CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY MUSICAL SOCIETYSEASON 2016-17
Principal Sponsor
For over 180 years, CUMS has nurtured musical excellence inCambridge by providing challenging and unforgettable opportunitiesfor its vast and diverse student body. Now boasting 10 ensemblesand over 500 musicians, CUMS is the pinnacle of student musicmaking throughout Cambridge and is amongst the strongest studentensembles globally. Our 2016-17 season extends this legacy with itsbold programme and wealth of guest talent, promising to be one ofour most exciting years yet.
We are delighted to be joined for the first time by celebratedmusicians Sian Edwards, Thomas Gould, David Watkin and OliverCoates and to welcome back the sensational Paul Daniel, PeterDonohoe and Jamie Phillips.
This season includes a wide variety of music, ranging from Bach’sMass in B Minor, conducted by our Principal Guest Conductor, CUMSalumnus Sir Roger Norrington, in King’s College Chapel, to chambermusic performed in the intimate surroundings of Emmanuel OldLibrary. With programmes including new music by Mark-AnthonyTurnage and Mahler’s Third Symphony, conducted by Paul Daniel inKing’s College Chapel, we look forward to a year of epicperformances certainly not to be missed.
All excellent music making is accompanied by a camaraderieamongst players, and this is especially true for CUMS. Our membersforge firm friendships and have memorable experiences that will lasta lifetime. Many value the fun, friendly and supportive community ofCUMS just as much as the exceptional music opportunities that itprovides, and we know this will continue for years to come.
We hope you find much to enjoy in this new and exciting season.

Clarinet, CUMS Concert Orchestra
Performing with the CUMS Concert Orchestra has been a hugeamount of fun this year! We have performed a wide variety ofpopular repertoire such as Peer Gynt Suite No.1, BrahmsAcademic Festival Overture, Beethoven Piano Concerto No.1 andFinlandia. In Lent term we had a record-breaking concert in termsof sales, and our concerto soloist Nina Del Ser was applauded sorapturously she performed an impromptu encore. We have thebest after parties in Concert Orchestra and I have made so manygood friends being a part of the ensemble this year. I especiallylook forward to Beethoven 5 in Michaelmas Term!
Leonie Stevenson-Jones Flute, CUMS Symphony Orchestra
Performing with CUMS SO has created some exceptional musicalopportunities for me this year. Not only has it enabled me to play
the most exciting and challenging repertoire, but it has alsoallowed me to engage with some of this generation's finest
conductors. Meeting so many other musically driven studentsencourages me continually to raise my musical standards, andmost importantly it reminds me of my love of classical music.
Next year the Elgar Cello Concerto and Shostakovich SymphonyNo.5, to be conducted by Sian Edwards, promises to be a
particularly outstanding concert; I can't wait to get started withlearning the repertoire!

CUMS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA TOUR GERMANY Following successful tours to Ghent in 2014 and Amsterdamin 2015, in July 2016 CUMS Symphony Orchestra set off forGermany, where they gave three outstanding concertsunder the baton of Joel Sandelson.
The orchestra performed an all-Russian programmeincluding Tchaikovsky’s The Tempest and Rachmaninov’sSymphony No.2 to large audiences in Cologne, Andernachand Bonn. Performing in the impressive Bonn University Hallwas a particular highlight.
Outside of the busy concert schedule, there was time for anumber of leisure activities: climbing up Cologne Cathedral, watching the famous Andernach cold water geyser, visitingBeethoven’s birthplace in Bonn and, of course, sampling theGerman beer!
Helen McKeown, Tour Manager
CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY WINDORCHESTRA TOUR BELGIUMJune 2016 saw CUWO’s inaugural summer tour, where wegave four hugely successful concerts across Belgium, under conductor Adam Hickox. We performed a variedrepertoire of dedicated wind music and arrangedorchestral works including Nigel Hess’ East Coast Pictures,Ticheli’s explosive Vesuvius and Shostakovich’s Jazz SuiteNo. 2. In between the two halves our concerts oftenfeatured group and solo performances by members of thepercussion section, who make up part of CambridgeUniversity Percussion Ensemble. We were received well bylarge audiences in both the informal performances in aBruges town square and a bandstand in Ostend, and alsoin church concerts in Ghent and De Panne. Performing forthe incredibly hospitable people of De Panne on the lastnight was one of the highlights; we received a standingovation for what was undoubtedly the best concert ontour. In addition to the music there was lots of time for thegroup to bond and unwind, including a trip to a waterparkand a day off in Bruges where we visited a chocolatefactory and contested a CUWO scavenger hunt!

LE The Supporters’ Circle
Since it was founded in 1843, CUMS has provided uniqueopportunities for successive generations of Cambridgemusicians. It has immeasurably enriched the cultural lifeof the University and city and, having launched many ofthe biggest careers in classical music, it has played a piv-otal role in the musical world beyond. CUMS receives nocore funding from the University, and income from ticketsales does not meet the full cost of delivering a world-class musical education. The CUMS Supporters’ Circlehas been established to address this pressing financialneed. All those who value Cambridge’s vibrant musicalheritage, and want to maintain it for the 21st century, areinvited to join the Circle.
