Call and Post is a Cleveland based African American Newspaper, it was established
around 1928 by a merger between Cleveland Call 191!" and Cleveland Post 192#"$ %t covers
the social and religious life of African American community, it has always covered the news of
violence on its front page$ %t has been the most influential voice of African Americans in
Cleveland$ %t is &nown as the finest newspaper in country$ 'illiam ($ 'al&er wor&ed hard to
ma&e Call and Post the most influential paper in the country$ %n 19)9 the paper moved from
*$))th street to *$1#)th $ 'ith the passage of time separate editions were established in Cincinnati
and Columbus$
%n 19)9 Call and Post moved to its new offices and began publishing with offset printing,
Call and Post was the first newspaper to use this techni+ue$ Publication of violence incidences on
front page has made Call and Post a successful newspaper$ he violence stories on the front page
of newspaper were balanced by other social and religious news in the paper$ (n the political side
the paper has support from local blac&s and some -epublicans in the National arena$ %n 1981

e/ample there was a riot of 6lac& people in Cleveland the national leaders were unaware of the
fact$ Call and Post made interviews with the people in stri&e, actually the truth was that a 6lac&
person &illed in the police custody and the police officials were trying to hide the truth, it was
Call and Post which revealed the truth to higher officials of the country$ As the higher officials
came to &now the true reason of the stri&e the order of investigation was issued$ After the
investigation it was proved that 6lac& People were only protesting for a true reason, there was an
in4ustice with them$ o Call and Post played its role for the welfare of 6lac& people$ ue to this
effort of Call and Post the police officers involved in the murder were punished, Call and Post
reputation and image rose among the people and 6lac& natives$

authors were more successful in writing about the condition of Negroes than the 6lac& authors$
.e says at that time the boo&s of Negro authors were sold with much more fre+uency than 'hite
authors$
At that time he reconsidered his African heritage with a *uropean upbringing in education and
slavery$ .e saw himself through the eye of others he felt his two>ness, an American, a negro,
two souls, two thoughts$

6lac& population was distinctive because there were segregated residential patterns, racism was
found everywhere even in the organiations, churches and businesses$ he Call and Post helped
the 6lac& community by thriving during this depression$ %t<s *ditor 'illiam ($ 'al&er turned
this paper into the biggest voice of the community$

entertainment with my friends, time passes rapidly when % remain engaged with my friends$ %
have made many good friends here in C?, they often try to help me, they are very &ind and

believe that it is still in e/istence today$ he campaign formed into an annual event and was
planned for improving the appearance of, and lowering crime rate in, inner>city neighborhoods$
he Afro>American also started campaign against the outhern -ailroadDs use of 7im Crow cars,
and fought to get e+ual pay for =arylandDs blac& schoolteachers$ uring 'orld 'ar %%, he Afro>
American stationed many of its reporters in *urope, the Aleutians, Africa, 7apan, and other parts
of the outh Pacific, and provided its readers with first hand coverage of the war$
Although Afro American wor&ed hard for the blac& community, yet Call and Post
performed better than it$ Call and Post went to every corner of 6lac& community to highlight the
problems of 6lac& Community$ (ften Call and Post held interviews with 6lac& people who
faced any &ind of problem of racism$
here was a time when 6lac& people were not allowed to travel with 'hite people it was
Call and Post which highlighted this problem and stood for the right people$ he Afro American
was silent over this issue but Call and Post organied certain interviews and road shows to show
the whole world that 6lac&s cannot travel 'hites, as a result it became the tal& of the town and
6lac&s were given the right to travel with 'hites$
Annual Programs: Call and Post usually organie annual events and programs, it invites the
higher officials of the state and the local 6lac& people$ People find a way to convey their
problems to higher officials on these events$ %t is usually impossible for a common man to
approach to higher authorities easily but such &ind of events and activities provide them a chance
to convey their ideas and thoughts to higher officials$
