Our Pages! Sophia Fleming Chapter has been blessed for many years now to have Juniors who have served as Pages. Juniors are those members under the age of 36.

What is a Page? She can be a Junior Page, that is someone, ages 14-18, who is a member of the Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.). Princess Malee Society has been very active at our state conferences. Senior Pages are DAR members, ages 18-40.

Quite frankly, none of the state conferences, nor Continental Congress, would be able to function without our hard-working Pages. They do the leg work for everything, a myriad of duties too numerous to mention, serving as Personal Pages to the State Regent, Honorary State Regents, Visiting Dignitaries, etc. If you are trying to find a venue, ask a Page! They usually know.

After the Saturday night banquet, you will probably recess through the receiving line with your white gloves. You will notice the line of your State Officers, Honorary State Regents, Visiting Dignitaries, and opposite the receiving line, you will see a row of Pages. As you are greeting the Dignitaries, you may feel a tap on the shoulder by a Page. This means you need to move along a litt le faster through the line. The Pages are instructed to do this as the receiving line is very long, and the dignitaries usually have somewhere else to be as their Conference schedule is usually jam-packed. So don?t be upset at the Pages! They are just doing their job according to Protocol.

When you see our current Sophia Fleming Chapter Pages, Kimberly Hollis Jordan and Natalie Wetherington, our Dual Membership Sophia Fleming Chapter DAR/Princess Malee Society CAR Page, Cambryn Adams, and our Princess Malee Society CAR Junior Page, Emma Glazener please give them a big hug! They deserve it!

A shout out to Julia Saldivar, who served as the FSSDAR Co-Page Chair, Symanek Administration, 2013-2015. Donna Chapuis-Signor served as FSSDAR Co-Page Chair, with Julia, but was not yet a member of Sophia Fleming Chapter.

Carol Westermann met Charlene Bradley from the Captain James Cook

Chapter in Sydney, Australia. Charlene was the Organizing Chapter Regent in

October 1984, with 10 original members, and today their chapter has 44

members and approximately 25 Associate members from Florida.

The need from Australia's bushfire devastation left an impact on Carol and

she will be speaking at our chapter meeting on March 12. The Sophia Fleming

Chapter daughters are encouraged to help the Captain James Cook chapter

by becoming an Associate member ($15 annual dues) and/or donating to

their chapter project - Australian Bushfire and Drought Relief. They will be

sending all of the chapter project donations collected, to these three charities:

1. FoodBank NSW and ACT (a not-for-profit,

non-denominational organization, which provides

food for people in need)

2. WIRES (rescues and rehabilitates sick, injured

and orphaned native wildlife)

3. Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal

(offers assistance to communities after the fires have passed, helping them to

rebuild lost facilit ies, infrastructure and the local economy. Their Back to

School program supports children who have lost uniforms and books in the

fires).

Please help the Captain James Cook Chapter in their efforts to help others.

Monarch Butterfly

Most of us know the Monarch butterfly from its impressive migration, a route that spans up to 3,000 miles from Mexico to the Canadian border. But these North American travelers are in trouble: Their population has declined by 90% since1990. This decline is linked primarily to habitat destruction. We?ve converted most of the butterfly?s central migratory grassland for agriculture or urban development. Climate change also throws off their migratory timing, posing serious long-term risks for the survival of our favorite orange and black insects.

A D A R SCH O O L M I N U T E! KATE DUNCAN SMITH DAR SCHOOL, INC

Kate Duncan Smith (KDS) was founded on Gunter Mountain by the Alabama

DAR in 1924. The school serves grades K-12 and provides opportunities for

children of a large rural area in the Appalachian foothills to develop a strong love

of American ideals as they obtain a distinctive academic background. They

emphasize a rich cultural heritage and a patriotic climate.

KDS has become the major force of the local population

educationally, economically, socially,physically, and

spiritually.

The "Gem of Gunter Mountain" stands as a monument to

the love and devotion of the DAR. Go to kdsdar.org-- The

pictures are lovely!!

Flag m om en t Ch r is Bass

The flag shown here is the only known example surviving from the late eighteenth

century or early nineteenth century of the standard that

represented the thirteen English colonies of North

America before they separated from the mother

country. Known as the American Grand Union or

Continental flag, it featured a field of thirteen red and

white stripes to represent each of the colonies and a

canton? the smaller rectangular section in the upper

corner nest to the staff? configured in the from of the British Union Jack.

Ser v ices To Veter ans Com m i t tee D ebbie Cor son

Please continue to bring aluminum beverage cans for Kans4K9s

collection. If you are new to our chapter, this effort is coordinated

by our National Defense Committee Chair Lynn Vernon, who

collects and sells these cans to recyclers each

month and then donates the proceeds to K9s

for Warriors. K9's for Warriors rescues dogs

from shelters and trains them as service

companions. So, we are recycling, rescuing

animals, and aiding our veterans all in one.

(Also, needed are peanut butter (creamy), dog

toys, food, treats, and other items.) Bring donations to our monthly

meetings. Please contact Lynn Vernon ,[email protected]

Vet eran St or ies f rom Sophia Flem ing Chapt er Mem bers

Members have been encouraged to share stor ies handed down through their families of the experiences of veterans. They can be silly anecdotes,

observat ions, stor ies from veteran?s journals, family tales, or from obituar ies as is this submit tal. To start things off, I decided to share this

veteran?s story with local t ies to northeast Flor ida. I encourage you to share and tell the story of America, the stor ies of Sophia Fleming. These stor ies

are our her itage as much as our Revolut ionary Pat r iots and we should honor them.

Tech. Sgt . Archie Leazer, from Greensboro, NC, served dur ing WWI as a radio operator in B-17s and B-24s and part icipated in 37 bombing missions over enemy terr itory, including raids over Midway, the Bismarck Sea, New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, New Britain, and Rabaul. His decorat ions included the Dist inguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Air Medal.

After returning to the U.S. he was stat ioned at Drew Field, Tampa, FL, where he t rained new recruits on combat f lying missions. On July 11, 1944, the plane he was f lying encountered mechanical diff icult ies, and the crew was forced to parachute from the st r icken plane. He drowned in the Tiger Lake, near Dunnellon, FL, just 90 miles from Orange Park, when, according to family stor ies his plane ditched on top of him. Archie?s personal journal gives interest ing (for a young man of 24) but somewhat sketchy details of his m issions and the people who flew them with him.

Archie?s two brothers also served simultaneously in the Army and survived the war. Albert (father of Sophia Fleming member, Debbie Corson), served in the Aleut ian Islands, and relocated to Texas after the war. His other brother, Herman served in the Pacif ic Islands, and remained in North C arolina after the war, but maintained a second residence in Ft . Lauderdale unt il short ly before his death in 1996.
