Dear Parents, It’s hard to believe that we are already in the month of October. You know that means holiday season is quickly approaching. What a busy time of the year! And with that comes lots of activities and excitement at our school. We have lots on our agenda and more to come. Not included in the Dat es to R e me mbe r are many field trips. Field trips are an exciting alternative to the traditional school day, but we must keep in mind that even though students are away from the physical school building, it is still an instructional day. On many field trips, we ask parents to go along to be chaperones. Chaperones are used in a number of ways: to help supervise children on the buses, to help supervise groups of children during the “event,” to help supervise groups going to the restrooms, and to help take care of children in need. In other words, chaperones play a big part in helping the teachers take care of children. We need all hands on board! Therefore, if you and your child’s teacher arrange for you to be a chaperone, you, too, must follow some rules. 1. We ask that you help to chaperone on the buses, as well as the field trip activities. 2. Please remember that we arrange field trips to accommodate only a certain number of students, staff members and chaperones. No othe r family me mbe r s may att e nd. 3. Keep in mind this is an instru c tional day and expectations are the same as if the students are in school. Students must follow both school and classroom expectations. 4. We also ask that there is no smoking in front of or near our students. 5. And one last thing, have a great time with your child! We thank you all for your help and for supporting our programs here at Caleb’s Creek. Just a few reminders: Once again, we do not have adult supervision in the cafeteria before 8:15. We ask that you do not drop your children off before this time unless they are participating in the before school program with the YMCA. If you are interested in finding out more about the before school program with the Y, we’ll be glad to give you that information. Just give us a call. Please remember to help keep our instructional time sacred. We ask that no one interrupt the classes while teaching is going on. If you would like to visit the classrooms for about 45 minutes or so, (and you are more than welcome to do so), make sure you have worked out your visitation with your child’s teacher and your visit has been pre-approved through the office. Instructional time is precious for your child. We will do whatever we need to do to protect it. Periodically, you will (should) receive a recorded phone message from our school. This is another way we hope to keep you better informed. After 9:00, all doors to our building are locked for the safety of your child. If you need to enter our building, we will have one door unlocked at the front office. You must come t o t he offi ce and sign in t o ge t a vi si t ors badge . If you arrive at school prior to the time the bell rings, please wait in the cafeteria. Also, please remember to wait outside in the afternoons if you are picking up your child. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to give us a call. Dear Parents,

It’s hard to believe that we are already in the month of October. You know that means holiday season is quickly approaching. What a busy time of the year! And with that comes lots of activities and excitement at our school.

We have lots on our agenda and more to come. Not included in the Dates to Remember are many field trips.

2. Please remember that we arrange field trips to accommodate only a certain number of

students, staff members and chaperones. No other family members may attend. 3. Keep in mind this is an instructional day and expectations are the same as if the students

are in school.

You must come to the office and sign in to get a visitors badge.

If you arrive at school prior to the time the bell rings, please wait in the cafeteria. Also, please remember to wait outside in the afternoons if you are picking up your child.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to give us a call.

Happy 1st Month of School Crocs! I am always humbled by the volunteer response and the willingness of parents and grandparents to jump in and make those "Mountains into Mole hills". Caleb's Creek Elementary can't do it without you! We have turned in our Major Fundraiser and have raised a profit of about $16000 to start our school year with. If you didn't have a chance to participate in the Fundraiser sales but would like to make a direct donation to the PTA we welcome that (as we are about $6000.00 below our projected goal) and you will be provided with a tax receipt . We have many things we want to be able to do to enhance your child's school experience and to partner with the teachers and staff to give them the tools that they need to be successful in the classroom. We will be assisting Mrs. Oglesby to purchase the Stars Reading Program to be used to assess reading and comprehension. The PTA is also helping the grade levels to get home readers, listening centers, and other necessary resources. We are going to enhance the blacktop playground with another basketball goal, soccer goals, large jump ropes, and equipment for all teachers to have access to. We will be installing a path from the sidewalk over to our playground so that our kids can get out to the play area even if its been raining. There are more needs then we could ever dream to purchase but our goals for 2010-2011 are to make sure that we are giving our staff and students the items that will make school continue to be an effective place of learning and fun. There are some wonderful events coming up at Caleb's Creek this Fall. Fall Book Fair is November 1-9th. Our 1st Family Fun Night is Friday November 5th. It is going to be "Space Night" here at Caleb's Creek and a wonderful way to spend time together and experience some really cool things with your kids. Some quick reminders: Keep sending in those Box tops, Campbell labels, and Tyson food labels. Link your VIC Card, MVP Card, and Target RED Card to Caleb's Creek. Enjoy our Creek Nights at Chic fila, Cici's, and Skateworld. Join OUR PTA. Become a Volunteer and Make a Difference. Encourage Your Child to Do a Reflection Entry (more info is on our PTA Web site) it's a great way for them to express their creative side. Proud to Be A Croc Mom, Angie Byrd, PTA President

A Big Thank you for everyone who participated in the Fundraiser! It was a huge success. Our total sales were $36,000 which translates to $18,000 for our school!!! How super is that! Also I'd like to congratulate Sierra Caperton in Mrs. Smith's 4th grade class. Sierra sold 200 items!! She is our schools top seller and will win a $50 Target gift card plus all the fun prizes from Great Western Reserve. We had 36 students sell over $200 in merchandise and they will be entered into a drawing for another $50 gift card. Our top 10 sellers are as follows:

Sierra Caperton(Smith) $1803.00 Skylar Vickery(Vaught) $540.50 Austin Duncan(Hall) $492.00 Brooklyn Watson(Horton) $477.50 Jade Rice(Lofton) $469.00 Jon Davis(Kidd) $388.50 Davyn Reid(Pegram) $381.00 Cole Khemlani(Lofton) $373.50 Christiana Barrett(Skolaris) $341.50 Fallon Livesay(E. Lee) $340.50

Thanks again for all your hard work!! Allison Teague VP of Fundraising

Does your child enjoy dance, music, or writing? Does he or she like to draw, take pictures, or make videos? If so, please encourage him or her to create an entry for this year's Reflections contest. Each year, the PTA Reflections Program challenges students to create art inspired by a specific theme. The 2010–2011 Reflections theme is “Together we can…” The program has six arts areas—dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, and visual arts. Entries will be due to the office at school on Friday, November 5th. For more information please check out the PTA portion of the Caleb's Creek website or fill out and return the interest form included in the Wednesday folders.

INGREDIENTS

2 1/2 cups allpurpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened 1 1/2 cups sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 1/2 cups chopped Heath Bar pieces (Eight 1.4 ounce bars)

1/2 cup chopped walnuts

1. Sift together the flour, salt, and baking soda. Set

aside. In a separate bowl, combine Heath Bar

pieces and chopped walnuts. Set aside.

2. Beat together the butter and sugar. Beat in eggs

one at a time, and vanilla.

3. Alternatively mix in the Heath Bar mixture and the

flour mixture, a third at a time, until well blended.

Chill cookie dough for at least 30 minutes

(better an hour).

4. Preheat oven to 350°F. On cookie sheets lined with

parchment paper or Silpat, spoon out the cookie

dough in small 1inch diameter balls (size of a

large marble). Place dough balls 3 inches away

from each other on the cookie sheets. (Make sure

there is plenty of room between the cookie balls,

and that the cookie balls aren't too big. These

cookies spread!)

5. Bake for 1012 minutes, until the edges are just

starting to brown. Remove from oven and let cool

for a few minutes. Then transfer the cookies to a

wire rack to cool completely.

6. Makes about 6 dozen cookies.

Hints from Hospitality It’s that time of year! The temperature is dropping, the leaves are beginning to show signs of changing color and the fall harvest will soon be underway. One of the best things about the arrival of fall is the abundance of great recipes that include the traditional tastes and smells of the season. When the weather starts to change, Abbey Harrington, from Ms. Wessell’s 6th Grade class loves to prepare her Grandmother’s special twist on the standard apple pie. This month spend some time in the kitchen and try Abbey’s family favorite and this month’s recipe:

SOUR CREAM APPLE PIE

Ingredients 3/4 c. sugar 2 tbsp. Sour cream 2 tbsp. flour 1 egg (well beaten) 1/2 tsp. vanilla 1 can apple pie filling 1/4 tsp. salt Deep dish pie shell TOPPING 1/3 c. flour 1/3 c. brown sugar 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 stick butter (softened) Preheat oven to 450°. In a large mixing bowl, cut the apples into smaller pieces. Sift together the flour, sugar and salt and add to the apples. Add sour cream, egg and vanilla and mix until smooth. Place mixture in pie shell and bake for 15 minutes. Lower the oven temperature to 350° and bake for 30 minutes. While the pie is baking, mix topping ingredients and form into balls. Place topping mixture on top of the pie and bake for 5 minutes to soften. Spread topping over pie and bake for an additional 10 minutes. Serve with Cool Whip.

CROCS: GO GREEN & TERRACYCLE!

You recently received information about Terracycling, the “upcycling” program where the students at Caleb’s Creek collect different items that are mailed to a company that gives our school 2 cents per item. Collection sites are in the cafeteria and at the base of the stairs near the school store. You may also send in any items you save at home through your child’s teacher. Help us raise money and keep these items out of the landfill by emptying and saving the following products:

1. Capri Sun, KoolAid, Honest Kids juice pouches 2. FritoLay chip bags 3. Nabisco & Keebler cookie wrappers/bags 4. M&Ms, Mar’s, Wrigley’s, Cadbury candy wrappers 5. Elmer’s Glue Sticks & bottles 6. Ziploc plastic bags, containers, & the boxes they come in
