Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Australian women, with one in 9 Australian women diagnosed before the age of 85. October is Australia’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to show support for women and families per-sonally affected by breast cancer.

More than 14,000 women and 105 men are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer this year alone. Thirty-eight Australian women are diagnosed every day and while survival rates continue to improve – today more than 88 per cent of women survive five years after diagnosis – there is still a long way to go.

Despite improvements in diagnosis, treatment and manage-ment in recent decades, sadly seven Australian women will lose their lives to breast cancer each day - more than 2,700 each year. Raising awareness is an important part of reducing the impact of breast cancer on Australian women and families.

On Thursday 18 October St Patrick’s staff came together to enjoy a Pink Cupcake morning tea hosted by the Ministry Team. Students helped to cut and pin the pink ribbons that every staff member received during morning briefing. Many staff mem-bers baked cupcakes and these were shared at morning tea. We prayer for those women afflicted by this illness and offers this prayer: We pray for those who are now ill. Source of Life, we pray: Heal them. We pray for those who are affected by illness, anguish and pain. Heal them. Grant courage to those whose bodies, holy proof of Your cre-ative goodness, are violated by illness and the pain of illness. Encourage them. Grant strength and compassion to families and friends who give their loving care, support and help to overcome despair. Strengthen them. Grant wisdom to those who probe the deepest complexities of your world as they labour in the search for treatment and cures. Inspire them. Grant clarity of vision and strength of purpose to the leaders of our institutions and our government. May they be moved to act with justice and compassion and find the courage to overcome fear and hatred. Guide them and bless us all. Amen

Mr Chris Campbell AP Curriculum

A reflection on the variety of commitments in Term 4 indi-cates that we will all be particularly busy place next week, House Choir, Celebration of Excellence of and so on. Hence, the key to success between now and the end of the year will be organisation. Everyone knows that effective organisation is the key to a positive outcome and yet it is this organisation which is of-ten the most challenging for students. We all know the val-ue of it, but at times we let our attention to detail slip. The result of this can lead to students feeling totally over-whelmed. The most obvious way of being proactive is to draw up a study plan. At times, however, students can lack the skill to execute such a plan. The student diary contains a study tem-plate. As well there are many templates online. These types of resources can be an excellent way to guide our thinking in drawing up a practical study map. The first step in constructing a study guide is to list each subject the student has, along with the assessment re-quired for each subject. Students can check that they have itemised this correctly by either checking against the assess-ment calendar or consulting their teachers. It is essential that students are clearly aware of the assessment require-ments for the term.

The next consideration should be to nominate how many hours each day which can be allocated to assignment and revision work. By this I am referring to work above and be-yond daily homework tasks. At this stage of the year, stu-dents need to be factoring a significant time commitment on the weekends as well as during the week. It is also important to distinguish between time spent com-pleting assignments and time spent studying for exams. Students must be careful not to make the mistake of spend-ing the majority of their time on assignments at the expense of exam revision when often the weighting of the exam is at least the equal of the assignment. Hence, be sure to include revision time for each subject. This can be simple to organ-ise. Look back through class notes and/or text books and redo samples of activities or tasks completed throughout the term. It is hard work and at times stressful. Effective organisation is a positive way to deal with the pressure that the boys will definitely face.

Mr Stanley Carr Indigenous Liaison Officer

St Pat’s BBQ for Uncle Peter Bird

Uncle Peter Bird is St Patrick’s College Aboriginal Elder from The Turrbal people, who are the custodians of the land on which the school is built. He is an important figure in our school community who advises on Indigenous protocols and acts as a mentor to our Indigenous young men.

We decided that it was important that our Indigenous stu-dents had the opportunity to meet Uncle Peter and get to know our elder, so we invited students and their parents to a BBQ planned to be held in the park across the road on the first Thursday of Term 4. Our plan was also to introduce our fami-lies to Ms Brooke McInnes our ESL teacher and Joe Kadel our Indigenous Teacher Aide.

Unfortunately the weather didn’t allow that but we did enjoy

each other’s company in the pool area under cover. Many students and their parents attended as did our remote Indigenous students who were especially interested in meet-ing Uncle Peter and swapping stories and histories.

I am hoping that this will be a regular event and that it will give Uncle Peter, our students and their parents an opportunity to understand their culture.

Thanks to Mr Matt Hawkins for his support and leadership, Ms Helen Righetti for her assistance in organising the food, Mr Luke Donatini for allowing us to use the pool facilities.

Orientation Evening The Callan Centre was full Monday night with families here for the 2013 Orientation Evening. We welcomed 250 new students and families into the St. Patrick’s community. I would like to thank all the current parents who volunteered to help out on the night. The large number of parents helping at the door, at registration, cooking and serving created a wonderful introduc-tion to St Patrick’s for our new families. I would like to thank the following parents who assisted: Lesley Palmer, Kym Cain, Hele-ne Finegan, Stephanie Ingeri, Dan Greentree, Russell Oakes, Janelle Lakey, Irene Tornabene, Su Gray and Joanne Clements. I was very pleased to see over 160 of our current Year 11 stu-dents attend the night and begin their leadership role. Well done, gentlemen. A special thank you goes to Mrs Fowlie and Mrs Thompson for their enormous efforts in preparing the evening. Leadership 2013 As Dr. Carroll has indicated we have been in process of select-ing our student leaders for 2013. Congratulations to Jacob, Raymundus and Christian on their selection as College Leaders. I have been very impressed with the manner in which the Year 11 students have entered into the leadership process. The strong alignment between staff and student voting indicates the students are focused on the correct attributes required in the process. The process for the selection of House Leaders began today and we will announce the leaders next week. All Year 11 students will attend a compulsory Leadership Retreat from Monday, 19 November to Wednesday, 21 November.

Green and Gold Day Thursday, 25 October Green and Gold Days are an opportunity for students not to wear their school uniform to school. It is an opportunity for students to show their pride by wearing the school colours of green and gold, and is not a free dress day. Students may wear- Clothing that is predominately green and /or gold Plain blue denim shorts or jeans St Patrick’s jerseys/ Team T-Shirts Sandshoes Any clothing with the St Patrick’s logo

Students must not wear Clothing that is not predominately green and /or gold Singlets Thongs / pluggers / sandals No Black Socks or Black T Shirts Normal hair and grooming guidelines apply. Students who have workshop classes on that day must bring their black leath-er school shoes for these classes. We also ask all students to bring a gold coin donation to support a worthy charity selected by the students. Showcase Our Inter-House competition culminates on Thursday 25 November evening with Showcase. It should be a great spectacle with over 1160 students on stage during the night. Please ensure your son knows when and where he is to meet his House Dean and what time his House is performing. We have asked the students to ensure they do not move around the school on the evening but are with their parents.

.AIC BASKETBALL Round 5 saw SPC hosting the always formidable Iona College, three games going to over time and several won/lost by 4 points or less is indicative of the high standard of play at both Colleges. Special mention must go to the U14A team who remain undefeated going into round six and the 15B side who won in overtime with some fantastic individual shooting from Branden Pallier. This weekend is sure to be another challenging round as we host our closest neighbour Padua College. It would be fantastic to see as many SPC boys as possible cheering our seniors on this weekend. I would strongly urge all boys to stay around to support the 1st V and farewell our senior players in their last home game. Please continue to keep the College’s dress standards in mind, at no stage during training or before games is it acceptable for you to wear anything other than SPC apparel, please keep up the great work the majority of students are doing in this respect.

I would like to wish the best of luck to all students from U13 through to 1st V this weekend in our final home game of the season against Padua.

Mr Rob Morris Track & Field

This Friday evening and next Tuesday will see the culmination of many months of preparation and training for over 70 of our Year 8 to 12 students who have participated in this year’s St Patrick’s College Track & Field Program. The majority have devoted time to training sessions several times per week, Friday night lead up carnivals, holiday training and the annual College’s Track & Field Camp. We wish them, the athletes, and their coaches every success. We are confident that they will do themselves, their team, their Col-lege and their parents proud as they stand tall and ‘fight the good fight’ for St Patrick’s at the 2012 AIC Championships.
