After weeks of restrictions on gatherings, everyone’s hard work on containing COVID-19 is now being rewarded by the re-opening of our beloved Hemingway’s Country Club and all of its many stellar features. It’s the showpiece of our resort and offers so many social opportunities as well as a host of great weekly activities that make life at Caloundra Cay so sweet! Take a walk through, with us...

...AND WE’RE BACK!

CONTACT US

WelcomeThe Sales Team and I are excited to be back in full swing, offering safe private tours through our amazing Hemingway’s Country Club, display homes and the general resort grounds so we can truly showcase what Palm Lake Resort’s over-50s community resort lifestyle is all about. The Sales Team is fully aware of social distancing protocols and we have all the measures (and more!) in place to provide guests with a thorough and safe visit. We are committed to demonstrating to you that a wonderful resort-style community experience is available for everyone to enjoy here at Palm Lake Resort, even under COVID-19 restrictions. In fact, is there anywhere else you’d rather be in these times than within the secure grounds of our gated community, with likeminded neighbours and a truly caring caretaker/management team?

If you’re interested in our Caloundra Cay resort, we have some very impressive new two-storey display homes available to walk through. These prestigious home designs include a designer lift as standard which we would love to show you. Just because you are downsizing does not mean you don’t want some extra room for visiting friends and those family sleepovers. I get told over and over again by prospective buyers that they only want a single-level home, but I have now put three two-storey homes under contract - and it’s all because these buyers have walked through our amazing two-storey displays and realised their potential. These homes definitely do not disappoint. In fact, I always tell my clients that I am just a tour guide - not a salesperson - as Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay really sells itself!

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.” - Steve Jobs

In a first for the Palm Lake Group, Caloundra Cay now offers two-storey home designs complete with an internal elevator as standard. These slick elevators are equal parts convenience and glamour talking point. The first display home with an internal elevator at this location is our Florencia (Villa 161).

At 280sqm (30.14 squares), Florencia offers two bedrooms plus a third multipurpose room, three bathrooms, a sleek kitchen/dining area, two separate indoor living areas, an alfresco entertaining area, two-car garage and that convenient internal elevator (internal stairs also).

From the ground floor, the elevator takes residents up to what can only be described as a second-level sanctuary. This level exudes relaxation. The master bedroom is here at the front of the home, in all its 5.5m x 4.8m glory. From this bedroom heading to the back of the home, residents walk past their cleverly hidden kitchenette and window seat, then continue past their

vast walk-in robe and handy study nook to the light-filled oversized ensuite with double vanities. Alongside the master suite is a second living area – a true ‘retreat’ by name and nature. The home’s second bedroom is also found on this level, to the rear of the home, conveniently alongside a separate bathroom (with toilet).

Everywhere you look in this stellar display home, you see considered Caribbean styling in keeping with the greater resort’s unmistakable and memorable theme. Blonde wood features in wall paneling and on the kitchen island sit perfectly in the light, bright, white interior. Textured finishes in the wallpaper and tiling, for example, contrast with other gloss surfaces and sleek stone benchtops. Combine this all with those hints of greenery through the windows to the landscaping, and residents are whisked away to the tropics in an instant.

What has proven to be a key selling point for this

two-storey, three-bedroom design is the fact that a couple and a third (or even fourth) occupant can live together under the one roof quite comfortably. The dual living areas allow for separate TVs for different viewing requirements. They also provide occupants with plenty of room to relax alone, or together – the choice is theirs. And with three bathrooms, there’s always privacy when it’s needed. Ducted air conditioning, solar power and a local alarm system are the other more hidden details that matter.

Florencia has proven to be the perfect downsizer for those residents who have left an ample family home or even acreage and still need that feeling of space. And, of course, the space that Florencia offers is perfect for when the grandchildren come to stay. And this display home in particular has inspired many to the ultimate luxury lifestyle on offer at Caloundra Cay.

www.caloundracay.com.au

Right across the Palm Lake Group, for more than 40 years, our architecturally designed homes have put residents’ needs first. Up to now, the vast majority of homes have been two-bedroom single-storey dwellings combining open-plan design with functionality. However, Caloundra Cay is taking that award-winning design to the next level. Literally.

If ever there was a poster child for the benefits of downsizing into one of Caloundra Cay’s spacious two-storey abodes, it’s Leeann Turner. Her and husband Bob are living large in their retirement!

HEAD TURNER

For more than 20 years, Leeann and Bob Turner lived a spacious existence. On a six-acre block at Samford, in their own valley, with lush gardens all around and a stream out front, it was the prime way to raise two active young boys. They had a pool, tennis court and ample space to even house two sets of parents over the years. But life happens, times change, people pass by and move on. And so it became time for the Turners to do so as well.An advertisement on TV originally brought them to Palm Lake Resort Beachmere Bay but it was fate that ultimately lead them to Caloundra Cay’s two-storey Florencia home that they would fall in love with.

“I originally thought I wanted an apartment in my retirement,” Leeann recalls. “After all those years on six acres, I didn’t even need one blade of grass!”

But, being used to the space of their sprawling family home and that huge block, it was the large two-storey Florencia that made them feel at peace with their decision to uproot and downsize at the start of 2020. As Leeann jokes, the upstairs retreat (with its own living area and kitchenette) means she could “camp up there and never come down!”. Likewise, the downstairs bedroom, main kitchen and

ample living space mean that you could live quite independently on either ground or upstairs levels. The extra bedrooms mean her kids and the grandies can stay over. And she even rates the stairs as a brilliant way to exercise (she’ll knock out a few sets of stair climbs during TV ad breaks!). There’s no doubt this active couple have also really embraced community life. They both enjoy lawn bowls and tenpin bowling and love to go to the resort movie cinema. Leeann is also enjoying aqua aerobics, Pilates, Mah-jong and other card games and also wants to start dancersize classes ASAP. Phew!

“Moving to Caloundra Cay has been the very best decision we’ve ever made in our whole married life,” Leeann gushes. “It took me a long time to convince Bob to move into a lifestyle community but now that we are here, I can never find him – he’s always at bowls or up the street having a chat!

“Moving here has been like joining in that movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding – there are loads of parties and there’s always something going on. You really couldn’t make the amount of friendships that we have, in the same amount of time, at this stage of your life, in a normal suburban street!”

Downsizing your family home doesn’t mean giving up on a back-yard that is the envy of your visitors. You’ve just got to think a little more creatively. Whether you’re planning to entertain family and friends out there or just want to create an oa-sis for yourself, there are so many ways to easily take a compact backyard to the next level.

Our newest Palm Lake Resort homes are filled to the brim with luxury fittings and finishes as well as clever design elements that make them such coveted and comfortable abodes. But even in our low-maintenance downsizers, don’t think you can’t extend their awesomeness beyond the internal walls – there’s a brilliant backyard just waiting for your creative touch! And if there’s one state of our country that offers a climate for backyard bliss, it’s Queensland. Here are some ways to capitalise on your Palm Lake Resort home’s backyard space and make it an area that you and your visitors enjoy spending time in:

GO GREEN It’s the obvious thing but a lush, green garden is ever so welcoming. Speak to your local nursery staff about what types of plants suit your home’s position (closely observe how the sun falls on your various garden beds before you head to the nursery) and also take into account how green your thumb actually is. Choose hardy plants if you’re a plant newbie, to avoid disappointment! A simple irrigation system is worth the expense when setting up your garden – many systems can be controlled via an app on your smartphone when you’re away on holidays. Layering your plants is also important – choose a few taller feature specimens, add mid-level lushness and then also consider groundcovers for full effect. Choosing a few key varieties and planting them enmasse can have greater impact than a random assortment of loads of different plants. When done, mulching your garden beds is equal parts function and form, finishing off the project neatly.

GAME ON You don’t need a huge backyard to have a huge amount of backyard fun – in fact, there is a whole range of yard-friendly games on the market. Classic Bocce can’t be beaten. All you need is a Bocce set and you’re on your way! Lawn bowls lovers will love Bocce as the objective is similar: get your team’s balls closer to the pallino (the first ball put into play) than the other team’s. Alternatively, you may want to invest in a Finska set. This game involves throwing a wooden block at a cluster of 12 wooden cylinders, which are marked with the numbers one to 12. Your score is based on the total of the numbers on the cylinders you knock over. The first to exactly 50 points wins,

but if ‘accidentally’ you score above 50, your score drops back to 25 and you start accumulating points again. You can even seek out jumbo backyard versions of those classic indoor family games like Jenga, chess and Yahtzee.

GROW YOUR OWN A small vegetable patch can reap big rewards, especially when it comes to the pride felt when eating your own homegrown produce. Even the smallest of garden beds can be utilised for a veggie patch or you could group together a few larger decorator pots filled with premium potting mix. Lettuce is an easy veg to grow that is also quick to reach harvest. There are also many dwarf tomato varieties that grow to roughly 50cm, which is prefect for a small veggie patch. Shallots, French beans and spinach are compact growers. Beetroot and onions don’t take up too much space and are fun for the kids to dig up when mature. Snow peas will only need a small climbing frame from Bunnings to produce glorious results. Preparing your ground is key – use rich composted soil. Water and fertilise regularly for fast results. This is one project that’s perfect to share with the grandies – for the educational aspects as well as the bonding. And it’s always good to work with your likeminded neighbours to ensure a wide variety of produce is grown which can then be shared around.

FROM THE CARETAKERS

We are halfway to Christmas and looking forward to all the extra events in the pipeline that will make up for the recent restrictions due to COVID-19. Our clubhouses are open and it is wonderful to see all our residents back enjoying everything Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay has to offer. The Milon gym is taking a massive workout with new residents being inducted into the gym and our regulars enjoy their daily physical workout. Our cards, bowls, tenpin, tennis and ukulele groups (and many more) have all started back on a weekly basis. The Caloundra Cay Movie Collective have movies running on Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday nights with some special events running on Saturdays. For our artistic and creative residents, we have art and handmade card classes now on offer along with our knitter and sewing groups.

The winter woollies have been seen around the resort grounds as residents enjoy their regular walks in our nearby wetlands area on the designated walking tracks. With the cool mornings we are currently enjoying, the view of mist rising up off the lakes in the wetlands area is truly beautiful. Luckily, Ray and I enjoy this view from our very own verandah.

There are currently 107 homes occupied here at Caloundra Cay with 193 residents as of June 30. Our current statistics are 47 per cent males and 53 per cent females with 81 per cent of homes with two occupants and 19 per cent single households.

Take care and stay safe,Ray & Lynn Johnson

WRIGGLING WONDERS If you’ve committed to a veggie patch, another cool addition to a small backyard is a worm farm. For around $150, you can set yourself up with a neat and compact worm farm and all the things you’ll need to support your new little wriggly pets. Worms will compost your kitchen scraps while also producing worm ‘tea’ fertiliser and the richest composted soil for your plants. When a worm farm is working efficiently, there’s no smell. And they will sit unobtrusively in a shady spot in your yard. It’s another one of those backyard beauties that the grandkids will LOVE! And, trust us, your neighbours will want some of your magic worm tea for their gardens too – bottle it up and share it around!

MOVIE MAGIC Recreating the magic of the cinema in your own backyard on a balmy night is as easy as one, two three (and this is a sure-fire way to impress the visiting grandkids!). One: Purchase an inexpensive portable projector. Two: Set up a large white sheet or find a suitable light-coloured external wall. And, three: Add some comfy seating. Your ‘screen’ can be as simple as pegging up a white sheet against a fence or you can go next level and invest in a fancy projector

screen that can stand on its own. You’ve probably got outdoor furniture to shuffle around and utilise, or you can source some outdoor beanbags for the kids. Throw on some snuggly blankets and cushions, and don’t forget the popcorn and choc tops (for extra movie magic), then sit back, relax and enjoy a private screening of your family’s favourite flicks.

GARDEN ART Another way to bring wow factor to your backyard is via garden art. There are endless options but have you considered:• Decorative screens/panels (widely available at

hardware stores) which look great installed against a plain fence or among plants

• Statues and sculptural figures, subtly installed among the greenery for a surprise ‘pop’ of interest

• Water features - the sound of gentle running water is soothing and relaxing

• Paint a feature wall – they aren’t just for inside!

TAKE A SEAT A commonly overlooked element of backyards is seating. Create places to stop and take in the vista you’ve created. The more unexpected, the better. Maybe you can install a bench near your veggie patch that doubles as storage for a few small garden tools? Or position a couple of chairs and a small table to overlook the water feature? Sitting among the plants in your backyard, with the sun on your back, is proven to be amazing therapy.

FIRED UP Some Australians head indoors when the cool weather sets in but you can (and should!) enjoy your outdoor area all year ‘round with the help of a backyard fire pit or brazier. They are readily available from hardware stores, come in many designer styles and are priced from as low as around $80. Find a spot to set up your fire pit with no overhanging branches, fences or other flammable structures in close range. From campfire cinnamon roll-ups to baked potatoes and the simple classic toasted marshmallows - the possibilities are deliciously endless when it comes to cooking things with your firepit. Invite your neighbours around or enjoy the crackling flames in solitude with nothing more than a good red to keep you company. Responsible fire pit owners know that they can only be used when there are no local fire bans. Be sure to check for the latest council updates in your area before firing up.
