mETAL

Even for derecktor, a yard known worldwide

for it’s superlative metal work, Cakewalk

takes, well, the cake. Steel hull, aluminum

superstructure and more custom stainless

than most yards create in a lifetime – it all

upholds not only the yards reputation but the

lofty standards of the yacht herself.

CURVES, CURVES, CURVES

Far from large and linear, Cakewalk contains

more curves than a mountain road. Anyone

who knows metal knows what a challenge

they present to everyone involved. A challenge

handled with sinuous expertise by the people

at derecktor.

nEARInG THE FInISH

When it comes to fairing a yacht prior to

painting, less is less, and the more less the

better. on Cakewalk, with the raw metal

structures extremely fair to begin with, a

minimal amount of fairing is needed. This

saves weight, saves time, and saves money.

CAP IT oFF

Cakewalk’s cap rail is something of a work

of art in itself. Just finding the teak was an

adventure-ourjoinerymanagermadeseveral

trips to the Philippines to locate and select

pieces of Burmese teak large and beautiful

enough to make the grade. Forming, shaping,

fitting and finishing all took the sort of skills

not easily found in today’s world. Fortunately,

they are readily found at derecktor.

UndER THE SURFACE

Beyond her sheer size, behind her

overwhelming grandeur, Cakewalk is a true

technical marvel. miles of cable, piles of pipe

and many tons of machinery all work behind

the scenes to bring her alive and put her in

motion. It’s here, where it can’t be easily seen,

that some of our best work has gone. It’s here

Tim worked with the firm for over 20 years. A graduate of delft University of Technology in The netherlands, where he earned a master degree in naval Architecture, Hugo maurits van Wieringen began his career in 1985 as a research engineer at ICH Holland, a research institute for the dredging vesselindustry.HejoinedDeVoogtNavalArchitects,providing design and engineering for Feadship, in 1986. In 1993, Hugo became managing director and

owner of de Voogt. After selling the office to Feadship in 2001 and staying on to train his successors, in 2003 he formed Azure naval Architects in Haarlem, TheNetherlands,ajointventurewithco-founderDiederikvanderHoek.NotablerecentAzureprojectsinclude the award-winning 82m oceanco Alfa Nero. Hugo is president of the netherlands Society of Yacht designers and naval Architects (nBJA).

A graduate of miami University, oxford, ohio, Liz dalton started her interior design business, dalton designs Inc., in 1985. Early on, she enhanced her skill set with hands-on experience refitting numerous production boats and designing new-construction custom yacht interiors. dalton designs, Inc. has received a number of awards, including ShowBoats International’s “Best Refit,1997” for the 142ft Cakewalk (Feadship) and “Best Full displacement Yacht over 38 meters, 2001” for the 204ft Cakewalk (Feadship), as well as the International Superyacht Award for “Best Power 43 meters and up” in 2000. Liz is a professional member of the American Society of Interior designers (ASId) and is licensed (#1459) in the state of Florida. dalton designs, Inc., is headquartered in a 6,000sq ft custom showroom in north Palm Beach.

Captain Bill Zinser has been boating all of his life. Growing up on the Connecticut shore, Bill’s grandfathers both were involved in the boating industry. His official yachting career began in 1971, as First mate. He became a Captain in 1978, taking the helm of a variety of motor yachts throughout the world, including busy charter vessels. In 1995, Bill supervised the third Cakewalk, a Feadship motor yacht, through a highly successful, award-winning, 18-month refit, then spent two years cruising the Caribbean and mediterranean. Construction of the next award-winning Cakewalk motor yacht began in march 1998 and was completed in the summer of 2000. After her launch, he logged over 100,000 nautical miles in her before her sale in 2004, at which time planning began forthecurrentCAKEWALKproject.
