TheUniversityofTechnology,Sydneyiscommittedtofreedomofinquiry,equalityofopportunity,thepursuitofexcellenceinteaching,researchandscholarship,andinteractionwiththeprofessions.UTSwasoriginallyestablishedastheNewSouthWalesInstituteofTechnologyin1965.In1988itattaineduniversitystatusandwasjoinedbytheSchoolofDesignoftheSydneyCollegeoftheArts.TheUniversityresultedfromamalgamationsbroughtaboutbytherestructuringofthehighereducationsectorinthelate1980s,andinJanuary1990theKuring-gaiCollegeofAdvancedEducation,theInstituteofTechnicalandAdultTeacherEducationoftheSydneyCollegeofAdvancedEducationandthe‘old’UTSformedthenewUniversityofTechnology,Sydney.

In2004,theCounciloftheUniversityrecommittedUTStoitscurrentvisionasarticulatedinSetting the Pace.Insummary,thisvisionisforUTStoberenownedas:• aproviderofdynamicandchallenging
professionallyorientedhighereducation• avibrantlearningcommunity• aleaderincollaborativeresearchandeducation• aninternationaluniversity• an influential and enterprising university• aninspiringplacetowork.During2004,Councilalsoapprovedanewstrategicplanfor the period 2005–2008, which defines objectives and strategies for UTS to fulfill its vision. The plan is supported bykeyperformanceindicators.Theplanisbuiltaroundthreeinterdependentthemes:1. UTSisdistinguishedbyitsimaginativeand
collaborativeapproachestopractice-orientedteachingandlearning,andoutcomes-orientedresearchandcreativepractice.

Theemblemembodiesthreemaincomponents.ThemostprominentfeatureistheanchordrawnfromthecoatofarmsoftheCityofSydneywherethelargestcampusofUTSislocated.ItreinforcestheUniversity’straditionalcloselinkswithgovernment,commerceandindustrywithinthecity.ThebaseoftheanchoralsoformsoneofthespiralsofthedoublehelixintherepresentationoftheDNAmolecule,thebasicbuildingblockoflifeitself.Thesymbol,therefore,reflectstheinnovative,technologicalcharacteroftheUniversity.Thewavemotifatthebasecomplementstheotherelementsinthedesign,andunderliesthemaritimepositionoftheCityofSydney.Thiscontemporarydesigniscontainedinaheraldicshieldwhichprovidesasenseofcontinuitywithtraditionforinstitutionsofhigherlearningthroughtheages.Theemblem(intealbluePMS321)canbeusedsingly,orinassociationwiththestylised‘UTS’acronymtoformtheUTSlogo.ApplicationstousetheUTSemblemandlogoshouldbedirectedtotheRegistrar.
