CALL FOR ARTWORK:STREET BANNERS FOR GRANVILLE AND HASTINGS WEST

Introduction

To ensure downtown Vancouver has a distinctive sense of place and arrival, the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association (DVBIA) collaborates with organizations and creative individuals to identify opportunities to beautify and promote the downtown identity.

The DVBIA promotes various streets and districts by installing street banners every two years. This year Granville and West Hastings streets will receive new designs.

The DVBIA believes it’s important that the people who work, live and play in downtown Vancouver have a say in how their downtown looks and feels. Therefore, the DVBIA is extending the opportunity to local artists and designers to be featured on the city streets through an open call for artwork.

Banner Design Criteria

Mandatory Elements

• Banners must include the name of the street as “Granville” or “Hastings West”. Note: Hastings West is the official district name.

• The banner design should reflect the nature or character of the street in some way.• No small text, corporate logos, advertising, or inappropriate content or language.

Best Practices

• Impactful designs are those that contain bright colours that pop and contrasting colour combinations.• Keep it simple.• Consider the scale when the banner is erected and displayed as small details can be lost. • Try integrating white into your design as this colour is picked up nicely when the sun shines through it. • Banners will be printed on one side only; therefore, the design will be reversed on the rearview. • Consider the longevity of the design, as they will remain up for two years.
