Weekly Wisdom

Divine Mercy Sunday

Today is the Sunday of Divine Mercy. This feast was given to us by Pope John Paul II when he canonized Sr. Faustina on April 30, 2000. Sr. Faustina had a vision of Jesus detailed in her diary:

“In the evening, when I was in my cell, I became aware of the Lord Jesus clothed in a white garment. One hand was raised in blessing; the other was touching the garment at the breast. From the opening of the garment at the breast there came forth two large rays, one red and the other pale. In silence, I gazed intently at the Lord; my soul was overwhelmed with fear, but also with great joy. After a while, Jesus said to me, ‘paint an image according to the pattern you see, with the inscription: Jesus, I trust in You.’”

Despite great opposition from those in her convent, Sr. Faustina did as Jesus requested and shared her story. Jesus wanted the image to be publicly honored; this was accomplished through her trust and willingness to serve Him. It is on this day, especially, that we celebrate this feast to trust in Christ’s mercy and to show mercy to others. This image is currently located in our Chapel. Visit www.formed.org for many resources on the Feast of Divine Mercy.

Prayer of the week: Lord have mercy on me. I ask that you grant me the courage to extend forgiveness towards those that have hurt me and to release my anger and pain.

Have a blessed week,Your AFF Team

TEEN CLOTHING CLOSET MINISTRY: Stacey Lawlor has been the lead parent volunteer coordinator for the Teen Closet for the past four years. At this time, she is looking to pass the baton to another parent/adult/young adult who may be able to bring a set of fresh eyes and ideas.

“Of all the volunteer activities I have done over the past 15 or so years, the Teen Closet has been one of the most fulfilling to date for me. It’s a simple place where Christ’s messages are heard and acted upon all year long. For the teens who volunteer their time, it’s a place to see how they can directly contribute to someone else’s well-being and for the teens whose needs are met, it’s a reminder to them that they are loved and not forgotten.” – Stacey

If you have any more questions, are remotely interested, or definitely interested, please contact Jeff Mingin in the Parish Office. Thank you for your prayerful consideration with serving in the Teen Clothing Closet Ministry.

BULLETIN: The deadline for bulletin notices is Monday at 9:30 a.m. Please submit to Carla, the Parish Secretary. Any inserts will need to be digital as everything is emailed to the publishing company.

“CREATION CARE CORNER”Earth Day is April 22, a Sunday this year. We need to be

more proactive. Being part of Earth Day celebrations (on April 21, Virginia Beach has a celebration at Mt. Trashmore, from 11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. with numerous activities, and on April 19 at St. Nicholas Church, there is a celebration from 7:00-8:30 p.m. entitled “Beyond a Throwaway Culture”) is one way to accomplish this.

The overall theme this year for Earth Day is “End Plastic Pollution.” Plastic pollution is poisonous, killing marine life, contaminating our water supplies and impacting our health. It is threatening the survival of our planet and all living things on it. Some actions we can take to reduce the amount of plastics we consume are: instead of plastic straws, use glass/metal ones that are reusable; use reusable canvas bags for shopping, keep them in the car; use glass/metal water/drinking bottles; and store food leftovers in glass containers.

Our parish Earth Day celebration on the weekend of April 21/22 will include various environmental activities. Among them is a paper shredder that will be available from April 21 to April 28. There will be the opportunity to sign up to receive your weekly bulletin online on the parish website, which will save paper and trees. Another proactive choice is signing up to engage in one of the Earth-helpful actions, which will be printed on the pledge cards that will be on your seats in the Worship Space. In making your pledge, you will be agreeing to do this activity until September. Hopefully, you will find ways to get more involved this year.

“I exhort everyone to see the world through the eyes of God the Creator: the earth is an environment to be safeguarded, a garden to be cultivated.” ~ Pope Francis

Note: The Holy Family Parish Environmental Committee had a discussion about our “Creation Care Corner” articles at our March meeting. A decision was made that each committee member will take turns weekly to write a short action-oriented blurb on some environmental issue in the place of my article. I thank all of my readers over the years for their faithfulness in reading my articles and for the frequent compliments I have received.
