activity: use a felt marker and place a dot on the stem just behind the tip where you see buds forming. as the stem grows, the dot will not move from that location because the stem only elongates (or grows) from the tip. See Picture a.

activity: look closely at the branches on your tree. See if you can find the terminal bud scars. use a tape measure to find out how much your tree has grown in a year. See Picture a

activity: Make a small scratch on the trunk of a young tree. You will see the new green bark underneath. hint: If you think your tree is dead, this is a good way to see if it is still alive. See Picture B.
activity: Find an old tree with a rough bark texture. look closely and you can see that the older bark slowly stretches and splits because the new growth is taking place on the inside.
activity: Measure the circumference and diameter of your tree. Start by measuring 4½ feet up from the ground. Place your tape around the tree and record the number. this will be the circumference. to find the diameter, divide the circumference by 3.14 or π.
activity: Rule of thumb for measuring the diameter. use a ruler or a yardstick if your tree is large. hold the ruler at 4½ feet off the ground against the trunk of the tree with the edge of the ruler along one side of the tree. Record the number at the other edge of the tree. this is the approximate diameter. See Picture C.
