PerthPerth is the capital and largest city of the Australian state of Western Australia. It is the fourth most populous city in Australia, with an estimated population of 1.97 million living in Greater Perth.

Before it was Perth it was Boorloo. Boorloo formed part of Mooro, the tribal lands of Yellagonga, whose group was one of several who lived around the Swan River, known as the Whadjug. The Whadjug was a part of the greater group of 13 or so dialect groupings which comprised of the south west socio-linguistic block still known today as Noongar (The People).

Perth is the most isolated city in the world, with its closest city being Adelaide and that’s over 2,200km away.

If WA were to be a country in its own right, it would be in the world’s top 10 for size.

General Notes Dr Deepak Bhatia - India

Dr Deepak Bhatia is an Orthopaedic Surgeon with additional subspecialty training in shoulder,elbow and wrist surgery. He completed his orthopaedic surgical training at the prestigious King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in Mumbai. He is fellowship trained in arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder and upper limb at leading international institutes in Belgium, South Africa, and Australia. He is currently an Asst. Professor in orthopaedic surgery at Seth GS Medical College and KEM hospital, and a shoulder and upper limb surgeon at Sportsmed Mumbai. Dr Bhatia is actively involved in research and has more than 80 international publications on shoulder surgery in leading scientific journals. He is the Co-Editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Shoulder Surgery, and is a founding member and current Secretary of the Shoulder and Elbow Society of India. He has lectured and performed live surgeries at national and international shoulder conferences/courses, and is listed in “Marquis Who’s Who in the World” for his academic achievements in the field of shoulder surgery. Dr Deepak Bhatia has developed several original surgical techniques for treating various shoulder problems. These techniques have been published in some of the best international journals, and are currently used by shoulder surgeons around the world.

Professor Roger Emery - UKProfessor Emery studied medicine at St. Thomas’s Hospital Medical School, London, graduating in 1979. He trained in London, Cambridge and Hong Kong. He was awarded a Wellcome Surgical Fellowship at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology and wrote his master’s thesis on “Metabolic Studies on Normal and Osteoporotic Bone” in 1987. He was awarded the Zimmer Travelling Fellowship by the British Orthopaedic Association in 1989 and the first SECEC/ ASES Travelling Fellowship by the European Society for Surgery of the Shoulder and Elbow in 1993. In 1991, he was appointed consultant orthopaedic surgeon and honorary Senior Lecturer at the Central Middlesex Hospital and moved to St Mary’s Hospital in 1993. His clinical interest is shoulder and elbow surgery and created an active clinical group at St Mary’s Hospital, London. He has served in many roles including President of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society, International Editor of the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and ex-officio Member the International Board of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. He is currently the President of the Société Européenne pour Chirurgie de l’Epaule et du Coude (SECEC) and sits on the Board of Trustees of the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.

Dr John Sperling - USADr. John Sperling graduated from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He completed his residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and a Fellowship for Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at The Hospital for Special Surgery. Doctor Sperling’s practice focuses on the treatment of shoulder pathology. In addition, he has completed an MBA in medical group management. He currently is on Staff at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr Sperling is a committee member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the International Congress for Joint Reconstruction and is on the Board of Directors for the International Society of Orthopaedic Centres (ISOC).

Papers received after this date will not be accepted for inclusion in this year’s program.

All abstracts submitted are subject to review by the Scientific Program Committee. Once abstracts have been accepted for presentation, no changes will be accepted to their content.

Guest PresentersProfessor Adam Watts - UKProfessor Adam Watts is a Consultant Hand & Upper Limb Surgeon. He is a Fellowship Trained Hand and Upper Limb Surgeon on the Specialist Register. His practice is predominantly surgery of the elbow, wrist and hand, but includes shoulder surgery. He specialises in arthroscopic and endoscopic surgery, joint replacement and trauma reconstruction surgery. He is Research and Governance Lead for the Upper Limb Unit at Wrightington Hospital. He is co-convenor of the Wrightington Elbow Symposium. Adam trained in London and Edinburgh, with specialist Fellowship training in Australia and at Wrightington Hospital. His research areas include anatomy, elbow replacement and elbow instability.

Dr Matthias Zumstein - SwitzerlandDr Matthias Zumstein is Vice Chairman of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at the University Hospital, Inselspital in Bern Switzerland. He is the Section Head or Shoulder, Elbow and Sports Medicine at Sportsclinic #1, Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology. Dr Zumstein is a board member of SECEC (European Society for Surgery of the Shoulder and the Elbow) and Swiss Orthopaedics.
