The 4 rules of DIY video

• Get ready!• Get steady!

• Get seen!• Get sound!

Get ready!

• Plan and craft your story using point form or storyboards. Make sure you have a script!

Not all storyboards need pictures

Get ready!

Get steady!

• Shaky video is never fun to watch.

• Invest in a mini tripod system.

• Gorilla pod and stand

(under $50 combined).

• Binder clips can also

serve as a tripod.

Get seen!

• Try to shoot with natural light and always face the source.

• If you shoot indoors, use three lamps to light you or your subject from left, right

and behind.

Avoid lighting from below!

Get sound!• Poor sound quality is more likely to

result in a click off than poor visual quality.

• The higher the ceiling, the more hollow the sound.

• Consider using a lavalier microphone designed specifically for mobile devices or investing in a USB microphone.

Get sound!ex: Røde Smartlav or Blue USB mic,

both around $70

Free App: Røde or Tascam

Some things to note

• Avoid wearing anything with heavy patterns (herringbone, plaid, stripes).

• Check behind you for objects emerging

from strange places.

How to define your brand

• Pick 4 words to describe what you do or offer

• Create a plan that outlines how you will use video to define that brand

• Plan a consistent output of messaging/video blogs/storylines

Branding in Action

Can you guess the company?

• 4 Pillars: Quality, Durability, Functional, Fun

• Continuous, timely series of videos

• Same host, same style• The $360 Blender

Additional Tips

• Wear what makes you comfortable. You’ll appear more at ease and natural on camera.

• Don’t be afraid to fill the frame.• Take the time to script and rehearse.• Don’t feel pressured to get it right the

first time. That’s what editing is for.• Remember to shoot landscape format,

not portrait.

Adding Audio

What music should I use?

Audio will change the tone of your video. Choose something that is appealing to most people and doesn’t have offensive language.

Adding Audio

What music am I allowed to use?

Royalty-free: Allows the purchaser to pay for the music license only once and to use the music for as long as desired.
