CALMUS ENSEMBLE
Homogenität, Präzision, Leichtigkeit und Witz – das zeichnet das Calmus Ensemble aus und macht das Quintett zu einer der erfolgreichsten Vokalgruppen Deutschlands. Die breite Palette an Klangfarben, die Musizierfreude, die die Mu-siker auf der Bühne vermitteln, ihre Klangkultur und ihre abwechslungs- und einfallsreichen Pro-gramme begeistern immer wieder. Damit haben die fünf Leipziger eine ganze Reihe internationa-ler Preise und Wettbewerbe gewonnen – zuletzt den OPUS Klassik 2019 „Beste Chorwerkeinspie-lung“. Mit 50 bis 60 Konzerten im Jahr ist Calmus in ganz Europa und bis zu dreimal jährlich in den USA ein immer wieder gerne gesehener Gast.
Die Repertoirespanne von Calmus ist schier un-begrenzt: geprägt von der Tradition der Thoma-ner und anderer großer deutscher Knabenchöre sind die Sänger natürlich in der Vokalmusik der Renaissance, des Barock und der Romantik zu-hause, aber Musik unserer Zeit ist ihnen ebenfalls ein großes Anliegen. Sie haben über die Jahre zahlreiche neue Kompositionen in Auftrag ge-geben und uraufgeführt, u. a. von Paul Moravec (Pulitzer Price Winner), Mathew Rosenblum, Bernd Franke, Steffen Schleiermacher, Wolfram Buchenberg, Bill Dobbins, Mia Makaroff, Dan Dediu und Harald Banter. Außerdem singen und arrangieren sie gerne Pop, Folk und Jazz, wo-von zahlreiche Notenveröffentlichungen zeugen.
Partnerschaften mit Kollegen wie dem MDR Sinfonieorchester (Weill, Sieben Todsünden), dem Raschèr Saxophone Quartet, der Ham-burger Ratsmusik, der Bigband des Hessischen
Rundfunks, der Capella de la Torre, amarcord („Leipziger Disputation“) oder Elke Heidenreich („Nachtgedanken“) bereichern zusätzlich das Repertoire von Calmus und bereits zwei Projekte verbindet Calmus mit der Lautten Compagney Berlin („BachArkaden“, „Mitten im Leben“).
Einen Teil seiner Zeit widmet Calmus der Nach-wuchsförderung: Unterricht, Workshops und Jurytätigkeiten gehören zu ihrem Alltag, zuhause in Leipzig und unterwegs, u. a. als Artist in Resi-dence beim STIMMEN Festival Lörrach oder bei der Bachwoche Stuttgart, sehr oft auch in den USA. Kein Wunder also, dass Calmus mit der ein-zigartigen Besetzung aus Sopran, Countertenor, Tenor, Bariton und Bass überall auf der Welt im-mer mehr Fans hat.

The ensemble has forged a refi ned sound which few groups achieve. The wide range of sound colors, the joy in performing that musicians con-vey on the concert platform, and their varied and imaginative programs are praised by the press time and time again. These fi ve Leipzig musicians have won a whole string of international prizes and competitions, including the OPUS KLASSIK, ECHO KLASSIK and Supersonic Award, and the reach of their activities is constantly expanding, taking them throughout Europe as well as to North and South America. In 2010 the quintet made its debut at Carnegie Hall, New York.

The musicians are tireless in their quest to dis-cover new repertoire. Shaped by the centuries-old tradition of great German boys’ choirs, they are naturally at home in the vocal music of the Renais-sance, the Baroque and the Romantic. The music of our own time is also a real passion. In all their ventures, there are frequently interesting partner-ships with musicians such as the Lautten Com-pagney Berlin, the Raschèr Saxophone Quartet, Hamburger Ratsmusik and the Frankfurt Radio Bigband. As this often means totally new reper-toire in the area of contemporary music, over the years Calmus has commissioned numerous new works from composers including Bernd Franke,
Steffen Schleiermacher, Wolfram Buchenberg, Mathew Rosenblum, Bill Dobbins, Michael Den-hoff and Harald Banter, and the group has given many world premieres. It goes without saying that they revel in singing pop, folk and jazz, as well as chansons and golden oldies from the 1920s.
Part of their work is devoted to encouraging the up-and-coming generation, so teaching and workshops are part of their regular schedule, both at home in Leipzig and on their travels. It’s no wonder that Calmus, with its unique line-up of soprano, countertenor, tenor, baritone and bass, is gaining more and more fans worldwide.
