Building a

s the Dean of Administration of CALUMS, I would like to ask you to join in the construction of a solid castle where all inhabitants

offer warm and cozy support to other neighbors. This is especially important for the new students who join our school with diverse objectives from different parts of the globe. My appointment with CALUMS was solely based on my strong conviction to build a structure in CALUMS where the students can experience quality human interaction and support for others. I am committed to build the sound castle where everyone in the community feels so safe and comfortable in the process of learning, teaching and interacting through the activities that the school provides.

Personal hygiene, proper mannerism and expression of gratitude to others are all part of what I would like to experience from the students when I meet them in the hall way, classrooms and any corner of the campus. The school can be a laboratory for you to experiment so that you train yourself before getting out to the real world that will not allow you to make mistakes without being penalized. Take a full advantage of CALUMS that may allow your mistakes.

Once the castle of warm and cozy spirit is fully established, the inhabitants are going to feel safe in it and they will continuously revisit the school even after their graduation with much deeper appreciation in the years to come. This is another way to experience the successful

culture that CALUMS built. The school will continue to expand along with every graduate anxious to return for home coming. This is the time when we call CALUMS, The CASTLE WE LIVE.

Passionately yours,

Velina EJ LimDean of Administration

I also encourage faculty and staff to be the model of responsible and responsive individuals to the students. The school will try to provide the best learning atmosphere to the students with quality education and compassionate support for the students. In return we will ask students to fulfill their individual and collective expectations from the university.

Together in 2015

2015 is the year of Sheep. The sheep is known to be gentle in nature and they also furnish warm and cozy fur to others. I would like to experience the nature of the sheep this year in CALUMS while witnessing gentleness and kindness offered to others.

ccasionally, after studying topics such as syntax, phonetics, and lexicon, students in Intensive ELD (English Language Development) go out in the community

to learn about their surroundings. Des-tinations have included the International

Surfing Museum, the Huntington Beach Pier and Main Street, Downtown Disney, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, Napa Rose Restaurant, Storyteller’s Café, Anaheim Public Library, and a local farmers’ market. For each adventure, Jorina Laurin, Intensive ELD in-structor, arranges for an expert to speak to the class and provide interesting history and facts, unknown to many Southern Californians.

FOR INSTANCE:

DISNEY’S GRAND CALIFORNIAN HOTEL & SPA was designed based on architecture from the 19th Century Arts and Crafts movement. The hotel has over 1,000 rooms, with suites accommodating up to 12 adults. Many beautiful pieces of artwork are on display, many of them with a “hidden Mickey.”

GEORGE FREETH (1883-1919) is recognized as the first surfer in the United States (1907). The first two surfboards arrived in Huntington Beach in 1927. The sport didn’t start to become popular in the United States until the 1940s. The current number of surfers in the U.S. is estimated at over 1.7 million*.

THE ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARIES’ history dates back to 1902, now with seven full-service branch-es. Many free services are available, including the download of books on a Kindle. Online access to databases is available to help study for many exams. All services start with a free library card that can be obtained with a photo ID and proof of address.

Other adventures are yet to come for Intensive ELD students.

yler Cope, a Professional Golfer with more than 10 years of experience in the golf industry, recently joined California University of Management and Sciences to

head the Sports Management Department and oversee the academic programs in various concentrations – Taekwondo, Golf and Sports Leadership. Mr. Cope worked in high end golf facilities before joining CALUMS, including Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club (36-hole facility) in Portland, Oregon, The Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort & Spa (36-hole facility) in Palm Springs, CA, and Pelican Hill Golf Club (36-hole facility) in Newport Coast, CA. Also, just before the 2014 ended, Mr. Cope became a Certified Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) Professional in Golf Operations, a prestigious title that only less than 4% of the professional golfers were able to attain.

Page 7: CALUMS Pipeline Winter 2015

What changes have you brought in the Sports Management programs after taking charge as head of the department?

Cope – Right now, I am focusing on improving and updating all the programs offered in the department to be on par with industry standards. We have launched campaigns to promote our program offerings and increase the overall sports management program enrollment to 40 – 60 students. We are also working towards developing a certificate program with the course duration of 6 to 9 months. The certificate program will be offered to students as an introductory level to help strengthen a student’s interest in the business or game of golf.

Could you tell us about your vision for Golf course offered by CALUMS?

Cope – We want our programs to be representative of the curriculum offered by the Professional Golfers’ Association. So to maintain the practical aspect expected by the PGA, we had added swing analysis and club fitting equipment to our facilities. Our vision is to enhance and strengthen the programs, to produce career ready and successful graduates in the industry.

Do you offer any course/class for students from other programs in CALUMS?

Cope – Currently, students who are enrolled in a Bachelor’s level program can take an elective course outside of their program. I would encourage any Bachelor’s level student to enroll in one of our golf classes, assuming there are no prerequisites required for the class being offered. I hope this will encourage more students to participate in an upcoming golf class.

As someone successful in golfing career, what advice could you give to beginners who want to succeed in this industry?

Cope – For beginner level students, my advice to them would be to visit a golf course and talk with people working in the industry. For a person entering the golf industry, there are 3 different career paths available – Teaching, Golf Course Operations and Professional Players. The students can and should choose the path as they desire. I strongly recommend students to put in long hours of practice and dedication towards the game. After gaining playing experience, if they want to work towards a career in the golf industry, they should then enroll in one of the golf programs offered at CALUMS, which will definitely help them complete the PGA courses more easily.

Tell us little bit about your childhood/early years?

Cope – I was born in Southern Oregon. I started playing golf at the age of 7 and was introduced to the game by my father. So I have been playing golf for more than 28 years. I was on my high school golf team and have represented the school in many state level competitions. After high school, I studied aviation and have a Bachelor’s degree in Aviation. I also hold a commercial pilots license and am a certified flight instructor.

What do you like to do in your leisure time?

Cope – I always try and stay active as much as possible. So I like to do things which will keep be active like running, hiking, cycling and also I like to explore and find ways to grow more professionally in golf.

ipeline would like to officially welcome everyone to the year 2015! Another year to gear up for and embark on the exciting opportunities that awaits us.

Albert Einstein said, “I never think of the future – it comes soon enough.” It sounds cliché but it is true; seems like 2014 plunged quickly before we can even relish it. No one even noticed that 2014 is the coming of age year for CALUMS as it celebrates 16th year anniversary. Yup, sixteen years of honing students from around the world. So, before we venture into 2015, lets take a look back to the major highlights in our university last year.

HOME OF FUTURE GLOBAL LEADERS

Over the years, CALUMS remained as an international institution with students coming from nearly 50 countries. Due to globalization, students prefer to study in an environment comprised of different backgrounds, experiences, and cultures. Part of what makes it great to study in CALUMS is students can engage and interact with other foreign nationals to obtain global business perspectives. BULGARIA

The majority of students in CALUMS are looking to further up their career in various fields such as accountancy, business, healthcare, information technology, and sports management. Through the optional Curricular Practical Training (CPT) program attached to MS611 course, students are allowed to gain more experience and share their expertise through off-campus internship. The internship program gives them the opportunity to apply what they learned from school and acquire additional skills.

GI BILL APPROVAL

Last year, the State Approving Agencies (SAA) approved our university for the education and training of the veterans under the GI Bill Benefits. Eligible veterans are entitled for up to $60,000 depending on their GI Bill education benefit level. With CALUMS’ reasonable tuition and fees compared to other schools, veterans can complete their bachelor or master’s degree without getting indebted in heavy student loans.

COMPUTER LABORATORY

In March, new computers were added in the computer lab on the second floor as part of the continuing effort to upgrade the school’s infrastructure. The computer lab in Room 202 now has 30 high-speed computers with the latest operating systems to accommodate more students. The computer lab is used in both business and computer related courses such as Computer Programming, Project Management,

and Business & Economic Forecasting.

SPORTS MANAGEMENT

The Sports Management Department went through significant progress under the new chairperson, Mr. Tyler Cope. All the sports management programs in various concentrations were re-examined and updated to be on par with the industry standards. Room 310 was converted into a premium Golf Swing Analysis studio by adding a high-definition (HDF) camera and putting green as a practice area to effectively evaluate and improve the golf swing technique of the students. Custom club fitting and repair equipments have also been added to ensure each student is using a golf club that properly fits them according to their unique swing style.

STUDENT SERVICES INITIATIVES

In May, Mr. Andrew Press was appointed as the new Student Services Director, leading various activities to promote student engagement and orienting new students to help them integrate in the campus. Mr. Press is also assisting students in their CPT applications and visiting the students at their workplace.

Starting Winter Quarter, students can see Professor Janet Laurin (above) for advising every Tuesday from 2:00pm to 6:30pm at Room 201A. This service is dedicated to empower and improve the student’s wellness. Anyone who wishes to talk privately with Professor Laurin about academic issues or personal concerns can come and see her at the aforementioned schedule. All conversations will be treated as strictly confidential.

CALUMS PORTAL LAUNCH

The CALUMS Portal (app.calums.net) was launched in fall 2014 to better manage student records, courses, and communication between students and faculty. Beginning Winter Quarter 2015, students can pre-register courses to be approved by the Program Director. An online payment feature is in the development stage to speed up the registration process as well. CALUMS Portal will also let the students check and print their grades as soon as their professors post them online. The new app will also simplify the admission process for prospective students from different nationalities.

The first ever Town Hall Meeting was held on November 12, 2014 at the Student Hall to talk about the current issues in our community. Nearly 80 students attended the meeting and raised questions regarding programs offered, course content, faculty, library improvements and other relevant matters in our school. The participation and feedback from the students was overwhelming. Ms. Velina Lim – Dean of Administration, noted down all the students’ concerns; and the responses to each questions were posted on the bulletin boards and emailed to everyone through the Student Services.

FUTURE PLANS

New programs will be added, which will cater to the current demands in the market. The existing courses will be continuously enhanced with the help of instructors’ input and students’ feedback to improve the quality of education. CALUMS is also prepping new Arts & Fashion programs to be launched soon. The new programs will be dedicated in educating students in the fields of arts, graphics, multimedia, interior design, and fashion. Additionally, the Student Hall adjacent to the Library on the 1st floor will be renovated into a multipurpose room to host school related activities, and a place where students can relax and hangout.

Happy Sweet Sixteen to our school! Let’s look forward to more exciting initiatives and wonderful years of producing worldwide leaders.

nowledge in computer security is one of the most sought after skills in the Information Technology job market today. Master of Science in Computer Information Systems (MSCIS) students who wish

to pursue this career path now have the option to select CS 582 – Information Systems Security as an

elective course.

Information Systems Security (CS 582) is an advanced elective course, designed to teach the best practices and effective implementation of computer security systems by looking at the different viewpoints – from the user, the security analyst, the manager, and the hacker. During the course, students will tackle current security topics, data breaches, and also review audit and operational controls discussed in industry governance models such as COBiT or the SANS organization.

From personal computers to large enterprises, no one is spared from the havoc caused

by the continuously evolving computer security threats. As a preventive measure, enterprise security budgets continue to increase each year to preserve the company’s credibility and meet the industry compliance

regulations. Alongside the increase of security budgets is the rising demand for

cyber security professionals. CS 582 aims to give the students a head start by teaching

the art of ethical hacking and concepts of securing an organization.

Malwares, phishing, worms, virus, spam, spyware, keystroke logging, Trojan horse, and Denial-of-Service (DOS); these are just some of the security threats that cyber criminals use to hijack computers and steal personal information or even extort

money.

by Sahithi Jalagam / Professor Mitch Cochran

Page 13: CALUMS Pipeline Winter 2015

CS 582 – Information Systems Security course covers the following topics:

1 Access Control2 Telecommunications and Network Security3 Information Security Governance and Risk Management4 Software Development Security5 Cryptography6 Security, Architecture and Design 7 Operations Security8 Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Planning9 Legal, Regulations, Investigations and Compliance10 Physical or Environmental Security

Taught by one of the finest professors at CALUMS, Mitch Cochran, CS 582 will prepare the students for the widely recognized Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) certification exam administered by International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium (ISC)2. “The course will cover a great deal of materials and could be the hardest course taken in the Masters program,” Mr. Cochran said. “So the student should have taken the pre-requisite courses and will also need to do a significant amount of self-study to successfully pass.”

hanksgiving, which generally falls every fourth Thursday of November, is one of the most celebrated days in the United States. This is a tradition where families and friends get

together for a special turkey meal and give thanks for what they have.

This year, Professor Aileen Wilson-Aus and her Marketing Management class students organized a special trip to the 66th Annual Pilgrim Place Festival — a 2-day Thanksgiving event held every year in Claremont. The purpose of the trip is to introduce the cultural values behind the Thanksgiving tradition to CALUMS’ students.

The class was divided into four teams – Design, Logistics, Announcement and Human Resources. All the teams worked together for 2 weeks and came out with a beautiful flyer, which was distributed to all the classes in the university. The teams even conducted a contest for the students and announced prize money for the most liked “selfies” (taken while at the event) posted at the CalumsFriends Facebook page. Some professors were also kind enough to give extra credit for students who attended the event.

Overall the event was a huge success and around 140 CALUMS students went to the festival. Junsu Shin won the Selfie contest as his photo received 123 likes. Many students mentioned that the festival was very nice and everyone had good fun with their friends and families. The festival was a fun way to come out and experience the true spirit of American Thanksgiving. Thanks to Professor Wilson-Aus for making it happen!

About the Pilgrim Place:Pilgrim Place has been a home to hundreds of religious leaders, including commissioned or ordained missionaries, theological seminary faculty, college professors of religion as well as peace and justice advocates. Every year, the community conducts the Pilgrim Place Festival as a two day event, when others in the community are invited to enjoy and experience the spirit and fun of Pilgrim Place. Entrance to the festival and many activities are free, while others come with a small fee. Proceeds from the sales are used to help the people living in the Pilgrim Place community.
