A Troubled Territory• 1821 Mexico receives it’s

independence from Spain• 1824 Mexico becomes a federal

republic with California; both Alta and Baja

• November 7, 1836, Californians stood up to proclaim California a free sovereign state led by Juan Bautista Alvarado

• Native Americans seized control of the three missions

• 1833 Mexican congress demanded all missions to be secularized and land tribute to the Hispanic Indians

A Troubled Territory• Brevet Brigadier and Jose Figueroa

were the governor during the Mexican Era

• President of Mexico, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna cancelled Hijars commission as governor

• August 4, 1834, Figueroa took charge of secularization of the missions but died the following year

• 600 land grants were made during the Mexican Era

• 1832-1833 Agustin Zamorano, became acting governor; brought printing and develop trade with New England, Latin America, and the Far East

• September 1786, two trade ships headed to the Philippines

• 1792 English Naval Explorer, Captain George Vancouver led a scientific voyage in San Francisco Bay

• Was an exploration connection between Spanish California and scientific ambitions of Enlightenment

military power, California was very important

• 1914 San Diego Navy established it’s first Naval fleet

• September 1, 1939 During WWII, Germany invaded Poland, Japan invasion of Machuna during 1931

• December 7, 1941 Pearl Harbor was attacked

• War Department increase, California was making the United States a “Arsenal of Democracy

• Pearl Harbor threw the entire Pacific of California into panic

• Dissent California was more on industrial and labor related

• Dissent expanded in second half of 1900s into politics, feminism, sexuality, education, drug use, and military service

• Proposition 13 was passed by vote two thirds in favor, that reduced residential property taxes

• January 2003, taxpayers uncomfortable with governor, Gray Davis, put a pension to remove Davis

• Arnold Schwarzenegger, Australia immigrant, was elected governor in October 2003 when Davis was recalled

• Arnold considered perfect for governor; accomplish so much entering the United States as an immigrant, leading an immigrant state

• California economy around 1.5 trillion dollars
