumental in changing the mainstream Indian Advertising Art. Mr. S. Das Gupta is nostalgic in the editorial of the issue. This issue helps to study the changing scenario of this creative business. The advertising agencies like Chaitra, MCM, Rediffusion, Everest, Shilpi, etc. created truly new Indian Advertising art language. This issue showcases many examples in creative areas like art, copy writing, typography, photography, film, display design and beginning of photo-montage illustrations, Applied Photography. The efforts of Mr. Brendan C. Pereira and his team of Cag’ for starting new categories like Hall of Fame, Art Director of the year, Copywriter of the year etc. are new added values of all the next issues. Mr. Samir Khanzode became the first Art Director of the Year. From this annual such creative person’s work is showcased. Art Director of the Year was asked to Design the annual and started expressing free interpretations, a special page of Media/Category application which did an interesting look for the issue.Media/Category application: Calendar, Magazine Ads., Press Ads., Campaigns, Typographic Advt., Advertisement single Indian Language., Illustrations, Direct Mail, Outdoor Advertising, Packaging, Editorial Art, Point of Sale, Corporate Design, Advertising Films, Applied Photography, and Art Director of the Year.

(28) 1976-77-Twenty-eighth annual: Cover design by Mr. Arun Kale and a Sculpture by A.L.Godbole is depicting the concept of creative artist in a modern graphic way.

This work of art is dynamic in terms of new trend of basic visual thinking inspired from American and European visual language. This is a sort of humanizing the object like surreal art.

Page 11: CAG Annuals Research - Part 2

The period of 1970’s brought about new technology trends and

the impact of it on the Indian Advertising Art is visible in the categories

covered in this annual. Famous animator Mr.Ram Mohan’s Amul butter

hoarding illustration is delightful to watch. Art Director of the Year award

was given to Mr. Arun Kale. Work is showcased. Art Director of the Year was

asked to Design the annual and started expressing free interpretations a special

page of Media\Category application which did an interesting look for the issue.

It is also interesting to read the quotation of Mr. Kamalesh Pandy about the Art

Director. This gives a view of each other i.e. how copywriter thinks about the Art

Director. It is like Text talking about Image in professional practice.Media/Category application: Campaigns, Press Campaigns, Single Press Ads., Typographic Advt.,

Advertisement single Indian Language., Illustrations, , Advertising Films, , Outdoor Advertising,

Posters, Point of Sale, Calendars, Packaging, Corporate Design, Editorial Art, Direct Mail, and Art

Director of the Year.

which is hand drawn illustration.

This is surreal style visual showing the

idea of imagination of a creative brain.

A typical of an old commercial art

approach recalled in flood of

mechanization of life.

This issue showcases new emerging

technologies in the area of print

medium. The application of

reproduction methodology was explored

in photography, typography to

communicate message to be given to

the intended target.

(29) 1978-Twenty-ninth annual

Page 13: CAG Annuals Research - Part 2

The dominance of copywriting in several

campaigns is worth studying. The Poster series

illustrated by Avinash Godbole for Air India

International under Art Director J.B.Cowasji is

new wave visual language emerging in

80’s.When this is compared to the same client’s

work done by then creative artist like

S.V.Wagulkar who pioneered new Indian applied

visual art language visible in Air India’s

International Poster series in 1958 Cag’s annual

gives an idea of how visual transition took place

during a time of thirty years.

An interesting focus on local dialect in Indian language seen in the Marathi language category

of by the agency Ad impact Advertising for local product like “ Spices-Masalas” used in

curries etc. is beautifully conceptualized as strategy by Art Director Shantaram Pawar in his

new calligraphic style blending the typical Marathi dialogue in narrative form.

“This is surreal style visual” only creative artist mind can visually think.

Page 14: CAG Annuals Research - Part 2

This is perhaps first of “Local to Global” trend attempted. Text and Image blending which

was not much visible earlier came in full application boldly during this time. “Copywriter or

Art Director, who is first?” most debatable question then being asked, we can see many

interesting examples of mainstream Indian Advertising Art in Mumbai happening on this

issue. Mr. Brendan C. Pereira is one of the pioneers of this trend. Continued from the last

issue, Art Director of the Year award to Mr. Arun Kale and showcased the work of this

creative person. Art Director of the Year was asked to Design the annual and started

expressing free interpretations a special pages of Media/Category application which did an

interesting look for the issue. It is also interesting to read the quotation of copywriter

Mr. Kamalesh Pandy about the Art Director. This gives a view of each other i.e. how

(30) 1978-79-Thirtieth annual: Cover

design by Mr. Sudarshan Dheer. A

mixed and match of photograph and

illustration. This is the beginning of

digital image manipulation ideas. The

new digital technology which was

being used in the West is reflected in

this work of art.

The cover design is not direct

application of the said technology.

(30) 1978-79-Thirtieth annual:

Page 17: CAG Annuals Research - Part 2

Mr. Brendan C. Pereira-president took over for next 18 years responsibilities of Cag’s activities. He did new changes gradually that are seen in the annuals showcase of work. Here he mentions that last 30 years Cag’s efforts are the only record of Indian Advertising Art. The trend of earlier new emerging technologies in the area of print medium is visible in this issue.

…“the only record of

Indian Advertising

Art.”

Page 18: CAG Annuals Research - Part 2

Corporate Branding Concept introduced by Mr.Y.T.Chaudhary then

continued by Sudharshan Dheer, Viru Hiremath is interesting to

see happening first time in Indian Advertising Art. The redefining

of Packing Design by Mr. Y.T.Chaudhary is also an added value of

the issue. Newly defined illustration styles started creating impact

against the new photography’s invasion.

The cover of Science Today for The Times of

India visualized and illustrated by Nana (Nanda) Shivalkar was the first effort in the

direction of scientific illustration. This was introduced in India by Sir J.J.Inst.of Applied

Art-1940’s student Mr. Prayagi in 1950’s for Tata Cancer Research Institute. Unfortunately

earlier Cag’s annual could not record this effort. Shivalkar redefined the same in 80’s with

the touch of aesthetics combined with scientific concepts. It is worth noting the same

appearing in this issue. This kind of healthy trend help enriched communication art from

old ideas.

Photographer Ajit Patel has contributed in the conception of this cover. Mr. Viru

Hiremath is trying to convey through this photo-imagery the concept of commercial

art business. This is a gradual transition of Photorealism from old hand crafted

illustrated concept. The copywriting continue to dominate in spite of the visual

vocabulary.

New trend of Photography became more universal. Textile industry continues

to give commercial art a creative inspiration. International Brands started

entering the communications art business because of the open market concept.

It was the beginning of new consumer market. All such things are visible in ads

showcased. The additions of new section show expansion of new media

application for creative brains. Art Director of the Year award was given to Mr. Viru

Hiremath,

(33) 1981- 82- Thirty-third annual:

The cover designed by Samir Khanzode is very

graphic. Red on Red color palette is unusual and

striking. The Chase game pattern is floating in mid

air and Cag’s prestigious trophy is placed on it. It

is a symbolic expression of communication arts

profession. This annual has mentioned Chief

Guest of the annual show Mrs. Simon Tata’s

thought in the Editorial which is a good eye

opener for the professionals. She is expressing

about how to stay well within budget cost.

Response of 1000 entries came for the annual

show Photography was dominating visual

element in overall work. It has been explored as

an expressive means than just technical shortcut.

Veteran like Arun Kolatkar gives yet another lovely campaign. Special Magazine Covers by Nana Shivalkar for Science Today of Times of India Publication is path breaking visual language of which Indian Communications Art is not exposed to like Western Visual Culture. Cag has encouraged this Scientific Visual Imagery for first time. Calendar Section is very rich showcasing interesting entries. This black & white issue gives the pleasure of color.

The cover designed by Mr. Viru Hiremath’s Team-work: Photography by Dayaram Chawada,Illustration by Prabhakar Warikar and art work by Chandrakant Venupure, M.S.Sawant. This a classic example of creative team and it works.

It is symbolically showing traditional grain grinding disk and the rainbow powder is spreading with beam of light coming through the center. The back cover shows same visual but the disk cooling down.

Page 27: CAG Annuals Research - Part 2

The back cover shows same visual but the disk cooling down. This a classic example of creative team works.

New Creative Talent Mr. Gopi Kukde who made

great impact on Indian Advertising Art for next

decade by his famous catch line of “Devils

Concept” is seen here in the earlier work.

Advertising Avenues founded by Mr.

Gopi Kukde and Ashok Roy and others

dominated this period. Overall trend of new

wave advertising communication is continued.

Black and White sometimes is good but few

suffer due to lack of color impact.

Art Director of the Year award winner

Viru Hiremath’s work is giving a fair idea of

70’s, 80’s communication arts trends which is

showcased.

(36) 1985-86-Thirty-sixth annual:

The Small booklet designed by young

dynamic Art Director Sunil Mahadik

has carried the most insightful speech by Chief Guest Mr.Brahm

He has given thoughts on future I.T. Industry and Global Graphic

(37) 1986-87- Thirty-seventh annual: Elsie Nanji designed this annual. It is different in look from the previous issues. She using Typographic approach using mixed type fonts letters to create the word “Annual 86.”37 figures are created out of vertical horizontal white line mesh against deep black background.

Page 34: CAG Annuals Research - Part 2

The inside pages of Media\Category application are also simple typographic

on black background. Mr.Brendan C. Pereira president in his note expresses

happiness about the improvement in the quality of typography, photography

and presentation. He states further that many in profession tend to criticize the Art

Schools as being designed oriented without a feeling for the aspects of marketing,

research, and concept testing etc. He draws the attention to the fact that it is these very

artist and designers who contribute the excellent quality of creative work that is seen in

this annual. There is no doubt that the artist and the copy-writer together team up

producing the text and the images that makes for excellent work and as this process

develops and is fostered we can only hope to see a still higher

standard of work in the years to come. Whilst the art school training may have its draw

backs, and whilst both clients and agencies personnel decry their shortcomings let us

who have the necessary know-how impart to our

colleagues in the creative area whatever knowledge we can, so that the shortcomings

they experience is made up in the training and

guidance they get at the agencies, studio, etc.

Page 35: CAG Annuals Research - Part 2

We must see a professional approach to the production of a piece of

communication and one hopes that it will get better each day, as it must, if the

quality of work has to improve from year to year, and the communicator must

justify his existence. The Art Director of the Year Elsie Nanji’s work is mix and

match of graphic illustration and photography A digital manipulation is the key

factor reflected. The Copywriter of the year Christopher Rosario is trendy and

perfectly explored by means of good typographic layout which emphasizes his

style of copywriting. Photographer of the Year is a new award instituted by

Enterprise Advertising in memory of the late Mitter Bedi. The award is given to

the best photography done in the section Press Advertising-Campaign and is

awarded to the photographer alone. This year Ajit Patel was chosen

Photographer of the Year. (38) 1987-Thirty-eighth annual:

Page 37: CAG Annuals Research - Part 2

The cover design by Art Director of the Year third time award winner Viru

Hiremath conceptualized a sculpture in plaster of Paris depicting a shape of

a pencil like a rocket about to take off in the space. This sculpture is

photographed in a futuristic lighting with the background of galaxy. The

letters CAG are illuminated like stars in the sky. The whole look is mystical.

This is the new digitally manipulated and combined with idea a new trend

started from 90’s. Art Director Shyam Samant, Designer Sunil Jakkal,

Photographer Ian Pereira, Processor Jasra Graphics and Printer Penrose

Printer are the team who helped realized the said cover design. Similarly

inside pages of Media/Category application are also design in a sequential

story telling manner using the main sculpture image with the creative

photographic application.

Page 38: CAG Annuals Research - Part 2

It is interesting to read the President’s address because revival of the

interest in the Cag is highlighted. This issue is showcasing the work of

Indian Advertising Art which is reflecting the new world of information

technology. Cag has also carried out a small booklet of award presentation

in which the speech of guest of honors Mr. Shashi Dash the founder of the

VIP luggage is interesting eye opener to read.

(39) 1987-88- Thirty-ninth annual: “We are particularly proud of this issue-as it’s our first attempt to go in full color reproduction by the offset process.” Mr.Brendan C. Pereira, president expressing his happiness in editorial. Elsie Nanji’s visual thinking is in tune with time.

Page 40: CAG Annuals Research - Part 2

As matter of fact in early 50’s block printing in color was an

art of printed work. Cag’s annuals of that time did show

this in beautiful color pages. This annual is important

because it is a transitional stage of Commercial art to

Communication Art. Artists like Avinash Godbole, Vikas

Gaitonde, Nalesh Patil, Gangadharan Menon, Sunil

Mahadik, Preeti Vyas Gianetti, Elsie Nanji, Gopi Kukde,

Ashok Roy and many new creative talents emerged on this

changed platform of Indian Advertising Art.

Elsie Nanji was chosen

“The Art Director of the Year” who is supposed to design the annual. She visualized

the concept by means of photography. The Cover is in dark black background and

the dramatic low key lighting image of tungsten bulb is connected by thick red wire.

Flash stroke is encircling the bulb and creating the letters of Cag Award which is

articulated by glowing strokes.

Page 41: CAG Annuals Research - Part 2

The right hand bottom corner is typographically composing the text of

“Commercial Artist Guild 1988”in tiny light weight Cable Type font. Let us try

and see this visual as against the Cover Design of Mr. Bhai Patki of 1963 Cag’s

annual where he has innovatively explored the creative application of

photography combined with printing four color separation methodologies. It

is a perfect marriage of art and technology which is a pioneering approach at

that time. We can study this transition of concept of Art happening just by

recollection of ideas. Elsie Nanji’s visual thinking is in tune with time. She

gives the credits to her team e.g. Artist: Chanrakant Rasal, Babu Jyotindra

Paralkar, Vikas Kamtekar, and Photographer: Ajit Patel, Typesetting:

Fotocomp, Processing: Jasara Graphics, Printing: Penrose. This is practice of

today’s team- work culture. Lintas Advertising were perhaps first to inculcate

the concept of team work.

Page 42: CAG Annuals Research - Part 2

Creative Art Director Mr.Madhu Gadkari use to take the institutes to organize

the annual show of their Artist’s individual Art Work Group Shows in City’s

famous Art Galleries. Earlier it was not known who is contributing what?

Commercial Artist was supposed to do everything required for executing the

final idea. Today it is considered luxury due to fast trend of business practice.

Modern ideas did positive contributions but when this color issue is lacking

good illustrations and hand drawn lettering we feel looser on some points.

Display Design and Exhibition Design is good section. Designer of the Year

award for first time was given to Prakash Powle. Media/Category application: Press Campaign color, Press Campaign B&W,

This annual showcases the face of new Indian Advertising Art. You will notice

the earlier name Commercial Art is redefined in Communication Arts Guild.

The need for change was felt to redefine the name because it encompasses

multi disciplines of communication science combined with art. Indian Republic

entered free global market world from 1990’s and every old idea of business

had to redefine. Media/Category application: Press Campaign color,

(44) 1993-94 Forty fourth annual: A very simple cover with just black background and two strong strips in the top. Top one is Red strip with reverse lettering (white) of Communication Arts Guild bellow it a Yellow strip with black lettering of Annual 1993.The President’s Speech is very touchy. Apple Computers came forward to present ‘The President’s Speech’ in multimedia. It was promotional attempt. For the first time a competition for the ‘call for entries’ poster design was held and response was good.

The concept of The Cag Cricket also was successful. The idea was to extend the participation between the Agencies and get connected with profession, process houses, design and research, printers and publishers. A page for an apology is sad to read. Second Designer of year was Shabnam Kashyap Sirur. Work is interesting. Alok Nanda was chosen Copy Writer of The Year. It’s treat to see the typography combined with literature. Colour and slick design printed on Art paper of annual looks international.
