A COMMUNITY OF FAITH AND LEARNING

Dear Parents and families, It was wonderful to have so many of our mothers, grandmothers and those like mothers

to us at our Liturgy last Friday morning. Thank you to the students for the prayerful way

they participated in the Liturgy. As always it was great to hear what makes our mums so

special to all of us. Thank you to all the staff for their organisation of the liturgy and

morning tea. Congratulations to Ange Reid who won the Mother’s Day Raffle. Thanks to

everyone who bought and sold tickets. $313.20 was raised for the Junior Red Cross &

Mission Group. Thanks also to Noles for the beautiful flowers for our prayer table.

A reminder that this Friday is a Pupil Free Day. Staff will be working with Danielle Peters

from the Ballarat Catholic Education Office. Our focus for the day is on Social Justice and

the Principles of Catholic Social Teaching. Our focus question for the day will be “Why do

we do the things we do at St Joseph’s, Hopetoun?” This focus has come about as a direct

result from our last school review, in particular the school community’s responses to the

Enhancing Catholic School’s Identity survey that was completed in preparation for the

school review. We are looking forward to working with Danielle and sharing more about

the day with you in the coming weeks.

Whilst on the subject of Pupil Free Days, my apologies to all families for setting a Pupil

Free Day on our catering day at the Speed Field Days (Thursday August 3rd). This clash

was an oversight on my part. We have decided that we WON’T have a Pupil Free Day on

that day. Staff will still work with Chris Mitchell (Learning & Teaching Advisor from Balla-

rat Catholic Education Office) as planned but we will have Casual Relief Teachers in the

classrooms so it will be school as normal for the students.

Catholic Education Week

We are gearing for a big day next Tuesday celebrating Catholic Education

Week. The theme for Catholic Education Week this year is ‘Strive for the

Greater Gifts’, which is based on St Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians

which goes on to say that everything we do should be centred on love.

Our celebrations will begin with Mass at 11am in our church. All family

members and parishioners are warmly invited to join us for Mass. Follow-

ing Mass students will participate in activities including outlining how

they can follow in the footsteps of Jesus to ensure that all that they do

and say is based on love.

Students need to wear their normal school uniform and bring their recess

& a drink bottle. Hot roast rolls and fruit will be provided for lunch. If your

child does not eat this they will need to bring their lunch also.

A big thanks to the army of helpers who will ensure everyone is well fed

on the day and to the staff for all their preparation and organisation.

School Advisory Council Due to not having a quorum last night the School Advisory Council meet-ing has been held over until June. Thank You A big thanks to Carley for volunteering to bag up our pie warmer contain-ers, greatly appreciated!! Aladdin Trip With the Aladdin trip fast approaching we ask that parents begin to think ahead....does your child suffer from travel sickness? Please ensure you are prepared with either travel sickness tablets of wrist bands if you know your child feels queasy with bus travel. School Photos Please note school photos are set down for Thursday 15th June. Students will be required to wear full winter uniform. Please ensure your child has the correct uniform for this day. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN OUR CLASSROOMS?

Room 1

This week we are reading Williams Wet Week. Our vocabulary words are wet and quickly. Please try and

help your child come up with some synonyms and antonyms for these words to add to our Vocabulary Chart.

In Writing we are preparing to write Information Reports. We have learnt the difference between a fact

and an opinion. A fact is something that is true and you can prove and an opinion is something you think or

feel. We have started creating Fact files on different topics. Children have been given 4 topics to choose

from and have to pick one and come up with four facts about this topic. We have been learning about the

structure of the genre for example you need to start with a general classification saying what you are go-

ing to describe. Following that you need to include 3 or 4 facts about the topic. Finally you need to con-

clude your information report with a statement that contains an interesting fact. Children have been

asked to bring in any interesting informative texts they can find for example. Newspaper articles, bro-

chures or posters.

Mathematics this week we will be ending our focus on doubles facts. If you have a dice you can still play

games at home to help your child recall their doubles facts quickly.

Dice game- roll a dice, double the number on the dice face. This could be played as a race against the tim-

er and record how many correct responses your child gets or a race against the person they are playing to

call the number out first.

In Integrated Studies we have been learning about weather. Could children please bring along an empty,

clear plastic bottle that we can use to complete an experiment. Miss Cook

Room 2

As you know we have been exploring the Solar System this term. The 3/4’s have been working hard to ex-

plain how day and night occurs whilst the grade 5/6’s have been focusing on how the entire solar system

was formed and how the planets orbit the sun. In addition to this, students have also been creating and

developing a model to assist in their explanations and have turned the Mary MacKillop room into a galaxy

of its own. I can’t wait to see the final products as the students have been working hard to complete their

models!

In Mathematics we have been working on improving our ability to rapidly recall equations, which use a com-

bination of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We have also been exploring various forms of

measurement and students have been engaging in lots of hands on activities to make the learning more au-

thentic. Triangles have been exploring length, in particular metres. Squares have been exploring capacity

in the form of litres and have been tirelessly measuring and comparing containers to see which one would

hold the most. Diamonds have been investigating mass through the forms of kitchen scales, balance scales

and comparing objects to set weights (building to 1 kilogram). Pentagons have also been exploring mass and

have been examining the difference between Gross and Net mass and relating this to products they con-

sume. They are even able to calculate the weight of one item in a packet when only the total mass was la-

beled. Hexagons explored length and width and how this information can then be used to find the area and

perimeter of rectangles, squares and triangles. Miss Dalton

HOUSEKEEPING!!

Student Absence from School A reminder that it is a legal requirement for parents to explain absences from school. We do not need to know ‘nitty gritty’ details, simply sickness, doctor’s appointment or family reasons will suffice. Please remember to send in an absent note on the day your child returns to school. Thank you.

Sunscreen Sunscreen is provided by the school for our students, however we do encourage the children to bring their own sunscreen to school to assist with sun protection. Students are regularly encouraged by teachers to apply sunscreen throughout the day.

Hats School hats MUST be worn at all times when students are outdoors, except for extremely windy days where hats blow over the fence. School Hats are now $15.00.

Signing out Please remember to sign out your child at the office if you need to take them from school during the day. This is not only a legal requirement but also an important part of our emergency management plan.

P & F dockets A reminder that any purchases for P & F from IGA must be put on the P & F account (not school account). Dockets then need to be sent to school please.

Pie warmer containers

A reminder that students can bring lunch to school wrapped in foil or in a foil container to be

heated in the pie warmer.

Pie warmer containers are available from the office for $10.00 for 50 containers.

Please ensure your child’s pie warmer is clearly marked with their name to avoid confusion at lunch time.
