Clough Amec has been a very supportive company for their employees and I expect that 2014 will be the same. Once again, Safety will be one of the priorities in the work place. I also wish to have good health to keep providing a better life to my family.

I’m very lucky to work with CAJV. The environment in the Office is very friendly. I’ve been here since last November and I’ve already had the chance to go to Darwin twice for the Excel training. Hopefully, 2014 will be full of great professional experience that will be important for my future.

I hope to keep improving my skills and continue working with CAJV. I feel happy with the job because it’s been a great experience in my life. Being part of Bayu-Undan “family” makes me believe that I also contribute for the development of Timor-Leste.

I've been working for CA for two years in March. I feel I have learnt lots about my role and I have met and worked with some interesting personalities on this journey. I also had the chance to meet the Culture and people of East Timor - I have enjoyed every visit and met some great people. I hope this year sees me become more proficient in my role and provides me the same diverse experiences and as many new friends.

I wish that everyone in Bayu-Undan has a great year, always puts Safety first in the work place. I hope my performance in the next eleven months will be very positive. If it’s possible, I would like to have more training to improve my skills.

“Timor-Leste has natural resources, only needs to be a more organized society

and have better human resources” Jacinta Maria Basmery Reis Araújo was born in Dili and graduated with a Bachelor degree in Economic Accounting at Duta Wacana Christian University in Yogyakarta (Indonesia). She has been working as CAJV contractor since 2008. Find more about her experience running the CAJV Dili Office in this article. By C.A. (19.02.2014)

When you started the CAJV Dili Office Onshore only had three people. Nowadays there are 14 employees working. What are the reasons behind this accomplishment? First of all, I am very happy with this accomplishment and it shows that the company believes and trusts that Timorese are capable to deal with tasks related with this Industry. Through this increased trust more Timorese have been allocated to perform the increased tasks as required.

What are the priorities that CAJV Dili Office want to achieve in 2014? To keep up the good performance from last year and to build more knowledge amongst the team members sharing lessons learnt from previous training and experiences. Improving the current systems, processes and performing more complex tasks. Last year the CAJV contractor employees had many programs related with training. How have the trainings sponsored by ConocoPhillips affected the Dili office staff? The outcomes of all the trainings have shown great improvements in different areas. Training is an opportunity to learn and develop skills; I have observed that Dili Office is more confident using excels features and solving problems. Attending English classes has helped Dili Office to improve their communication with the other CAJV offices and with crew staying at Timor Lodge. The communication in the office is better and English is part of our day to day routine. Safety is our priority and having training related to Safety gave us awareness for our workplace and homes. In your speech on the Celebration of Training event [see page 6] you emphasize “the power of the people” is vital for any company to grow. What should a company do so that employees feel motivated and consequently give their best? Companies should aim to encourage their employees where possible. Companies can support employees by providing opportunities for training, a safe working environment, appropriate equipment and career progression. What are the important things that you consider to be an essential for someone who wishes to work with CAJV Dili Office? The individual needs to be interested in learning the required skills and to be flexible to meet the demands of the role.

Clough Amec and Caltech organized the 1st Dili Energy Futsal Tournament in 2013. How successful was the event?

It was very successful event in building good relations between companies related to Oil & Gas Industry and also promoting CAJV and Caltech in Timor-Leste. Furthermore, it was also a chance for the companies to contribute for the Timorese community as all the prizes were donated for Charity.

Recently you attended an intensive course about leadership (Certificate IV Frontline Management) in Perth. How do you apply the skills obtain from this training in your office?

I have implemented some of the strategies I learnt in the Frontline Management course. I have organized periodic staff meetings, which are held using English, to discuss current tasks and opportunities for improvement. I have appointed a fire warden and also implemented an evacuation plan. CELEBRATION of Training speech with Taryn Hicks What are your short-term and long-term career aspirations?

My short-term goal is to improve my leadership skills by attending additional training. My long-term goal is to work outside Timor-Leste and have exposure to new systems and management practices. I have been attending on the job training in Darwin in the last few years and I really enjoy challenging myself with new knowledge and responsibilities.

Do you see a bright future for Timor-Leste with the development of the natural resources? Why?

Yes, as Timorese citizen I have big hopes that our nation will improve and become an example for the International community. We have natural resources, now we only need to be a more organized society and have better human resources.

2013 Training Celebration 2013 was a very special year for all the CAJV contractor employees that had the chance to be part of many trainings sponsored by ConocoPhillips. For this reason, Taryn Hicks, the Timor-Leste Capacity Development Coordinator, organized a Celebration of Training where all staff from CAJV in Dili was invited along with their families. The event was participated by special visitors from Perth and Darwin CAJV Offices (Ivor Ferguson, Lynsey Bills, Phil Whitnell, Peter Cook) and also representatives from ConocoPhillips and Caltech. Apply First Aid in your life By Neuza Sek (12.02.2014)

First Aid is the initial care or assistance provided to a sick or injured person who needs professional medical attention. First Aid is very significant for all people and not only for those that work in the Office. From the training we can deal with many emergency situations that in some cases can mean saving the life of someone. During the intensive Apply First Aid Training that 12 CAJV contractor employees attended in two days, we had the chance to increase our knowledge in regards to different subjects. Introduction To First Aid, Work Health & Safety, How to Treat The Victim or Basic Life Support were some of the topics that we learnt from the training. Knowing more about the Human Anatomy (Nervous, Cardiovascular or Respiratory System) was also very interesting. We often hear about some parts inside of our body and it’s always good to know exactly what their functions are. In each day, after knowing about the theories the participants were given the chance to practice in the field. That moment was definitely the most important part of the training. For example, we learnt how to handle casualties with different kind of injuries/traumas. Applying the Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) was one of the most excited exercises, knowing this skill is very crucial when dealing with tough situation where CPR is required. In conclusion, knowing that Safety is an essential key for all who work in Oil & Gas industry, being able to have the First Aid Training is extremely important. Last but not least, CAJV Dili Office would like to give a special gratitude for Jenny Norton, the instructor provided by ISAT (Industry Safety Assessment and Training). The training was interesting and vigorous. Thanks to her clarity & willingness in educating us to be a good first aider. Stories of Timorese Struggles By Akta Kaushal (University of Hawai’i – The Center for Southeast Asian Studies, 28.01.2014)

Beloved Land: Stories, Struggles, and Secrets from Timor-Leste by Gordon Peake Published by Scribe Publications Pty Ltd., 2013 Beloved Land picks up the story where world attention left off. Blending narrative history, travelogue, and personal reminiscences based on four years of living in the country, it shows the daunting hurdles that the people of Timor-Leste must overcome to build a nation from scratch, and how much the international community has to learn if it is to help rather than hinder the process. In Timor-Leste, “small” does not necessarily mean “simple.” Beloved Land shows that the story of Timor-Leste as much more than the narrow litany of conflict and violence often presented in the media. The Crossing: A Story of East Timor by Luis Cardoso Published by Granta, UK, 2002 East Timor hit the world’s newspaper headlines in August 1999 after its bloody, brave vote for independence from Indonesia—one of the great expressions of a people’s democratic spirit. Luis Cardoso’s beautifully lyrical memoir of growing up in East Timor portrays a people and a culture struggling to form their own identity under successive waves of colonialism. Exquisitely crafted and evocative, Luis Cardoso’s personal history of his homeland takes as its central image a crossing—from child to adult, Portuguese to Timorese, tolerance to repression, colonialism to independence. The Redundancy of Courage by Timothy Mo Published by Paddleless Press, 2002 In The Redundancy of Courage, East Timor becomes the fictitious country of Danu. Fretilin, the East Timorese guerrilla resistance movement, becomes FAKINTIL and the Indonesians become the malais. Although the characters are fictional, they are closely based on people involved in events in East Timor during 1975. During this time, this tiny society threw up various ordinary people who were asked to do extraordinary things and delivered. The narrator of The Redundancy of Courage is not one of these heroes. Adolph Ng is one of life’s cowards. A homosexual educated at a Canadian university, he returns to his homeland and opens one of the only hotels on the island. He is resented by his countrymen because he is of Chinese origin, and he is apolitical until he is swept into the resistance movement by accident. CAJV contractor employee describes his experience working at Bayu-Undan.

My experience working as Bridge Controller has been fantastic for several

reasons.

Firstly, living at Bayu-Undan platform was something that I could only imagine

until I landed there and felt its cool environment for the first time. People are

friendly, the place is also equipped with some very good leisure facilities such as

gym, cinema, snooker and equipments for table tennis. The food is great and the

accommodation is very reasonable. It’s also important being able to use the

phone and get Internet access for free.

Secondly, meeting people from different countries and different cultures is one of

the reasons that makes Bayu-Undan a special place to work. The interaction

between people from many nations is a good opportunity to let others know

more about Timor-Leste traditions and history.

Thirdly, the most essential thing at the platform is Safety. It’s good to know that

everyone follow the rules & respects a Safety environment.

Nevertheless, sometimes it’s not easy to be away from my family, mainly my wife

and my daughter, “little princess” Ussinay, for four weeks. But I can compensate

the time I spend Offshore with the same amount of time when I return from each

swing.

To sum up, it’s a privilege to work for ConocoPhillips through CAJV and Caltech.
