2013 NIIW/TIM Planning in Full Swing

National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW) and Toddler ImmunizationMonth (TIM) are right around the corner, and planning for both events is in fullswing. NIIW is an annual observance to highlight the importance of protectinginfants from vaccine-preventable diseases and celebrate the achievements ofimmunization programs and their partners in promoting healthy communities. This year, NIIW will be observed nationally April 20-27. California observesToddler Immunization Month in the month of May. The Immunization Branch,California Immunization Coalition, local health departments, and communitypartners are planning local events and seeking opportunities to bring mediaattention to this life-saving cause. This is a great opportunity to step up efforts toprotect children against vaccine-preventable diseases and give them a healthystart in life. The NIIW theme, "Immunization. Power to Protect," serves as areminder of how effective vaccines are in protecting children. If you would likeinformation on the campaign, please contact Kerdlyn Henry [email protected].

Preteen Vaccine Week Highlights Recommended Shots

California's Preteen Vaccine Week, celebrated February 10-16, 2013, helpedpromote adolescent vaccines and the importance of the preteen doctor visitstatewide. Approximately 22 health departments, coalitions, and health plans ledinitiatives aiming to increase immunization rates among 11-and 12-year-olds.Many distributed health education materials to their local healthcare providers, schools districts, school nurses, and community organizations. Others hostedimmunization clinics at schools or used social media and press releases to getmore families of preteens to vaccinate their 11-and 12-year-olds. A detailedreport with local activities will be available soon, upon request. For moreinformation, please contact [email protected].

Shoo The Flu Through the Shoo The Flu program, nearly 5,000 San Francisco Bay Areachildren ages 4 through 18 received a free flu shot. The Bay Area Shoo The Fluinitiative was born when Larry and Lucy Page of the Page Family Foundationmade a commitment to improving thehealth of the community. Theyunderstand that vaccinating childrennot only improves children's health, italso dramatically reduces the risk ofthe flu spreading to adults. Shoo the Flu was launched to coincidewith National Influenza Vaccination Week, December 2-8, and the campaign ranthrough January, 2013. Participating San Francisco Bay Area Target Pharmacy®locations administered the free Shoo The Flu vaccinations. Check shootheflu.orgfor updates on Shoo the Flu for the 2013-14 flu season.

"This Close" to Ending Polio Many of our parents, and indeed most grandparents, remember the threat of

polio. Fortunately, vaccines ended the threat of polio in America, and in much the world. In the past 25 years, thanks to a world-wideeffort, the number of cases worldwide is down more than99%. So why are still talking about it? The fact is thatkeeping the number of cases low cannot be sustainedyear after year. Polio will make a comeback if it is noteradicated. To capitalize on the current momentum, folksfrom around the world are working together and letting theworld community know that we are "this close" toeradicating it. Join Rotarians, CDC, UNICEF, WHO,athletes, CEOs, community health workers, andthousands of others in ending this terrible disease. Watch the 'worlds largestcommercial' (you might see some folks you know !). There are many ways to getinvolved. Visitwww.EndPolioNow.org and www.polioeradication.org more information and ideas.

Global Ban on Mercury Grants Exception to Thimerosal-

Containing Vaccines (The following is excerpted from AAP News, Jan. 2013)

In January, 2013, after years of negotiations, the United Nations EnvironmentProgram (UNEP) hosted a convention to addressthe use of mercury in products and industrialprocesses. The outcome was a newly signedinternational treaty. During the discussions, numerous medical organizations, including the AAP, noted that thimerosalshould be exempt from the treaty to avoid disrupting global immunization efforts.Thimerosal is a preservative used in multi-dose vaccine vials. The treatyexemption was viewed as a positive step by many vaccine experts. "This is abold stroke for protecting children," said Walt Orenstein, M.D., FAAP, of theEmory Vaccine Center. He credited the scientific community for providing thebackground information and showing how removing thimerosal from vaccines, thus requiring single-dose packaging, "could potentially be very harmful ... We inthe United States take for granted the refrigerator space and freezer space thatwe have, and so single-dose packaging, for example, has not been a big issue ...

But when you look at the poor countries of the world who are very strapped, having to go from a 10-dose vial to 10 one-dose vials is a big, big stress on theirrefrigeration capacity." Read the AAP News article athttp://aapnews.aappublications.org/content/early/2012/12/17/aapnews.20121217-1.
