Virtualization technology is a way of making one physical computer function as if it were two or more computers

Today’s computers are so much more powerful that even just a few years ago that many machines are underutilized

Page 6: Cal Net Tech Open House: Virtualization and Windows 7 Tips & Tricks

• Maximize hardware• Simplify test and development environments• Quickly respond to business needs• Improved system availability and business continuity• Reduce power needs• Reduce cooling costs• Overall Cost savings

By running multiple operating systems on a single computer

• Increase utilization of existing hardware from 5% - 15% up to 80%• Reduce hardware requirements by a much as 10:1 ratio• Energy consumption can be reduced by as much as 80%

Have you ever wanted to have a copy or copies of your production systems for testing?

Cal Net Example: 4 accounting servers into 1.

In summary, virtual environments are easy to make isolated copies of systems for testing

Install new servers and applications in days not weeks or months

• In the past getting a new piece of software often meant new server hardware • Lead time to get equipment and time to install it

With virtualization in place new servers can be installed on existing server hardware on demand

Virtual Machines free the server Operating System from hardware dependency

• Because virtual machines are not dependant on any particular hardware, and they can be moved easily to another computer

• Backups are easy too because Virtual Machines are just a few files • Backups of Virtual Machines can be taken offsite and recovered anywhere in the

case of an emergency• Snapshots or point in time pictures of virtual machines allow easier recovery

from all kinds of issues

In the before picture you have several servers not working all that hard but each is consuming electricity

In the after example one server is powering all three servers workloads but consuming the electricity of just one machine

Have heat issues in your computer/server room?

Heat is the #1 killer of electronic equipment, reducing its lifespan and causing outages

With less servers, cooling needs are reduced.

• Buy less hardware• Pay less in warranty renewals because you have

less equipment• Less equipment to manage• Future hardware refreshes reduce labor because

you are just copying files (VM servers) instead of reinstalling them

• When software is updated reinstallation will be required

• Three months following the release of Windows 7, out of 923 IT Professionals at large organizations surveyed, 88% said that they had plans on migrating.

• 46% DO NOT plan on waiting for the release of Service Pack

• This is a HUGE change over Windows Vista, and Microsoft has done a great job alleviating their “Black Eye” they got from Vista.
