Summer is already flying by! There is just so much we try to pack into so short of a time. In the midst of all of the fun and work of summer, I hope you will continue to make worship and growing in faith along the Spiritual Growth Pathway a top priority, even when you are out and about. If you are out of town please try to attend church somewhere else and bring me a copy of the worship folder or other publications as I can always learn something from what others are doing. And don’t forget that your continued generosity and faithful giving is essential for you to continue to grow in faith and for Calvary to continue to effectively share the Good News and remain a bright beacon of the hope we have through Jesus Christ…in Clarkston, White Lake, Pontiac, & beyond. Be sure to take a moment this summer to pause and ask, "how am I doing and growing as a child of God? Does my life increasingly reflect the Fruit of the Spirit? Is Jesus showing through more and more as I go about my daily life?" I urge you to take an intentional step of faith growth along the Spiritual Growth Pathway this summer so that you can more fully: ENTER into God's presence; ENGAGE in God's Word and Faith Practices that draw you into a closer relationship with Jesus; be EQUIPPED for living life as Jesus would in your skin serving God and neighbor; EXTEND God's love and saving grace everywhere you go in Clarkston, White Lake and beyond!

Pontiac Campus Dedication Highlights

On Pentecost Sunday, June 8 we dedicated our new Pontiac Campus with these words: “Friends in Christ, today we come together to give thanks to God and to seek God's blessing as we dedicate this community orchard as Calvary's Pontiac Campus, a church campus without walls where we come seeking to be the church together with all those who live in this neighborhood. May all that happens here today and in the days and years ahead be to the praise and glory of God. We begin in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit! Amen.”

Blessed are those who trust in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. They shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots by the stream. It shall not fear when heat comes, and its leaves shall stay green; in the year of drought it is not anxious, and it does not cease to bear fruit. Jeremiah 17:7-8 For thus says the Lord: “Build homes, and plan to stay. Plant gardens, and eat the food they produce. And work for the peace and prosperity of the city where I sent you... Pray to the Lord for it...For surely I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. In those days when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me. I will be found by you,” says the Lord. “I will and restore your fortunes...” Jeremiah 29:4-5, 11-14

…O Lord, send your blessing upon us and upon this Pontiac Campus of Calvary and this community orchard which we set apart today for your honor and glory. Bless all life in this community that it may grow in health and vitality. May the hungry be fed here, may strangers become friends here, may community be grown here. May all who gather in this place bless and be blessed, so that nourished by your love this orchard may benefit all through you amazing grace and all of your good gifts. In Christ’s name, Amen. THANK YOU!!! We are planting about 35 fruit trees, mostly apple but also some pear and plum trees in this first year. A big thanks to those who have already donated and planted trees or donated in other ways:

Tom Grant, Donna & Ron Nitschke, Ann & Rick Tyler, Karen Wenzel, Ben & Barb Pusheck, Betty Anderson and Charlie Robinson, Joyce Butler, Sam & Nola Hall, Mark & Lisa Ratliff, Mark & Julie Scherler, John & Sally Wickstrom, Kenneth & Barbara Petkwitz, Fred & Carol Martus, Maurice & Cheryl Vincent, Janet Modesitt, Janet Anderson, Curt & Krystal Beyerlein, Jonathan & Debbie Heierman, Chris Cortez, Leora Bey, Robert Swanborg and Maria Cottrell, anonymous donor, Robert & Carol Anne Rigonan, Nancy Dangel, David & Janet Barley, Le Anne & Ed Schmidt.

We still have a few of trees that need a sponsor. The is just $100 and which covers the cost of the tree and planting, as well as some ongoing care for the first year in the orchard. Please clearly mark your donation “tree for Pontiac” or give online selecting that option. Of course donations of any amount will help with this ongoing project.

A rain barrel irrigation system has been installed as part of Mitchell McClelland’s Eagle Scout project. The scouts also dug the holes and prepared the area for planting. A big thank you to Mitchell and the scouts of Troop 189. Get More Involved – Care and Upkeep: We are putting together a team of at least 6-8 people to take care of the mowing, weeding and general upkeep on these 3 small parcels of land that compose Calvary’s Pontiac Campus. With a team, each person should only need to serve about once a month. This is a great opportunity to get to know some of the neighbors while making a real difference in caring for this neighborhood. Indicate your interest in being part of the “Pontiac Care Team” on an In Touch Card, by email or phone call. Thanks to John Kelley for heading up the lawn maintenance each week. The vision for our Pontiac Campus and Calvary Community Orchard is for us to be present in the community as the church, rather than to have a traditional church building. We will do this through developing ongoing relationships with our Pontiac neighbors, partnering with other ministries in the area, planting an orchard and maybe someday a garden, sponsoring occasional fun and growth opportunities for neighborhood residents and Calvary members, and more, with the goal of helping to stabilize and revitalize the Ferry Farms neighborhood. We are blessed to be a blessing! For more information or to get involved in any way please contact LeAnne Schmidt, or Pastor Jonathan, or the front office.

June started off with the wonderful celebration and dedication of the Pontiac Campus. The youth families really

pulled together and helped set up, host, and clean up for the BBQ picnic. Thank you to everyone that helped

make it a special day! It was nice to see many youth back at the Ferry Farms site - a place that is near & dear to

Youth Ministry and where we have served each year during the Voice of Truth Mission Trip. Pr. Ken and I

spent the week of June 22 with 13 of our youth at Camp Stony Lake for Confirmation Camp. We had a lot of

fun getting to know each other, and look forward to the next two-years in Confirmation with this great group of

kids. Coming up in mid-July will be the Voice of Truth Mission Trip. We have 25 youth attending - four will

be serving in leadership roles after attending VOT several times, and five in middle school will join us for a one

-day mission trip experience. I can’t wait to report in the August newsletter how the trip impacted the youth.

Calvary is growing disciples through involvement in Youth Ministry!

Self-management: empowerment for

those with chronic illness With God helping you, take your everyday,

ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work,

and walking around life—and place it before God as

an offering. Fix your attention on God, and you

will be changed from the inside out. God himself

will bring out the best in you, developing well-

formed maturity in you.

–Romans 12: 1-2 (The Message) A friend recently invited me to participate in a health

education/ support group called PATH: Personal Action

Toward Health. Although the term “Self-management”

might seem obvious, sometimes a term is used so often and

so freely, that we fail to truly understand its full scope and

potential. I am learning that every person with a chronic

health condition (which is really most of us!) is a self-

manager whether we realize it or not. Some people manage

by withdrawing from life, limiting their activities and

interactions, and allowing their disease to become the center

of their existence. Other people accept, adapt, adjust—and

generally “get on with” life, despite challenges and

setbacks…Lemons and lemonade…Lessons

Learned...Denial of a problem does not make it disappear.

While specifics of a medical situation are in many ways

unique to an individual, there is more commonality in facing

health challenges, than one might expect. Successful coping

and management relates to nutrition, physical activity,

medications, quality of sleep, pain management, combating

social isolation, breathing techniques, understanding

emotions, communication, increasing our ability to focus,

and tapping in to spiritual resources.

The three most important self-management tools are:

Problem-solving, Decision-making, and Action-planning.

Problem-solving begins with defining the problem. This may

seem obvious, but sometimes our own fears and emotions

can cripple us from seeking an accurate medical opinion,

accepting the truth of our situation, and establishing a

baseline from which to build a management plan. Trusting

in God, who has our ultimate good in mind, despite

challenging circumstances, can give us courage to take this

first step.

Decision-making involves first gathering data. What are the

options? What are the pros and cons? What resources are

available to me? What are the potential benefits and

obstacles? What are the costs? Is the benefit worth the cost?

Taking action can seem obvious, but translating good

intentions into concrete steps toward a goal, can seem either

overwhelming or exhilarating depending on your attitude.

The motto “Just do it” can help us overcome inertia…and the

biblical promise “I can do all things through Him who gives

me strength.” (Phil 4:16) can launch us to start an exercise

program, embrace a treatment plan, or begin taking baby

steps toward a worthy goal. To formulate a effective specific

action plan, think about the what/ how much/ when/ how

often of the behavior I want to change or implement.

Research has shown that most people change by themselves,

when they are ready. While physicians, counselors, spouses,

and self-help groups can educate, encourage, persuade, nag,

and otherwise try to assist people to change their lifestyle

and habits, most people do so without much help from

others, when they come to an internal realization of their

options. Change is not an all-or-nothing process. It happens

in stages. Most of us think of change as occurring one step

at a time with each step as an improvement over the one

before it. Ideally that might be the case, but in reality, 95%

of people who successfully quite smoking (for example) do

so only after a series of setbacks and relapses. It’s called

being human, and making the choice to “keep on keeping

on.” Effective self-change depends on doing the right things

at the right time for the right reasons most of the time.

It’s not too late! TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) for

both men and women, is meeting at White Lake campus

Fridays 12:45pm—1pm every week.

"My Plate” from Le Anne Schmidt Members of our Boy Scout troop dedicated four days to the installation of the Calvary Community Orchard. One day was spent digging holes, another planting trees and mulching them, another planting more trees and mulching, and still another finishing the landscape. The park made a nice opportunity for grilling hot dogs for lunch. During the lunch, a neighbor lady who has attended Voice of Truth barbecues stopped to see if it was the same group. She was invited to join them for lunch (Thanks for such a great Christian reception, guys!). Then she waited. After a minute, she asked if someone was going to make her a plate, so they did. When she had gone, there was discussion of how curious it was for her to expect someone to make her a plate, as if they were to wait on her. On the way home, the discussion came around to the reality of the situation, thanks to some of the boys who had volunteered at soup kitchens. She didn't expect someone to wait on her; she was humbly waiting for only what she was given. It was not her intention to reach in and grab more than whatever share they were willing to offer her. A free meal, in her experience, wasn't done “family style.”

I don’t know if you noticed but we moved from winter to summer very quickly this year. But if I had to choose I’d choose summer! The summer brings with it confirmation camp, the Voice of Truth Mission Trip, youth adventure trip and many other summer activities. I also get to spend time in the White Lake Commu-nity Garden and celebrating the 4th of July at the Clarkston Parade. The wonderful thing about many of these things is that I get to do them with the people of God at Calvary and our amazing staff. I would like to invite you to consider being a part of these ministries. There are plenty of opportunities to serve in various capacities in each of them. Here’s a few examples of how you can serve in them:

It’s not too late to be a chaperone for the Voice of Truth mission trip

We have other needs for this too so please contact me if you’re interested

Harvesting has begun in the community garden

We need folks to be a part of the parade on the 4th

We are looking for youth leaders to be a part of youth ministry this year I have enjoyed leading the sermon series on the Holy Spirit this summer, I ask you to consider how the Spirit is calling you to serve in new and profound ways this summer. God’s Peace,

Administration Staff Reconfiguration Many thanks to Cathy Mann for her faithful service as a part-time Administrative Assistant in our front office over the past year. She will be leaving this position at the end of June as we reconfigure and streamline administrative responsibilities. We will especially miss her smile and caring presence on the telephone; however, we look forward to how God will call to Cathy to serve next to build up Calvary’s ministry and extend the Good News into our communities as a volunteer and member of the “priesthood of all believers.” She is blessed to be a blessing!

Community Assistance Coordinator Each year Calvary helps people in need in our community with funds they need for housing, utilities and other bills. We work with other local churches, Open Door, Lighthouse Emergency Services, Neighbor to Neighbor, and St. Vincent DePaul to keep people in their homes with their utility services on. We are in need of a volunteer to work one day at week to help process these calls and the corresponding paperwork.

We use an online management task system to manage the calls, so computer experience is necessary, but we will train you on our system. Staff Contact: Deborah Robitaille

Stewardship Team We would like to thank our members and friends who have recently used Charity Motors to donate a car and designated the proceeds to Calvary. What a great way to donate to an organization in need and benefit your church family at the same time. If you have a vehicle you have considered donating, contact Charity Motors, Inc. and designate the proceeds to Calvary. You can contact Charity Motors at 888-908-CARS Staff Contact: Deborah Robitaille

May the one who receives this shawl be cradled in hope, kept in joy, graced in peace, and wrapped in love.”
