STAY A NIGHT

Here’s our pick of the upcoming shows at The Events Centre Caloundra. For more info, visit www.theeventscentre.com.au

Saturday, Sept 14: Ross Noble’s Humournoid. What happens when pure comedy takes human form? What happens when a creature is created and bred to do stand up? Nobody knows because that isn’t a thing. What is a thing is Ross Noble doing a show!

Sunday, Oct 6: Kris Kristofferson and The Strangers. Kris Kristofferson has recorded more than 30 albums and written some of the greatest songs of all time. Music fans will not want to miss the opportunity to see this country music Hall of Fame member perform hits from his songbook.

Thursday, Oct 10: Swan Lake, presented by the Imperial Russian Ballet Company. This masterpiece ballet follows the original storyline however subtle variations have been introduced. Swan Lake crosses the world of magic and mystical creatures with that of the real world. It is a story where the virtues of love and forgiveness in the end conquer evil and betrayal.

Sunday, Oct 27: The King is back (Ben Portsmouth Is Elvis). Ben Portsmouth grew up on a diet of Elvis songs. Ben started his journey as an Elvis tribute artist in 2005. Audiences quickly realised that this was someone with a special talent. Ben looks like Elvis, sings like Elvis and has an on-stage charisma that has audiences believing at times they are watching the King himself.

SHOWS GALORE!

WelcomeWe are counting down the days until we move into our shiny new Sales Office – it’s not even finished and it is already looking amazing (see photo, below). The team is just awaiting the final touches inside and landscaping to be completed before our big move. With the growth of our resort, sections of Stage 4 have also just been released, which is really exciting for our team. These homes will be move-in ready before Christmas so get in quick if you’d like to enjoy the festive season with us!

Our residents and lucky deposit holders recently enjoyed a Christmas in July celebration. It was great to see so many new friendships forming. Many of the deposit holders will have familiar faces to catch up with once their home settles and they make the move into our growing lifestyle resort community. While on the topic of residents, we have formed our first Residents’ Committee here at Caloundra Cay. The committee is a conduit between the resident population and our resort management team, as well as Palm Lake Group head office. We encourage you to keep an ear out for the upcoming meeting dates/times and stay involved. You can check out the members of our inaugural Residents’ Committee on Page 11.

With our activities list growing in line with our community, our resort continues to live up to its reputation for providing a relaxed and luxurious lifestyle. To book an appointment to check out what everyone’s talking about here at Caloundra Cay, freecall our Sales Centre on 1800 55 66 77. We can’t wait to see you here soon!

Every year, when spring hits Toowoomba, the regional city becomes the brightest place in South-East Queensland. Blooms blossom, greenery sprouts and flora reaches towards the sun — that’s right, it’s Carnival of Flowers time and the perfect destination for a weekender – or longer! Running from September 20-29, more than 1100 hectares of public parks and private gardens will be on display. And, they’ll boast more than 180,000 blossoming bulbs and seedlings. The carnival kicks off with a three-day food and wine festival (September 20–22). Our sister location, Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba, will have a float in the Floral Parade on September 21 and many of their resort homes, as well as the resort grounds themselves, will be overflowing with colour as our residents vie for awards in the garden competition. There are also self-drive itineraries available for download from the carnival website. Visit www.tcof.com.au

AROUND THE GROUNDSIf there’s one thing that brings our community together, it’s food. We enjoy great meals together each week in Hemingway’s Country Club for our Residents’ Lunch. It’s held at 12.30pm on Thursdays. Did you know that every home at Caloundra Cay receives one free meal voucher every week? It’s a great excuse to dine with us sometime soon!

HO, HO, HO

WHAT THEY SAY...

“We finally settled on Caloundra Cay after researching similar over 50s resorts in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. Proximity to an airport and essential services was very important to us as we have family scattered over three states. It was also important for us to have caravan storage on site. Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay ticked all our boxes. Leaving our home of 35 years in Melbourne was heart wrenching but once the decision was made, the process of packing up and relocating went very smoothly. Towing the caravan behind us was a mini-holiday in itself as we headed for Queensland. The resort here is amazing: the ambience of Hemingway’s Country Club, the friendliness of other residents, our wonderful caretakers, the great salespeople (Monique, particularly), the beautiful landscaping... The list just goes on and on. It has been an easy transition for us – we’ve continued playing bowls, enjoy the gym and regular fitness classes and catch up with our new-found friends at the weekly lunch and Friday night Happy Hour. We certainly recommend this beautiful resort on the Sunshine Coast!”

Did you know, Palm Lake Resort residents have been among the first in the Southern Hemisphere to experience the health benefits of one of the most technologically advanced electronic fitness training systems in the world – Milon.

Winter is gone which means now is the time to dust off your exercise gear and hit the ground running (literally). In fact, it’s also the perfect time of the year to kick-off a new fitness regime if you haven’t been the fitness-fanatic type before. But, are all forms of exercise created equal?

MILON MAKES FITNESS EASY

Positioning Palm Lake Resort as the leader in luxury health and wellness community lifestyle resorts, Palm Lake Group signed a multi-year deal with Milon to become the German brand’s exclusive client in the retirement sector here in Australia. Milon itself dates back to the late 1960s and is credited with the invention of the first automatic tennis ball-serving machine and has affiliations with Porsche. If you haven’t experienced Milon before, the strength and endurance circuit consists of 12 separate electronically controlled strength and cardio machines. Users simply insert a personalised smart card into each piece of equipment as they progress around the circuit and the card will instantly and automatically adjust the equipment to their individual anatomy and training program. Easy.

Milon Australia MD Marcin Lazinski says residents are encouraged to complete the 17.5-minute circuit three times per week for a balanced, total body training regime. Workout information is collected by cloud-based software so residents can track their health improvements online and the information can also be analysed by the resort PT and even residents’ healthcare providers, if required.

“It’s straightforward, safe and effective, offering whole body training, including your most important muscle - your heart,” Marcin says. “You can’t really get it wrong. Simply insert your card and enjoy the workout.”

Marcin says besides restoring confidence and joy in exercising, the electronic resistance circuit was great for seniors suffering back and joint pain, or cardiovascular disease.

“As we get older we tend to forget we must exercise our muscles; as a general rule of thumb we lose one per cent of muscle mass per year from the age of 35. Exercise can also be used as a form of prevention against obesity, diabetes and osteoporosis – a far more cost effective and attractive proposition than treatment.”

No one leads the health and wellness push more than Palm Lake Resort company founder, Walter Elliott. It was Wal who ‘discovered’ Milon when it first hit his hometown of the Gold Coast.

Wal was interviewed by a newspaper to share his passion for fitness and his enthusiasm for the Milon gym system.

“I just fit my card in and it tells me what I need to do. You do the rounds and the weights change as you go,” Wal says. “Our residents love them.”

Palm Lake Group CEO Manuel Lang is also passionate about ensuring Palm Lake Resort stays at the forefront of health and wellness.

“Palm Lake Resort’s significant investment in this unique and advanced wellness technology is in line with our ongoing commitment to care and ensuring that all Palm Lake Resort residents have the ability to live life to the fullest,” Manuel says.

SPRING INTO WELLNESS

Now that the weather has started to warm up and being outdoors is appealing again, it’s time to shake of the winter hibernation and re-focus on your fitness. Regular exercise has also been shown to positively and profoundly impact your mental health - relieving stress, improving your memory and boosting your overall mood. So, whether it’s been months or days since your last workout, or even if you are a newbie to lycra, there’s no time like the present to spring back into wellness. But, where to start?

“The number one rule is making sure you don’t do too much, too soon,” says Justin Lin, musculoskeletal therapist and principal of the Brisbane Spine Clinic. “Don’t expect to be able to deadlift 200kg – not straight away, at least! – and instead focus on whole body exercises in a relaxing environment.”

If you’re out of practice or brand new to fitness, Justin recommends the following exercises to build strength, balance and cardiovascular fitness:

AQUA AEROBICS, SWIMMING

“Hydrotherapy and other exercise in warm water will help your muscles to relax completely, while also improving your fitness and your balance – which is particularly important for falls prevention,” says Justin. Aqua aerobics classes are held on Tuesdays at 8.30am here at Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay.

YOGA, TAI CHI, PILATES

Justin also recommends focusing on exercises that improve your flexibility if you’re getting back into exercise after a long break. They may also help improve your core stability, which helps you protect your spine. Join in Pilates on Mondays at 8.30am or yoga on Thursdays at 9am.

LAWN BOWLS, TENPIN BOWLS

“The social component of bowls makes it ideal for anyone who is just starting to exercise,” says Justin. “Social interaction has been proven to improve your compliance with exercise, encouraging you to keep at it.” Bowls is also a safe form of exercise that will help with your balance and coordination. Join in a ‘Learn how to play bowls’ class at 1pm each Monday. Games are played from 1pm on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

POWER WALKING

“Power walking can help you challenge your heart rate and push you beyond what you are comfortable with, which will greatly improve your fitness,” says Justin. You can certainly power walk with your dog, however Justin warns against this if your dog is

FROM THE CARETAKERSWelcome to all our new residents. At the time of publication of this newsletter, we have 44 homes occupied with 79 residents. Our current statistics are 47 per cent males and 53 per cent females with 79 per cent of homes occupied by two people and 19 per cent single households.

We were excited to see our state-of-the-art Milon gym up and running, with residents learning to do daily exercise. Check out the stories about Milon and the importance of fitness on Pages 8-9. Our activity classes are also being enjoyed by our residents with Pilates on a Monday, aqua aerobics on Tuesday and yoga on Thursday mornings. Every month we keep adding to the activities available for our residents so keep your eye on the noticeboard and in this newsletter for updates.

London native Janet loves a bit of hustle and bustle – peace and quiet just isn’t her thing. So, when she heard about Palm Lake Resort’s latest venture on the Sunshine Coast – bringing Caribbean-inspired luxury to an exclusive address not far from popular suburbs like Moffat Beach and Currimundi – she knew it was the place for her.

“I’ve lived in the area for ages, so it was very important that I moved somewhere close by,” says Janet. “It meant a lot to me.”

But Janet’s Caloundra Cay dream proved more difficult than she first anticipated. The Lake Kawana apartment she was living in before was “lovely, but lonely” and, as a self-confessed social butterfly, Janet longed to throw herself into community life. There were three agonising years between when Janet first heard about Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay and when she actually moved in. She was waiting with bated breath for construction to finish and then to sell her apartment.

“I was hassling the Sales Team during the whole development process,” Janet says with a laugh. “Then, when it didn’t look like I was going to be

able sell, I was gutted. But someone bought my apartment just in the nick of time – it was fortuitous.”

Janet was the fifth resident to move in, and she hasn’t looked back since that fateful day in October 2018. For as long as she had anticipated this next chapter of her life, Janet admits she didn’t fully appreciate just how great her lifestyle would actually become.

“It’s the best decision I’ve ever made,” she says. “I love my home, and I feel so secure here. I never could have built this myself – you just can’t recreate it, and certainly not for the same price.”

Janet isn’t the only one who loves her new lifestyle – her friends gush over everything from the styling of her home to the on-site facilities, whenever they come to visit from outside the resort.

“One of my friends from Lake Kawana can only say ‘Oh my god!’ when she stops by,” Janet says. “And all of my other friends tell me that I’ve really fallen on my feet.”

Janet has made fast friends out of her Caloundra Cay neighbours, too. A

former banker, she loves socialising over a game of cards (the game ‘Hand and Foot’, in particular, appeals to her “numbers brain”) and she can’t wait to pick up aqua aerobics and bowls again. And when she’s not meeting up with friends outside the resort or mingling with her neighbours over a game of cards, Janet can often be found taking new residents under her wing and showing them the ins and outs of life at Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay.

“The people here are wonderful,” says Janet. “A lot of them come here because they want activities and the fun and the lifestyle, so it’s a really likeminded group of people.”

To have found this community in a stunning central location – Caloundra Cay is just a few kilometres from one of the biggest hospitals in the country, five minutes to the beach and a hop, skip and a jump from the highway – Janet feels like she’s won the jackpot.

“It was incredibly stressful when I thought I was going to have to say goodbye to my dream lifestyle, but I couldn’t be happier that it worked out for me,” says Janet. “It was so worth waiting for!”

‘Lifestyle’ and ‘community’ were two boxes Janet needed to tick in her next big move. She had no idea Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay would deliver all that and more.

too strong for you as excessive pulling may cause a shoulder injury. Don’t forget our group beach walk is held every Monday at 8.30am.

HIT THE GYM

Don’t be afraid of weights and resistance training – Justin says that it is important for bone density amongst over-55s, particularly women. Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay’s Milon gymnasium is the perfect destination. Milon gym training classes are held on Wednesdays at 8am.

GO GOLFING

“While golf is very popular, it can be a double-edged sword if you haven’t mastered the technique,” Justin says. “If you have been coached about your form, golf can be a really good exercise as it trains your core stability and improves your general mobility.” Not to mention, carrying your golf bag and walking between holes helping with your cardiovascular fitness. To check out Pelican Waters Golf Club (part of the Palm Lake Group), join in a lunch there on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from noon.

“We often find that people can become fearful to exercise in their retirement, particularly if they have degeneration in their joints,” says Justin. “But the thing with our body is, if you don’t use it, you lose it. If you maintain good muscle function, you may even hold off joint replacement and other kinds of surgery for a number of years. Don’t be afraid to keep up with regular exercise – the positive effects are amazing!”

TEA TIME

Caloundra Cay’s Biggest Morning Tea event gave us a great reason to enjoy a warm brew, some delicious snacks and the company of likeminded friends, all while raising vital funds for cancer research.
