CHRISTMAS IN JULY – FOOD PANTRY FOOD DRIVE: Many of the families we serve rely on our schools to feed their children two meals a day. Children go hungry every day during the summer months. We will have a “Christmas in July Food Drive.” Please bring in extra food for our Food Pantry so that we can help feed the hungry of our community. We cannot do this without your generous support.

Freedom: A well-rounded school gives students freedom to recognize their capabilities and individual potentials. Something as little as putting toys away to helping set the placements for snack time can build good character that will last a lifetime. At the Day School, we foster an atmosphere where thinking, questioning, and imagining are encouraged while enhancing understanding, empathy, and communication skills. Preschool is your students’ introduction into the education system; while it is fun and engaging for the children it is an important responsibility for both parents and teachers.Holy Family Day School accepts students age 2 1/2 (toilet trained) through Kindergarten. With Freedom comes knowledge, and with knowledge comes understanding. We will work to engage your children in a warm, caring, structured environment to help them understand how important they are in the world.

Do You Know What Your Elementary School Student is Doing After School? Holy Family Day School has a great program limited to 20 students for after school care. Students attending John B. Dey, Trantwood, or Alanton Elementary school may ride a VBCPS bus to Holy Family. The program is structured to include playground time, snack time, homework time, centers, and other activities.

School Information: If you have any questions or would like to take a tour of our school, please call 481-1180. Helpful information can be found on our website at www.holyfamilydayschool.org.

Summer Fun: We wish all our students (past and present), their families, and all who are reading this bulletin, a very safe and happy summer. During the summer, the Day School Office hours are somewhat varied. If you wish to contact Cindy Girard or Laurie Powers to set up an appointment, drop off paperwork, or have any questions at all, please call or email the school.

Box Tops For Education: Box Top collection is a year-round program and we are so pleased with the excellent response to this fund raiser for the school. The box outside the welcome office is the place to drop off your collection.

The Gospel – it really is important!Cardinal Avery Dulles pointed out, “A simple word count indicates the profound shift in focus. Vatican I, which met from 1869-1870, used the term gospel (evangelium) only once and never used the terms evangelize and evangelization. Less than a century later, Vatican II mentioned the gospel 157 times and used the verb evangelize eighteen times and the noun evangelization thirty-one times. When it spoke of evangelization, Vatican II generally meant the proclamation of the basic Christian message of salvation through Jesus Christ.”

“CARE FOR OUR EARTH”Probably, the simplest way to combat global warming, reduce water consumption, and save the rainforests (which amount to being a responsible steward of our Earth) is adopting (to some extent) a plant-based diet. The immense amount of water required to raise animals and their feed-crops is depleting a vital resource – water. Also, livestock production is responsible for 70% of the deforestation in the Amazon region where rainforests are being cleared to create new pastures and crop production. The raising of cows, pigs, and chickens in factories generates enormous amounts of greenhouse gases that are filling our atmosphere. We can help preserve our planet one forkful at a time by going meat-free (a big change of lifestyle!), at least 1 or 2 days a week if not more. You would be surprised as I, a former avid meat-eater, was to discover how many delicious and healthy meatless meals there are!

MANY THANKS TO OUR FAMILY COMMUNITY for the prayers, concern, and visits during my month-long surgical and rehab experience during the month of June. I am especially grateful for the pastoral visits by Paul Schellhammer, Jim Fedor, Betty Swap, the McCarthys, Gloria Connor, Mary Moran, and Marge Sullivan. A vivid example of the meaning of our “holy family” community.

Laudato Si’: On Care For Our Common Home

“Praise be to you, my Lord.”

“LAUDATO SI’, mi’ Signore” – “Praise be to you, my Lord.” These are the words that open Pope Francis’

encyclical on ecology and care for God’s creation. These words, quoting St. Francis of Assisi’s beautiful canticle, remind us that our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us.

Pope Francis addresses Laudato Si’ to “every person on the planet,” for we all share a common home—the earth. He focuses on a number of important themes.

A Moral and Spiritual Challenge. The ecological crisis, Pope Francis writes, is a summons to profound interior conversion—to renew our relationships with God, one another, and the created world.

Care for God’s Creation. God created the world and entrusted it to us as a gift. Now we have the responsibility to care for and protect it and all people, who are part of creation. Protecting human dignity is strongly linked to care for creation.

We are All Connected. We are connected to the rest of the human family, to the created world, and to those who will come after us in future generations.

Impact on the Poor. People in poverty have contributed least to climate change, yet they are disproportionately impacted by it. As a result of excessive use of natural resource by wealthy nations, those who are poor experience pollution, lack of access to clean water, hunger, and more.

Called to Solidarity. We are one human family and have a shared responsibility for others and for creation. Wealthy countries have a responsibility to reduce consumption of non-renewal resources and should help poorer nations develop in sustainable ways.

Technological and economic development must serve human beings and enhance human dignity, instead of creating an economy of exclusion, so that all people have access to what is needed for authentic human development.

Supporting Life, Protecting Creation. Concern for nature is incompatible with failure to protect vulnerable human beings, such as unborn children, people with disabilities, or victims of human trafficking.

A Time to Act. Pope Francis calls for a change in lifestyle and consumption. We can make important changes as individuals, families, and communities, and as civil and political leaders.

Hope and Joy. “Injustice is not invincible” (no. 74) and we act knowing that we seek to live out God’s vision of renewed relationships with God, ourselves, one another, and creation.

How You Can Respond

Each of us are called to take concrete steps – from reducing consumption to working for political change – to better care for creation. Here are some ideas.

1. Become more aware of our connectedness. Care for one another and creation includes understanding that “everything is connected” (no. 91) and that the economy, politics, community involvement, and technology all affect the future of the planet and humankind. How can we become more aware of our connectedness?

Page 7: CALENDAR JULY 18/19, 2015 SIXTEENTH SUNDAY …...2015/07/19  · THE SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 19, 2015 MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK Monday, July 20: Morning Prayer Tuesday,

2. Changes to lifestyle and consumption habits can make a big difference. For example, get a re-usable water bottle, take shorter showers, walk, bike or take public transportation instead of driving, recycle, compost food waste, and buy energy efficient appliances.

3. Make changes institutionally at your parish, school, or workplace. For example, start recycling and composting, use washable dinnerware in cafeterias, share electronically instead of printing, do an energy audit, and install solar panels.

4. Support local efforts to solve environmental problems. Community groups around the country are working to make city, county, and state-wide changes that can make a big difference. Find out what is going on locally and get involved.

5. Contact your members of Congress to share Pope Francis’ message and urge action to address climate change. Sign up for action alerts with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops at http://cqrcengage.com/catholicbishops/jphd.

Prayer Triune Lord, wondrous community of infinite love, teach us to contemplate you in the beauty of the universe, for all things speak of you. Awaken our praise and thankfulness for every being that you have made. Give us the grace to feel profoundly joined to everything that is. God of love, show us our place in this world as channels of your love for all the creatures of this earth, for not one of them is forgotten in your sight. Enlighten those who possess power and money that they may avoid the sin of indifference, that they may love the common good, advance the weak, and care for this world in which we live. The poor and the earth are crying out. O Lord, seize us with your power and light, help us to protect all life, to prepare for a better future, for the coming of your Kingdom of justice, peace, love and beauty. Praise be to you! Amen.
