On the oth-er hand, palay production on upland palay areas increased by 62.92 percent in the first quarter of 2017, to 725 metric tons from 445 metric tons output in the same quarter of last year. Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Camarines Sur celebrated its 4th An-niversary with “Lunch date with Lola” on September 12, 2017 at Villa Marillac Home for the Aged with 12 residents. The office prepared lunch and brought advance Christmas gift for the elderly. The activity started by serving of lunch followed by giving out cup-cakes for dessert and distri-bution of gifts to the 12 wards of the facility. The activity is conducted through the collective efforts of the PSA employees.

This decrease can be attributed to the effects of typhoon Nina in December 2016, as all ecosystems: irrigated, rainfed and upland areas posted a decline of 8.03, 8.91 and 6.36 percent, respectively in its yield in metric tons per hectare. Camarines Sur is still the top palay producer in Bicol Region in the first quarter of 2017 where fifty-three percent of the entire region’s palay production came from this province. T he average farmgate price of palay, other variety fresh was

posted at P14.90/kg during the second quarter 2017, 5.35 percent higher than the average farmgate price of P14.15/kg during the same period in 2016. Likewise, the average farmgate price of greencorn, white in-creased from P16.55/kg to P21.71/kg, an increase of 31.18 percent. On the other hand, the average farmgate price of corn matured, yellow slightly went down from P13.10/kg in 2016 to P12.87/kg in 2017.

F or rootcrops, the average farmgate price went up during

the second quarter of 2017. The price of of gabi tagalog (for sinigang) increased to P16.56/kg this quarter. Likewise, the average farmgate price of sweet potato also increased from P12.41/kg to P19.30/kg.

Data are gathered every month from farmers/ producers/ raisers. Farmgate price is the farmers’ selling prices for their produce at the first point of sale excluding any separately billed transport or delivery charge.

TOTAL VALUE OF CONSTRUCTION INCREASED TO P721.03M IN THE 2ND QUARTER OF 2017

T he total value of constructions from approved building permits

during the second quarter of 2017 amounted to PHP721.03 million, an increase of 53.59 percent from PHP469.45 million recorded during the second quarter of 2016. Total value of residential construction in second quarter of 2017 was estimated at PHP350.74 million with a total floor area of 34,200 square meters, equivalent to an average cost of PHP10,255 per square meter. This figure is 39.65 percent higher than the average cost of PHP7,343 per square me-ter recorded in the same period in 2016. Among residen-tial constructions, single-type houses recorded the most number with 299 constructions or 96.76 percent of the total. Total value of construction for this type was estimated at PHP285.71 million with a total floor area of 27,197 square meters, resulting to

residential constructions with 87 or 19.04 percent, 15 or 3.28 percent for addition constructions, and 46 or 10.07 percent for alteration and repair con-structions.

Of the 35 municipalities and 2 cities in Camarines Sur, Naga City recorded the highest

an average cost of PHP10,505 per square me-ter.

Total value of non-

residential construction in second quarter of 2017 summed-up to PHP306.51 million with a total floor area of 39,481 square meters. This translates to an average cost of PHP7,763 per square meter or an increase of 3.47 percent compared with previ-ous year’s average cost of PHP7,503 per square meter. Commercial-type buildings dominated all other types of non-residential construction with 65.52 percent of the total. Value of construction for this type amounted to PHP165.83 million with a total floor area of 18,952 square meters or an aver-age cost of PHP8,749 per square meter.

The province’s total

number of constructions gen-erated from approved build-ing permits for the second quarter of 2017 totaled to 457. Residential construc-tions recorded the highest share with 309 approved building permits or 67.61 percent share to the total. This was followed by non-

CAMARINES SUR FISH PRODUCTION DECLINE BY 3.16 PERCENT IN 2ND QUARTER 2017

T he results of the Second Quarter 2017 Fisheries Production

Survey (FPS) in Camarines Sur revealed that the fisher-ies production in the province decreased to 19,024.13 met-ric tons this second quarter 2017 from 19,645.56 metric tons or 3.16 percent during the same quarter last year.

From a production of 7,428.85 metric tons last year, the Commercial Fisheries Production decreased to 6,765.88 metric tons for the 2nd Quarter of 2017. Commercial Fisheries Production is composed of the com-bined catch in traditional and LGU-managed fish landing centers. The Philippine Statistics Authority Camarines Sur Provincial Office conducted CRVS Decade Launching program on August 31, 2017, at the Avenue Plaza Hotel, Naga City in cooperation with the Local Civil Registrars Alliance of Camarines Sur, Inc. City/Municipal Civil Registrars and representatives from Local Civil Registry Office in Camarines Sur attended the launching program. The activity includes the

presentation of Vital Statistics, discussion on the Status of Illegitimate Children of Camarines Sur and Civil Registration Updates. After the presentation participants took pictures in the CRVS booth together with PSO Clemente Manaog.

The PSA, as the agency mandated by Republic Act No. 10625 to carry out, enforce and administer civil registration

functions in the country, shall lead all relevant activities that seek to: uphold the continuous and compulsory recording of births, death, marriages and other acts and events

concerning the status of persons; enhance aware-ness on the importance of civil registry documents; and, produce accurate, complete and updated vital statistics.

CORN SITUATION

T otal production in Camarines Sur went up by 16.17 percent to

40,128 metric tons the in first quarter of 2017 compared with the 34,542 metric tons produced in same period last year. The use of high yield-ing hybrid corn varieties was the primary cause of this increase in corn production. By crop type, white corn production was pegged at 7,478 metric tons in the first quarter of 2017. This is 97.05 percent higher than the same quarter of the previous year’s production of 3,795 metric tons. Likewise,

yellow corn production was up by 6.19 percent with 32,650 metric tons pro-duced in the first quarter of 2017 compared with the 2016 first quarter’s production of 30,747 metric tons. Area harvested for corn increased by 3.3 percent to 9,918 hectares from last year’s first quarter record of 9,601 hectares. A noticeable shift to white corn planting was observed. White corn area harvested in the first quarter of 2017 was posted at 2,695 hectares. This is 112.2 percent

higher than the area harvested for white corn (1,270 hectares) in the same period of the previous year. However the yellow corn harvested area declined by 13.3 percent in the first quarter of 2017 in comparison with the same quarter of last year. A difference of 1,108 hectares was recorded from the 8,331 hectares harvested for yellow corn in the first quarter of 2016 to 7,223 hectares of yellow corn harvested in the first quarter of 2017. QUARTERLY SURVEYS CONDUCTED IN THE PROVINCE

Aspe Jr and RO II Neil de la Torre trained two (2) regular employees and three (3) statistical researchers (SRs) at PSA Provincial Office Camarines Sur for the conduct of the July 2017 Labor Force Survey (LFS). The LFS is a quar-terly household survey, aims to provide a quantitative framework for the prepara-tion of plans and formulation of policies affecting the labor market. For this quarter, the 2017 Annual Poverty Indi-cators Survey (APIS) is a rider to the LFS. The APIS provides information on the different indicators related to

poverty. These indicator include socio-economic profile of families and other information that are related to their living conditions; social and economic data that were established to be correlated with poverty and family income which will serve as inputs for the generation of poverty incidence and poverty threshold at the national level. The enumeration period was conducted in July 10-28, 2017 with 388 sample households for LFS and 96 sample households for the 2017 APIS.

the results and required reports before the deadline. CES aims to provide ad-vance indication of con-sumer sentiments for the current and the next quar-ters and the year ahead.

Camarines Sur is also the top corn producer in Bicol Region Corn in the first quarter of 2017 with 40,128 metric tons or 63.6 percent of corn produced from this province. The other 36.4 percent of corn in the region came from the other provinces with Masbate sharing 23.9 percent.

T he average farm-gate price of abaca went up from

P54.98/kg to P59.73/kg. Coconut green young (buko) also posted an increase during the se-cond quarter of 2017 compared with the same quarter in 2016 from P6.82/kg to P8.14/kg. Similarly, the price of co-conut matured moved up from P8.14/kg to P9.08/kg. On the other hand, the price of pilinut with hull went down from P18.59/kg to P14.82/kg during this period.

H ogs for slaughter, backyard registered higher prices during

the second quarter of 2017. From an average price of P91.75/kg in the second quarter of 2016, it went up to P107.53/kg during the same period this year. The average farmgate price of goat for slaughter, backyard, likewise increased from P100.15/kg to P104.68/kg. However, decrease in the price of cattle for slaughter, backyard was noted this quarter.

T he farmgate price of chicken eggs, other breed, backyard,

and duck eggs, backyard increased during the quar-ter. The price of chicken eggs, backyard increased from 5.18/pc to P5.49/pc and duck eggs, backyard slightly increased from P5.65/pc to P5.71/pc.

I n contrast, the price of chicken layer (culls), commercial slightly

decreased from P66.36/kg in the second quarter of 2016 to P64.99/kg during the second quarter of

Landing Centers produced 1,809 metric tons and Tra-ditional Fish Landing Cen-ters yielded 3,974.88, which represents a nega-tive growth rate of 7.40 percent, 11.44 percent and 3.78 percent, respectively. The total Munici-pal Fisheries Production in Camarines Sur regis-tered a slight increase of 0.32 percent for the 2nd Quarter of 2017 as com-pared to the same quarter of 2016. From 6,159.61 metric tons recorded during the same quarter of 2016, the Municipal Fisheries Production increased by 19.46 metric tons to 6,179.07 metric tons for the 2nd Quarter of 2017. Further analysis of the gathered data dur-ing the FPS for the 2nd Quarter of 2017 revealed

that the Marine Municipal Fisheries Production in Camarines Sur posted a negative growth as com-pared to the same quarter of last year. Its output de-clined by 2.54 percent from 5,612.03 metric tons in the second quarter of 2016 to 5,469.23 metric tons during the same quarter this year. The decline in production was attributed by the re-spondents to the decrease in the volume of unloading to warmer sea water caused by extreme heat that resulted in fish move-ment to cooler and deeper portion of the sea. Other respondents also attributed the decrease in production to the high cost of fishing operations. On the other hand, Inland Municipal Fisheries Production registered a significant increase of 23.01

percent for the 2nd Quarter of 2017 as compared to the same period last year. From 574.58 metric tons during the same quarter last year, the Inland Munici-pal Fisheries Production reached 703.84 metric tons this quarter. Survey re-spondents shared that the significant increase is due to the increased number of fishing hours and fishing effort. Similar with the Municipal Fisheries Produc-tion, the Aquaculture Pro-duction in the Province of Camarines Sur registered a slight increase in produc-tion for the 2nd Quarter of 2017. From 6,057.10 metric tons produced during the same quarter of last year, the FPS result indicated that the province was able to produce 6,082.18 metric tons for this quarter.

Furthermore, the FPS results for the 2nd Quarter of 2017 revealed that three (3) out of four (4) culture types under Aqua-culture Fisheries registered negative growth as com-pared to the same quarter of last year. Brackishwater Fishpond registered the biggest negative growth of 59.96 percent as the Brack-ishwater Fishpond Produc-tion went down from 409.62 metric tons to 164.12 metric tons this quarter. Freshwa-ter Fishcage also registered significant decrease of 19.78 percent while Sea-weeds production regis-tered a decrease of 4.60 percent as compared to the same quarter of last year. Conversely, Freshwater Fishpond Production regis-tered a 367.65 percent increase in production.

The other 47 percent of palay in the region came from the other five provinc-es with Albay sharing 15.6 percent of the production.
