President’s Message

Happy New Year....

Do you have your 2017 calendar yet? I hope so, because NSQG has many fun and important dates to post

there. You'll want to fill in the 3rd Thursday of every month, so you don't miss any of our fabulous speakers.

Then don't forget to mark Saturday, March 4, for our Winter Picnic. There is always something for

everyone...fun classes, charity sewing, fellowship, and let's not forget the food.

Instead of our regular meeting on the 3rd Thursday in June, mark your calendar for Saturday, June 17, 2017.

We will meet at the Rolling Meadows Community Center for another day of sewing. June can be a very busy

month, so reserve the day now for yourself.

September 22-24, 2017, will be our Quilt Show, "Sweet Inspirations". Pencil those dates in now. This is the

most important weekend of the next two years for NSQG and we need all hands on deck.

Congratulations to Gail Tackette as the winner of our last raffle quilt, Civil War Blocks Remembered.

Her name was drawn at our November meeting.

As always, if you need more information about an NSQG function, please check our website...www.nsqg.club.

We do our best to keep it current.

Quilt on...

Marcia Bowen, President

She has designed two fabric lines for Art Gallery. Sara has Aurifil thread collections to coordinate with her embroidery patterns. Her work has appeared in Modern Quilting, Sew News, Generation Q and Modern Quilts Unlimited. Sara has published the class Building Better Bags: Interfacing and Structure on Craftsy. January 19, 2017 Cheryl Sledoba Working Weekly - Staying Inspired How Small Quilts Helped Me Find My Artistic Voice

Cheryl works in the comic book industry by day and is a fiber artist by night. She creates original and contemproary designs for her art quilts, frequently using electronic components as well as fusibles, yarns, jewels, sequins, beads and various other media to embellish her work. Much of her work is small, often under eight inches square. Recent work incorporates LEDs, microprocessors and other electronic components to make her fiber art light up. Her talk should be an illuminating experience! You can check out Cheryl’s website for more information about this exciting quilt artist at http://muppin.com/wordpress/

Star Strings Quilt Settler’s Puzzle Quilt

This half day (3 hour) workshop is for all skill levels and will introduce participants to freezer paper foundation piecing, an alternative to paper piecing. Arlington Heights Library 500 N Dunton Ave Arlington Heights, Illinoi

March 16, 2017 Pam Buda Secrets of Professional Quilters- Revealed!

NSQG is indeed lucky to have booked Pam Buda! This popular speaker is currently booking for 2019; we don’t have to wait that long. Pam’s presentation is packed full of useful information that will teach us how to use alternative piecing methods for making units, as well as tips and hints relating to every aspect of quilting. She will share the secrets she has gathered over her years of trial and error, taking classes and learning from fellow designers and national teachers. Pam’s website is http://www.heartspunquilts.com/index.htm

Friday, March 17 Star Strings Quilt & Pincushion Workshop This full day workshop is open to all level of quilters. This quilt features a variety of scrappy Sawtooth Star blocks, each featuring a string paper pieced center. You will utilize some of the techniques that Pam presented in the lecture. These striking blocks can be made into pincushions or the Star Strings quilt. You decide the size of your finished project. Saturday, March 18 Settler’s Puzzle Quilt Workshop This full day workshop is open to quilters of all skill levels. Although the quilt looks complex, with Pam’s tips it is much easier than it appears! Location and time for both of these workshops Rolling Meadows Library 2nd Floor 3110 Martin Lane Rolling Meadows, Illinois 9:30AM – 4:30PM

Charity Projects • The 1000 Christmas stockings that Pat Flaherty made in 2016 were delivered and distributed in December at the Mission of Our Lady of the Angels in the West Humboldt Park area of Chicago. It is in one of the poorest areas of the city. • Members have been busy making hospice quilts (over 70). A special thank you goes out to Inga who has been putting together hospice quilt kits from her own stash and has been bringing them to the meetings for others to pick-up, take home and finish. The finished quilts are taken to Rainbow Hospice by Marne Chilstrom. The hospice provides a quilt for each patient. • Members donate quilts to Project Linus, domestic abuse shelters and other charities. The need for charity quilts is unending. It is good to know that our members devote so much time, energy and fabric to such worthy causes! • Donations of fabric continue to roll in! In the last month we have received fabric and sewing item donations from four people. The donations range greatly in size and content from a few boxes, to several garage bags of fabric, and books of fabric samples from a designer. After I pick up the donations, I sort what we have been given. The designer sample books required some effort and tools (wrench, screwdriver, etc.) to pull apart in order to get at the fabric. Each piece of fabric in the books had a paper label on the back detailing content (linen, cotton, polyester, silk, wool, blends, etc.). Unfortunately this paper backing does not peel off easily! After some experimentation I found that using a hot iron (no steam) worked well but was time consuming. The fabrics have been sorted into the following categories: cotton, linen, silk, and blends (which include polyester). I am still working out possibilities for the best uses for these pieces. If you have ideas on uses, please contact me. Thank you for all that you do, Deb Szott [email protected] Charity Chairman

Bee News Start the new year by joining a bee! If there isn’t one in your area, start a new one! Please contact (Queen Bee) Linda Wallin if you are interested. [email protected] , 847-812-1776 You’ll be happy if you do.

2017 Winter Picnic The 2017 Winter Picnic will be held on Saturday, March 4, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, 1234 N. Arlington Heights Road in Arlington Heights. Doors open 9:00 AM. You will need these extra few minutes to check in, get your name tag, put your food away, and find your place so you are ready to go at 9:30 AM. Morning classes are from 9:30 AM to 12:00 noon. Lunch break is from 12:00 noon to 1:00 PM. Afternoon classes are from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM. At 3:30 clean up begins and we will leave by 4:00. The cost to attend is $6 when you pre-register, or $7 at the door on the day of the Winter Picnic, plus a dish to pass at lunchtime. NSQG supplies plates, cups, plastic ware and bottled water ... all other beverages are BYOB. This annual event has been enjoyed by many members for years. Please take advantage of the expertise of our teachers who have donated their time. We hope this to be a fun event for everyone. All classes are half-day, some in the morning, and some in the afternoon. There will also be a sewing area for those who want to work on their own projects as well those who wish to work on charity projects. NSQG members are not only good quilters; we are also pretty good cooks! Lunch is potluck and never disappoints. Please bring a serving utensil with your dish to pass. Don't forget to label things with your name.

Our 2017 Raffle Quilt A short story about the 2017 NSQG raffle quilt………

First came the fabric, a light blue batik and a dark blueberry fossil fern. Next came the idea. Kathy Issacks designed the quilt using EQ7. Many NSQG members stitched together the blocks which were cut by Maria Ross using an Accuquilt Go! die. The blocks were collected and next Kathy Issacks with the help of Maria Ross and Marcia Bowen sewed the blocks together. Sue DiVarco custom quilted Nancy Haney embroidered the label. Just like all the raffle quilts before this one, many people were involved in creating this piece of art. “Snails in the Blueberry Patch” soon will be ready for its debut.

2017 Quilt Show

Happy New Year NSQG!! Can you believe it is already 2017? Just think, in only a few short nine months our quilt show will come to life! There is

still time to join the ‘Sweet Team’ as we work to make this year’s quilt show the best it possibly can be. Won’t you join

us?

Our Quilt Show Committee meets during the 2nd week of the month. Our next meeting is January 10th, 6:30PM at the

Palatine Public Library. I know this newsletter may not reach you until right about that time, so if you are still thinking

about filling one of our vacant spots on the committee, please contact me and I’ll be happy to get you up to speed.

Here’s some news we'd like to share:

Raffle Doll Diana Thompson is coordinating the wardrobe for our American Girl raffle doll, named Samantha. She came

with three outfits and she has acquired several new outfits and shoes. Many of you took patterns and/or kits home with

you. If you are finished with your projects, please be sure to bring them to the next meeting. We want to get Samantha

ready for her publicity photo shoot in February! Tickets for the doll will be ready by March.

Mini Quilt Sale: Cindy Olsen is coordinating the Mini Quilts Sale as well as the Full Size Quilts Commission Sale. Please

see our website for the guidelines on the Mini’s. If you are able, please make one or two mini’s. These mini’s are fun to

do and are quick projects. They are great for a weekend and what better time of the year to stay home and make a mini!

Raffle Quilt: Kathy Isaacks has designed an amazing blue on blue quilt for our next raffle quilt which will be revealed

SOON!!! Be sure to help in any way you can to sell tickets or travel with both the quilt and the doll to area events to help

promote our guild and raise money.

Scrap Sales: Susan Leverenze and Kathleen Haaker are collecting scrap fabric now until July as they organize our Scrap

Sales. The new year is a GREAT time of year to pull out the fabrics from your stash that no longer spark your creative

juices! Bring them to us and let's turn them into some cash!

Page 7: Calendar of Events · Star Strings Quilt Settler’s Puzzle Quilt (3 hour) workshop is for all skill levels and will introduce participants to freezer paper foundation piecing, an

UFO Sales: For this sale, Sally Schlatter, coordinator, will be collecting UFO’s (unfinished objects)! Consider donating

your projects that no longer inspire you or those that no longer fit your taste. Your unfinished project may interest and

inspire someone else. Donate your quilt blocks, quilt tops, pieces cut but not stitched together, and the guild will make

some money!

Raffle Baskets – Maria Aseron and Kathy Isaacks are coordinating this new feature to our show. The goal is to have

twenty baskets in the raffle. Come by the Quilt Show table at our guild meetings if you'd like to sponsor a basket or have

something to donate. We will also accept donations of baskets, ribbons and cellophane.

Exhibits – Last but not least are YOUR quilts! What would a Quilt Show be without quilts? Now is the time to think

about which quilt(s) you'll enter into the show. Your quilt should be a quilt that has been finished since our last show.

Our categories will be Mini, Wall-hanging, Sofa, Large, Challenge, Garments, Accessories and Sponsored Youth Entry.

Help is needed in these areas!

Book Sales – We'd like to include a New/Used Book Sale area. The job is to collect books from our guild

members, organize them and prep them for sale. This sale has a VERY important role at our show as it is a vital

fundraising area for us! At the last show, more than $2000 was added to our treasury through the book sale.

Quilt Travel Coordinator – Soon we will need to start traveling to area events and guilds to promote and sell

tickets for our Raffle Quilt and Raffle Doll and promote our Show! A volunteer is needed to organize the schedule and

keep track of our Quilt and Doll as it goes on tour!

Awards Committee: - Do you like to make and/or designs bows, ribbons or small crafts? A volunteer is needed

to design and organize the creation of our Award Ribbons for the show. Just a peek on Pinterest under Quilt Show

Ribbons ought to get your creative juices flowing!

Volunteer Coordinator – A person is needed to organize volunteers for the show. We've prepared a preliminary

sign up as part of the planning process; now we need someone to coordinate the volunteers to keep our event running

smoothly!

Advertising, Publicity and Signage: A volunteer is needed to get the word out about our Quilt Show on-line,

create the advertising campaign and be in charge of our signage.

Thank you all for your participation in the show. We couldn't do such a big project without you! Please come visit the

quilt show table at our monthly meetings for all the latest updates!
