Growing up on a lake in rural Minnesota, I spent most

of my childhood subconsciously discovering the joys

of creative expression by building whimsical stick

structures in my backyard. Ranging from elf-sized to

child-sized, the structures precariously scaled the

trunks of any tree which struck my fancy and became

the backdrop for hours of exploration.

This need to express my imagination in a tangible way

continued to grow as I experimented with watercolor

and oil paint, tested my voice performing poetry, found

catharsis in learning to cook (although I had less luck

with my baking attempts), and explored the intricacy of

playing and listening to jazz music.

It wasn’t until mid-way through my teens that I found

an outlet as versatile as it was challenging; something

I knew would hold my attention for as long as I felt

the need to turn abstract ideas into reality. Interior

Architecture allows my work to flow seamlessly from

intimate human scales into designs encompassing

the full built environment. Seeing these designs

realized and the effects they have on others gives me

satisfaction beyond anything I can provide for myself

as an individual, and is the reason I have chosen to

pursue spatial design as my profession.

IAThe Manhattan Wellness Center in Manhattan,

Kansas was designed with the intention of

creating a healing center for veterans suffering

from military PTSD. The center contains three

levels of treatment ranging from community and

social integration, career and workplace re-entry

programs, and mind-body medicine in order to

approach healing in a holistic, non-sterile way.

The primary design concept, layers of recovery,

dictated the programmatic layout as well as

aesthetic direction. Users move through their

recovery from spaces with high community

focus to those with high individual focus.

The excerpt below from Hermann Hesse’s Trees:

Reflections and Poems, was used as a poetic

concept throughout the project.

FALL 2013ELEVATE OFFICE

Elevate is a digital media company located

in Seattle, Washington. The office space is

designed to provide a flexible, open-office work

environment for a company which hosts a variety

of clients from Toyota to Oreo, each seeking

services ranging from branding to marketing to

art direction. The building functions not only as

a work environment, but also as a space to hold

functions and digitally market to the city through

the use of exterior LED pixel super-graphic

screens.

Employees of the office are given multiple types

of spaces to work in to better aid themselves and

their clients. Options range from highly private

individual work stations to a “flex zone” with

movable media walls and furniture, facilitating all

types of collaboration and innovation.

SPRING 2012

The Spice of Life’s flagship store is located in the

luxury shopping district of Boulder, Colorado.

It’s intention is to make gourmet cooking an

accessible and exploratory experience by

providing a retail space which enables maximum

ease of store navigation, user control over

sizing and pricing of seasonings purchased,

educational and informative placards with recipe

tips and pairings, and samples of the seasonings

being sold when used in different dishes.

A LEED Silver certified space, the retailers take

sustainability to the next level by encouraging

customers to return empty containers for

sanitation and reuse, receiving a discount on

their next purchase in doing so.

IA IN PROGRESS THESISFALL 2014 - SPRING 2015

The past one hundred years have shown

suburban growth out-pacing urban, but as the

millennial generation enters the housing market,

they are showing a renewed interest in moving

back to urban areas. However, as demand

increases, the price and rarity of urban homes

increases immensely as well, forcing buyers to

choose between burdening themselves with

debt or living in suburban sprawl, which can be

considered responsible for adverse effects such

as environmental degradation, lack of community,

and health risks. Tiny houses provide a solution

to this problem, providing sustainable urban infill

by:

increasing the densification of cities and

slowing detrimental suburban expansion by

infilling underutilized spaces

creating an alternative to traditional city housing

marketed specifically towards environmentally

conscious buyers

providing a cost-effective solution to inflated

housing markets found in cities suffering from

high population increases

fulfilling a deeper socio-psychological need

to control the physical environment while

providing the framework to break free from

consumerist ideals

Helio.hydration is a dual-functioning, solar-

powered canteen lamp perfect for any industrious

explorer looking to lighten their load by combining

two of the most essential elements of a good

adventure: water and light.

During the day, the “papa pack” and “petite pack”

can be used individually as water canteens. As

you hike, the “papa pack” charges through use

of thin solar cells on the underside of the pack.

When the two packs are placed on top of each

other, an electric current is sent from the solar

cells to tiny LEDs housed within the “petite pack”,

shining light through the water and out the top

of the canteen. An ambient glow is thus created,

akin to a modern campfire.

Meta.morph is small, flat-pack coffee table

designed to fit into a standard UPS ground

shipping container. The design concept is based

upon principles of origami, specifically the

creases found when unfolding a paper airplane.

In keeping true to fundamentals of the art, the

table can be unfolded into one single piece

proportionally identical to an a4 sheet of paper.

The table was designed to be manufactured

primarily with a CNC, in order to ease mass

production, although it could easily be duplicated

by hand as well.

Taking inspiration from the iconic Bow-back

Windsors of the 18th century, the re-imagined

Windsor Lounge is designed to utilize innovative

digital fabrication techniques of the time, fitting in

to a modern lifestyle which celebrates relaxation

and luxury. Beginning as a conceptual project in

the Fall of 2013, the project was revisited a year

later and taken from concept to reality.

Constructed of CNC-milled baltic birch ply and

finished with a coat of high-gloss white paint, the

body of the chair houses 3D printed form-work

that ensures the fiberglass spindles are placed

with maximum precision. This allows for optimal

strength, comfort, and back support unique to

each user. The chair is available in both wood

and aluminum construction.
