2006 SEASON IN REVIEWsignal-caller to surpass 3,000 passing yards ina season. He was also named Pac-10 Offen-sive Player of the Week three times this year.

While the season-opening loss to Tennesseewas disappointing, it was not shocking – Calentered the game with a re-tooled offense un-der new coordinator Mike Dunbar, essentially arookie quarterback in Longshore, a new punterand punt returner, and a very inexperiencedsecondary. Mixing in 106,000 rabid orange-cladfans added up to an opening day loss, but alsoan easy-to-remember lesson to take everythingone play at a time.

The lesson kicked in immediately as the GoldenBears returned to Berkeley and focused in onanother major conference opponent. In theirhome opener, the Bears crushed the Big 10’sMinnesota, then cruised over Portland State be-fore mashing nationally-ranked Arizona State. After beating Oregon State on the road, theBears shocked 11th-ranked Oregon, 45-24, witha Homecoming performance to remember be-fore an electrifying partisan sellout crowd of72,516. That Oregon game was the first of threeMemorial Stadium sellouts on the year, anotherfirst in over 50 years. In fact, Cal had only soldout three other non-Big Games since the early1950s.

Three more victories lifted Cal into the na-tional top 10, the third straight year that Cal hasbeen ranked in the top 10.

However, a tough road game at Arizona re-sulted in a heart-breaking 24-20 loss which fea-tured multiple near-misses. In that game, Jack-son tallied 285 all-purpose yards, including a95-yard punt return touchdown. The loss ef-fectively knocked the Golden Bears out of thenational championship picture, but the biggestgame of the year still loomed.

Nov. 18, 2006 was the date of Cal’s show-down with four-time defending Pac-10 cham-pion USC in Los Angeles and it will be remem-bered as the day Cal came closest to its firstRose Bowl bid since the 1958 season. The twoleague frontrunners went toe-to-toe for the en-tire game, with Cal holding a 9-6 lead with 20minutes to go in the game, but those 20 minutessaw the Trojans knock home a field goal fol-lowed by a pair of fourth-quarter touchdownsto escape with the victory and an eventual RoseBowl appearance.

After a bye week, the Golden Bears re-grouped and then sent their seniors off in classwith a fifth straight victory over archrivalStanford in the Big Game. It is Cal’s longest winstreak in the ancient rivalry since the early 1920sand it improved Tedford’s record to a perfect 5-0 against the Cardinal.

While there has been some disappointment inBerkeley this year, the level of expectations forthe Cal Bears is higher than it has been in overa half-century. And while there have been sometough losses, one simple fact must be remem-bered: Cal has lost 20 games in five years un-der Tedford; the Bears lost 43 games in the fiveyears prior to his arrival. Once again in 2006,the ups have clearly overwhelmed the downsin yet another successful season for the GoldenBears.

UNPRECEDENTEDSUCCESSCONTINUES FORGOLDEN BEARS

Perhaps the greatest measure of the level ofsuccess to which head coach Jeff Tedford hasbrought the California football program is thefact that a year which included a share of thePac-10 Championship, 10 victories, a fourthstraight bowl appearance, a third bowl victory,a top 15 final ranking and a fifthconsecutive defeat of Stanford in the Big Gamehas been labeled by some as a disappointment. The reality is that Tedford has lifted the GoldenBears into a golden era not seen in these partssince the early 1950s. California football hasbecome a recognized national power and asource of pride for alumni, fans and studentsthroughout the nation.

Rather than up-and-down, California’s 2006season is better described as down-and-up. Atough season-opening loss to Tennessee wasa definite downer, but that was followed by adominating eight-game winning streak. Afterback-to-back November losses foiled Bearhopes for a National Championship and a RoseBowl, the resilient team rose back up and up-ended archrival Stanford to not only cap a nine-victory regular season, but also to earn a shareof the Pac-10 Championship for the first timesince 1975.

The season culminated with a dominant per-formance in the 29th annual Holiday Bowl as Calrolled to a 45-10 triumph over Texas A&M, man-handling a team which many thought would betoo physical for the Pac-10 co-champs. Instead, the Golden Bears were led by running backsMarshawn Lynch and Justin Forsett, who eachtallied 100 rushing yards, and linebackerDesmond Bishop, who registered 12 tackles andwas the key to the Bears shutting down theAggies’ vaunted option attack.

In addition to advancing to a bowl game for afourth straight time for the first time in programhistory, many other firsts were accomplished

by the Golden Bears in 2006. The Bears alsoposted their fifth straight winning season forthe first time in over 50 years, their first five-game stretch of scoring 40 or more points, theirfirst eight-game winning streak since 1950 andtheir first share of a conference title since 1975.In addition, the Bears broke school records forseason tickets sold (40,262) and average homeattendance (64,318).

Individual highlights also abounded as Lynchand cornerback Daymeion Hughes were namedthe Pac-10’s Offensive and Defensive Playersof the Year, respectively. Hughes and wide re-ceiver/return specialist DeSean Jackson earnedinvitations to Orlando, Fla., for the ESPN CollegeFootball Awards Shows and five differentGolden Bears were recognized as All-Ameri-cans – Jackson, Hughes, Lynch, Bishop anddefensive tackle Brandon Mebane.

The Bears had 18 players recognized as all-conference performers. Bishop, Mebane andcenter Alex Mack joined Hughes and Lynch onthe all-league first team, while Jackson becameCal’s first all-conference first-team selection attwo positions (wide receiver and punt returner)since 1999. In addition, eight Bears were namedto the Pac-10 All-Academic teams, led by seniorfirst-team selections Byron Storer and RandyBundy.

In the record books, Jackson set Pac-10 andCalifornia records in punt return touchdowns ina career (5) and a season (4), while Hughesclimbed to second in season (8) and career (15)interceptions and Lynch reached third in careerrushing yardage while becoming just the sec-ond Golden Bear player to record multiple 1,000-yard rushing seasons.

Other individual performance of note includeBishop leading the Pac-10 with 114 tackles, punter Andrew Larson stepped right into thelineup and leading the league in net punting andplacekicker Tom Schneider connecting on all 46of his PATs as well as 12-of-13 field goals in-side 50 yards, not to mention his matching theschool record with a 55-yarder in the Big Game.In his first year of action, quarterback NateLongshore has thrown for 23 touchdowns andhas a chance to become just the second Bear

CALIFORNIA Golden Bears

2006 GAME SUMMARIES 1-2No. 23/23 Tennessee 35, No. 9/12 California 18

Sept. 2, 2006 • TV: ESPN • Attendance: 106,009KNOXVILLE - California was victimized by big plays

and a bigger crowd as the Golden Bears dropped their2006 season-opener, 35-18, to Tennessee in front of106,009 fans in Neyland Stadium. It was the largestcrowd to ever watch a California football game.

Tennessee struck first with a 12-yard passing TD, thenthe Volunteers broke free for four straight big plays - a42-yard pass and a 80-yard pass play followed by a 50-yard strike down the middle and a tough 43-yard rushthrough traffic. Before the Golden Bears could settleinto any offensive rhythm, the Volunteers held a 35-0advantage and the hostile crowd was in a frenzy.

Cal cracked the scoring column with a 32-yard TomSchneider field goal in the third quarter and then closed the contest with twotouchdowns. Joe Ayoob found DeSean Jackson deep and the sophomorereceiver made a nifty move to dodge a flying Volunteer defender and find theend zone for a 40-yard score. Late in the game, Ayoob connected twice withJackson and once with Marcus O’Keith to set himself up for a one-yard scamperinto the end zone.

The Volunteer defense, which ranked second in the nation against the rushin 2005, held Cal to just 64 rushing yards as Marshawn Lynch carried just 12times for 74 yards (an average of 6.2 yards per carry). Safety Thomas DeCoudled the Bears with a career-high 13 tackles and Brandon Hampton snared hissecond career interception.

BERKELEY - The California Golden Bears reboundedfrom their opening-week loss with an impressive 42-17victory over Minnesota at Memorial Stadium. NateLongshore established himself as the Golden Bears’starting quarterback by completing 22-of-31 passes for300 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions.

Minnesota cracked the scoring column first with aneasy-looking drive on its first possession. However, Calresponded with a nine-play drive capped by Longshorefinding Robert Jordan for a 24-yard TD. The Bears thenopened the second quarter with a quick drive highlightedby a Lavelle Hawkins 42-yard reception and a two-yardTD grab by DeSean Jackson.

The Gophers knotted the game on a 99-yard kickoff return, but the Beardefense tightened and held Minnesota to just a field goal the rest of the way.

Meanwhile, Longshore continued to pick apart the secondary, findingJackson for two more touchdowns, a 48-yarder down the sideline and an 11-yarder across the middle.

California closed things out behind the gritty running of Marshawn Lynch (27carries for 139 yards) and Justin Forsett (12-77) and hard-nosed defense. Thevaunted Gopher running attack was held to just 109 rushing yards andDaymeion Hughes had a pair of key interceptions.

Jackson finished with 114 receiving yards, in addition to his three touchdownswhile Hawkins had career-bests of nine catches for 125 yards.

The Golden Bears heldWashington State without a touchdown as they rolledto a 21-3 victory in Martin Stadium. It was Cal’s first winin Pullman since 1979, a streak of 10 games.

Cal scored a pair of first-quarter touchdowns thenadded another in the second quarter. That was all theBears needed as they controlled the second-half behindMarshawn Lynch’s running efforts and a powerfuldefense. Cal held Washington State to 0-for-11 on third-down conversions in the game and also stopped theCougars on a pair of fourth-down efforts in the red zone.

Cal opened the scoring on a Lynch run from two yards out after Nu’u Tafisibroke through the line and snuffed a Cougar punt, recovering it at the five-yardline to set up the easy score.

After quarterback Nate Longshore scored on a draw later in the openingquarter, the score was 14-0 and the powerful Cal offense seemed to be gettingwarmed up.

However, Washington State tightened its defense and held the Bears untila Daymeion Hughes interception set up another Golden Bear score, this oneon an untouched eight-yard Lynch dash into the endzone.

While neither team scored in the second half, the Bears ate up the clockbehind Lynch’s efforts. The junior ran for four first downs in the fourth quarteralone, including one on third-and-nine and one on fourth-and-10.

The Bears offensive line also earned kudos after the Cougars recorded justone sack - they had entered the game leading the nation in sacks.

BERKELEY - Marshawn Lynch caught one of NateLongshore’s three touchdown passes and ran for anotherscore as No. 10 Cal won its eighth straight, 38-24 overthe Bruins on Saturday night.

Robert Jordan had two touchdown catches andDeSean Jackson romped 72 yards on his school-recordfourth TD punt return for the first-place Golden Bears, who moved one big step closer to their first conferencetitle since 1975.

Although UCLA outgained Cal and controlled playfor long stretches, Cal has several players capable ofrendering those long stretches pointless. Longshore was20-of-24 for 266 yards, and Lynch had 126 total yards.

Jackson finished off the Bruins with his third punt return for a score this season, tying the Pac-10 record in the third quarter.

Patrick Cowan passed for 329 yards and ran for a score in his fourth start asUCLA outgained Cal 516-433, but repeatedly failed to capitalize on strongdrives in the Bruins’ fourth consecutive loss.

Jackson, who already has scored 19 touchdowns for Cal as a sophomore, provided another electric moment. He caught Aaron Perez’s punt and took twosteps to his left, then reversed his field and picked up a crushing block fromThomas DeCoud before juking Perez and outrunning the rest of the Bruins tothe end zone.

Memorial Stadium was filled with 72,516 fans for its second sellout of theseason - and just the fifth for any opponent except Stanford since the 1950s.

TUCSON - California could not catch a break as itdropped a hard-fought Pac-10 battle with Arizona onthe road. The Golden Bears had one touchdown calledback by penalty, one called back by replay and anothernear-touchdown when their receiver could not keep hisbalance into the end zone. In addition, two interceptionswere called back by flags on a late game-tying drive byArizona. It all added up to a 24-20 Cal loss in the desert.

Cal had a pair of touchdowns from the spectacularDeSean Jackson to open a 17-3 halftime advantage. The sophomore opened the scoring on a 95-yard puntreturn - the fifth punt return touchdown of his career, then, after a 46-yard field goal from the ever-reliable

Tom Schneider, Jackson took a short Nate Longshore delivery and burst pastthe defense for a 62-yard score.

However, the second half was a different story as Arizona kept itself in thegame and chipped away at the Bears’ advantage. After a third-quarter scoremade it 17-10, the Wildcats methodically moved the ball downfield onceagain, scoring on another short run early in the fourth on a drive that featuredflagged interceptions by Bernard Hicks and Daymeion Hughes.

With the score knotted at 17, Arizona took the lead for good on a 39-yardinterception return. Cal nearly answered quickly as Longshore found LavelleHawkins, but Hawkins could not keep his feet into the end zone, falling at theone. After three unsuccessful tries at the TD, Cal had to settle for anotherSchneider field goal.

Cal had one final opportunity, but a tipped Longshore pass was interceptedto clinch the upset victory for Arizona.

Jackson finished with 285 all-purpose yards, while Marshawn Lynch ran for102 yards - his school-record 16th 100-yard game, which also pushed him over1,000 yards for the season.

LOS ANGELES - Twenty minutes from the RoseBowl. The California Golden Bears went toe-to-toe withthe USC Trojans for over three quarters, but USC useda pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to foil Cal’s hopesfor its first Rose Bowl since 1959. Instead, USC won 23-9 and captured the Pac-10 championship for the fifthstraight season.

Nate Longshore, who completed 17-of-38 passes for176 yards in the loss, directed the go-ahead drive in thesecond quarter for the Golden Bears. After pinpointpasses to DeSean Jackson (36 yards) and Robert Jordan(29 yards), Longshore found Lavelle Hawkins, whomanaged to hold on despite a brutal sandwich from two

Trojan defenders, for a six-yard score and a 9-6 advantage. The two defenses held strong until late in the third quarter with just over 19

minutes to play, when USC connected on a 49-yard field goal to knot the gameat nine.

In the fourth quarter, Cal could not get clicking and USC’s offense, bolsteredby a vocal sellout crowd of 91,672, began to make big plays. Trojan quarterbackJohn David Booty completed 18-of-31 passes for 238 yards, including touchdownstrikes of 25 yards to Dwayne Jarrett and 37 yards to Steve Smith on a back-breaking fourth-down conversion with 8:23 to go.

Cal had a pair of touchdowns called back during the game. In the first quarter, linebacker Mickey Pimentel returned an apparent fumble over 80 yards to theend zone, but the play was ruled an incomplete pass. Late in the fourth quarter,Marshawn Lynch appeared to have a 70-yard touchdown run, but replay showedhis knee had been down after nine yards.

After falling behind by a field goal in the first quarter, Cal had a hugedefensive play from Brandon Mebane, who burst through the Trojan line to stuffthe running back in the end zone for the Bears’ first safety since 2002.

BERKELEY - Tom Schneider booted four field goalsand the California defense held Stanford to just 269yards as the Golden Bears upended the Cardinal, 26-17, in the 109th edition of the Big Game before a sold-out Memorial Stadium. It was the fifth straight win in therivalry for Cal, which closed the season undefeated athome, and it was also the Bears’ third sellout of the year,a first in over 50 years.

The Bear offense struggled to click on the cold, blustery day, but Schneider continued his outstandingseason and a hard-hitting defense led by Zack Follettand Desmond Bishop kept Stanford from the lead.

Schneider opened the scoring in the first quarter witha 55-yard field goal to match the Cal school record. After Stanford knotted thegame at three, another Schneider three-pointer put the Bears on top for good. Then with 2:32 to go in the half, a big hit by Follett forced a fumble which wasscooped up by Syd’Quan Thompson and escorted into the end zone, despitethe fact the freshman lost his shoe to a would-be tackler.

Stanford did not go away however, using a big kickoff return to set up a TDof its own, making it 13-10 at the break.

The two teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter with Cal quarterbackNate Longshore delivering a perfect pass to Lavelle Hawkins for a 32-yard scorebefore Stanford quickly answered with a deep ball of its own.

However, down the stretch, it was the Cal defense and Schneider wrappingthings up. The junior placekicker booted two more field goals while the GoldenBears held the Cardinal to just nine yards of offense in the fourth quarter.

DeSean Jackson was the offensive star, racking up 127 yards on sevencatches, despite the swirling winds.

SAN DIEGO - The California Golden Bears cruisedto a 45-10 victory over Big XII opponent, Texas A&M,in the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl. In fact the 35-point winwas the biggest margin of victory for Cal in bowl gamehistory. The win also gave the Bears their third in theirlast four bowl games played.

In what would be his final game in a Bear uniform, junior Marshawn Lynch rushed for 111 yards and twotouchdowns, and was selected as the game’s co-offensiveMVP. Teammate Justin Forsett, who was the game’sleading rusher with 124 yards, also found the endzonein the fourth quarter on an eight-yard dash. The 100-yard performances by Lynch and Forsett marked the first

time Cal had two 100-yard rushers since Oct. 22, 2005, when Lynch and Forsetteach ran for over 100 yards against Washington State.

Quarterback Nate Longshore had a sound statistical game completing 19-of-24 passes for 235 yards and a touchdown, en route to co-offensive MVPhonors. Longshore also scored a touchdown on the ground when he plungedinto the endzone from one yard out in the first quarter to even the score at 7-7.

Not to be overshadowed by the offense, linebacker Desmond Bishoprecorded a game-high 12 tackles (8 solo/4 asst) to earn Defensive MVP honors.

The Cal defensive unit was spectacular, allowing just 10 points, includinga shutout in the second half. San Diego native, Mickey Pimentel recorded seventackles, while Eddie Young intercepted a Ty Branyon pass (his first career INT)in the fourth quarter highlighting the other top defensive notables.
