Principal’s Word

There is a great deal of research out there that suggests that students who have better attendance in school perform better academically. Good attendance means not only being at school, but being at school on time and being attentive while in the classroom. Students who are able to accomplish these tasks achieve better academically, simply because they are in school and focused. This school year, let’s focus on the clock! 8:20 should be everyone’s goal for getting to school on time. Classes begin at 8:30 so it is important for students to be in their seats and ready to learn by the 8:30 bell.

Hello Cambridge Families, We would like to extend a warm welcome to all new and returning families of Cambridge Elementary. Cambridge PTA has a very exciting year planned for all Cambridge families. We invite you to join us in making a difference in education and helping ensure all children have a positive and rewarding time learning. Our key mission is to be a powerful voice for all children, to be a relevant resource for all families and communities, and be a strong advocate for the education and well-being of every child. We are dedicated to promoting children’s health, well-being, and educational success through strong parent, family, and community involvement. PTA promotes an environment at school where teachers and administrators can do their best work and our students can do their best learning. Additionally, research shows that students whose families are involved in their education have better grades and fewer discipline problems. We are always eager to find more great people, like you, to help us meet this goal.

Wanted: School Reporters and Shutterbugs! If you have an interesting story about a child’s achievement or school event or have great photos, please share it with us and it may get published in an upcoming newsletter. We will try to use as many as we can as space allows. Choose the Greener Option Let us email the newsletter to you, friends and family!! Instead of sending paper copies home with your child, send me your email address and we’ll send it to you electronically (no worries, they will remain confidential). Send to: [email protected]

Teachers do a lot for our kids and sometimes it’s nice to show them how much we appreciate what they do. The Cambridge PTA asked teachers to give us a classroom wish list as well as list some nice little treats (gift ideas) that would be sweet to receive. If you would like to surprise a deserving teacher with donated items or small gifts there are three places you can go to look for ideas:

1. Stop by the new Giving Tree located on the bulletin board across from the art room. Pluck a leaf, purchase the item and gift it to the teacher. Each teacher has two leaves on the tree. Every month or two new leaves will be added throughout the year.

2. Online Wish List for classroom necessities: http://www.teacherlists.com/search/results/school/36742

3. Check with the front office for a comprehensive list that you can take with you.

This is an excellent way to show our appreciation to the teachers and school throughout the year! Thank you for your support!

DID YOU KNOW: The National Safety Council estimates that more than 100,000 automobile crashes each year occur while a driver was texting and driving. As the back-to-school season gets underway, we announce with great pride our support for AT&T's "It Can Wait" no texting while driving campaign. We are asking each of our members to visit AT&T's "It Can Wait" website (www.itcanwait.com) and sign the pledge to never text and drive again. Share with friends and family to continue the #itcanwait movement!

Please, do not text & drive!

Family Fun Nights Needs You!

PTA is looking for help putting together our Family Fun Nights. Do you enjoy helping to organize events? Putting on a party? Socializing with other parents? Then we need you! If you are interested in volunteering for Family Fun Nights please contact Bambi, our VP of Programs at: [email protected]

Mark your calendar: Book Fair: September 17 - 20

Planned activities will include: ♦ Monday (17th) - Couch Potato Day!

Wear your PJ's to school.

♦ Tuesday (18th) - Show us your favorite sport. Wear your favorite sports jersey to school.

♦ Wednesday (19th) – Hat day. Wear a sports Hat (or any hat) to school.

♦ Thursday (20th) - Crazy for All Stars. Wear your hair crazy Day.

♦ Friday (21st) - Show your Belton Spirit. Pirate Spirit Day.

The Cambridge PTA would like to introduce you to our Giving Tree located on the bulletin board across the hall from the art room. This Giving Tree is a wonderful way to give back to your child’s classroom and teacher. Every month or two you will find leaves (or apples, bats, pumpkins, etc) attached to the Giving Tree and on these leaves are “wish list” items. We would like to encourage you to stop by and gently pluck a leaf off of the tree and fill a classroom need or treat a teacher! You may place the item in the teacher’s mailbox as a surprise or send it with your child to school. Each teacher has two leaves on the Giving Tree. This is an excellent way to show our support and appreciation to the teachers and school throughout the year! Update: The giving tree has been a huge success so far! Thanks for your support!! The Giving Tree is brought to you by the Cambridge PTA.

Grand Friends Day – Sept 21 Grandfriends Day is a very special time for young and old. Cambridge welcomes Grandparents and Grand Friends of Cambridge students to join them for breakfast - cost is $2.20 (additional .60 for milk). After a meal together, Grandfriends can spend time in classrooms where students can give tours and introduce them to their teacher. After experiencing the classroom, Grandfriends can share in light refreshments.

Pirate Principle: Sept: Self-Discipline

New this year to the Belton district is to teach students a different character trait each month. This month features self-discipline.

What is self-discipline? To put it simply, it means to be in control of yourself. Self-discipline is the ability to make yourself to do what you know you should do, when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not! Disciplined people know what has to be done and they do it. They don't put it off until later or allow themselves to be easily taken off track. Also, self-discipline is when you take care of certain things without reminders! Hard work and persistence, finishing what you start and thinking before you act are ways of showing self-discipline. It also means self-control and the ability to avoid unhealthy excess to of anything that could lead to negative consequences.

Pirates, practice self-discipline today!

What’s the Word in Third? 3rd Grade News Things are going great in 3rd Grade. We are all looking forward to having a fabulous year with our class. Both students and teachers alike have been learning about our new PBIS system which focuses on praising students for their behavior in school and it seems to be a hit. In reading and writing we are getting things started by introducing students to the reading and writing workshop. Students are understanding the structure of the workshop model and also working on building their

reading and writing stamina which will help them grow as the year progresses. In math we are starting with number systems. Students are learning place value through ten thousand and also working with number order and comparisons of numbers. Finally, students will also be starting their first few spelling lists and working with states of matter in science. As a group, we are all very excited to begin this new year and look forward to making it the best year yet.

As the school year progresses, we encourage you to keep in

I am so excited that school has started again. It’s another year of learning, growing, and creating! Our focus for the first quarter of school is going to be lines and shapes. Some of our students will be focusing on types of lines and shapes, while others will be using both elements to create full compositions. I encourage you to ask your student(s) where they see lines and how lines can help us. For example, there is a broken line down the center of the road. It helps drivers know which side to stay on. Ask the same questions for shapes! As always, I look forward to a great year of creating! Mrs. Sullentrup [email protected]

Art w/ Mrs. Sullentrup Music The music room has become alive with singing and instrument playing. 4th Graders started off the year playing xylophones and boom pipes in class. 3rd graders are reviewing rhythm patterns and learning new music vocabulary through hands on activities and listening. 2nd Graders get to sit on the risers for the first time. They are also reviewing how to have good music listening skills and singing fun songs. 1st Graders are starting to learn basic music vocabulary and playing movement games. Kindergarteners are having fun singing familiar songs and starting to learn about Mozart Mouse and Beethoven Bear who will teach them music skills all year long. It’s been great to see all of my returning students and to meet many new faces. Keep singing! Mrs. McDonald [email protected]

Physical Education is

equally important

because of the

childhood obesity

epidemic in the United

States.

Let’s Get Physical!!! P.E. w/ Mr. Corder!

Hi Belton Pirates! The school year is back in full swing at Cambridge Elementary and a fresh start in PE class has begun. For any who have not already found out, I’m Mr. Corder and I am the new PE teacher. Replacing a legend like Mrs. While is not an easy job to do, but I am excited for the opportunity to be part of the Cambridge family. I am fortunate to be in a position that can make major changes to children’s health and lifestyles in general. Physical Education is critical in schools due to the fact that it is the only subject that acknowledges all four development areas. These areas include cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. Physical Education is equally important because of the childhood obesity epidemic in the United States. Students who can find multiple physical activities they enjoy are much more likely to develop a passion for fitness for a lifetime. Students have already begun learning about how to live a healthy lifestyle. I define a healthy lifestyle as eating healthy, exercising regularly, and not polluting one’s body with drugs and/or alcohol. Working on a healthy lifestyle

begins at home. It is a fact that children are likely to pick up the habits which are observed from their home life. There are many simple ways to work as a family to live healthier. Things such as having healthy options for meals, playing sports, going on nightly walks, and eliminating tobacco use have a major impact on a child’s development.

In our first two weeks of class we have learned about a couple crucial organs to physical fitness including the brain, lungs, and heart. Having a greater understanding of how your body works has a direct connection to increasing fitness. The bulk of the lessons up to this point have been teamwork based. In the opening weeks of the school year I feel it is important for each class to develop respect, trust, and cooperation between one another. Games that have been taught include the hula hoop pass and cross the river. Both games take all members of the group working together to achieve a common goal. Our upcoming unit is Fitness. This unit will include lessons on how to be fit and will teach many fitness moves which once learned can be used for a lifetime.

Reading is a critical component to your child’s education so encourage your child to read. Here are some tips for doing just that:

• When your child is able to, have her read to you. Take turns reading.

• Get a library card for your child (you’ll be amazed at how important they feel to get one!) Go to the library every week and take out several books.

• Be aware of your child's interests and direct your child to related books

• Try to find a series that she really likes and will want to continue reading (such as Junie B. Jones)

• Talk to your child's teacher and ask for suggestions.

• Stay on the side of encouraging rather than nagging if you want your child to read. Nothing puts a child off faster than feeling forced to do something, so be careful.

Taking the time to read with your child(ren) on a regular basis sends an

The Watch D.O.G.S. of Cambridge Elementary would like to welcome everyone who may be new to Cambridge and welcome back everyone returning to our wonderful school. For anyone who is not familiar with the Watch D.O.G.S. program, it is a fantastic volunteer program that all of the students reap the benefits from.

Dads Of Great Students.

The program is designed to create male role models in the lives of students that may not have that benefit. It also allows you to be able to spend a day with your child, volunteering in the classroom, playground, and cafeteria just to name a few. We just kicked off this year with a pizza party on Thursday night, August 30th. Thank you to all who attended and a special thank you to all of the great staff and volunteers who make this event possible. We are always glad to see so many returning faces and, more than ever, we are happy to meet and introduce the program to the new D.O.G.S. who are coming to our school. Life is hectic for most families. Parents and caregivers have work and kids have school. When you add in the elements of after school activities, housework, meal making and carpooling, most of us are on overload. But it still is important to make time and pay attention to physical activity for children, as well as parents, for a number of reasons:

• Activity helps reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, colon cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure

• It helps children and adults control weight • Activity contributes to healthy bones, muscles and joints • It makes you flexible • It improves your mood • It can provide social interaction • It can boost energy

Even more important for students is the fact that physical fitness positively impacts school performance, can improve self-image and promote positive social and emotional growth, all of which make for healthier and better students. In addition, studies have shown that aerobic activity may improve memory.

The ideas of making sure students get enough physical activity, as well as good nutrition, are important aspects to overall well-being. While exercise is good for everybody, it provides a double payoff for children, because while they build a healthy base today, children also are laying the groundwork for a healthier tomorrow. Experts say it is important for parents to get involved and participate in their children’s activities, because children with involved parents are three times more active than children with inactive parents. Going for walks after dinner is a great way to start healthier habits!

Healthy kids make better students!!

Become a Sneaky Chef! Looking for ways to get more veggies into your child’s diet? Look no further! Try these painless tips:

• Chop veggies into tiny pieces and add to lean ground meat for making burgers, meatloaf, tacos or meatballs or put them into spaghetti sauce or casseroles.

• Puree veggies in a blender or food processor and stir into soups. Hint: Use vegetables the same color as the soup, such as cauliflower in clam chowder or yellow squash for chicken noodle soup.

• Lightly steam vegetables in microwave. Sprinkle w/ low-fat cheese and nuke until it melts.

• Puree peas or edamame and add to guacamole. Serve with baby carrots, celery stalks or chips.

• Set out a colorful array of veggies (grape tomatoes, carrot and celery sticks, sugar snap peas, and cucumber spears) for an after-school snack. Which does your kiddo like best?

Cool Facts: A strawberry really isn’t a berry! Why? Because, to be a berry it has to have many seeds INSIDE the berry.
