2011–12 promises to be another vintage year of music-
making at Cambridge.
This year we are delighted to welcome to the CUMS
family the Cambridge University Chamber Choir – a
superb, small choir bringing together Cambridge’s finest
choral scholars. Highlights include a six-concert tour of
Bach’s St Matthew Passion with the Israel Camerata, and
USA performances at Yale and in New York.
In November our Principal Guest Conductor Sir Roger
Norrington launches our new recording programme,
conducting CUCO in a CD of music by Haydn and
Mozart. He is joined this year by two fellow alumni
conductors: Sir Mark Elder, Music Director of the Hallé
Orchestra, returns for the first time to conduct part of
Wagner’s Parsifal; and Graeme Jenkins, Music Director
of Dallas Opera, conducts the May Week Concert.
The CUMS Chorus goes from strength to strength
under Stephen Cleobury’s leadership. Forthcoming
highlights include Verdi’s Requiem at Ely Cathedral, a
gala concert with the Philharmonia Orchestra, and a tour
to Paris with Prime Brass. The CUMS Symphony
Orchestra looks forward to highlights with its Principal
Conductor Martin Yates including Shostakovich’s
monumental Symphony No.7 and Elgar’s Cello Concerto
with Raphael Wallfisch. The Cambridge University
Lunchtime Concerts continue to bring chamber music of
the highest quality to West Road Concert Hall on
Tuesday lunchtimes – admission free!
This year we showcase the best of Cambridge music-
making in London with concerts at the homes of Bob and
Elisabeth Boas and of Sir Vernon and Lady Ellis – turn to
page 18 for more information. CUCO ends the year with
a week-long residency at the Orpheus and Bacchus
Festival in the heart of the Bordeaux countryside, around
which we are able to offer up to 24 guests a summer
holiday of glorious music, fine wine and good company
on the luxurious Domaine Le Faure estate. Turn to page
20 to find out more.
I would like to thank the many people whose
involvement with CUMS makes so ambitious a season
possible: our volunteers, our conductors and our generous
supporters. But in particular I would like to thank the
wonderful young musicians of Cambridge University for
all that they do to enrich the life of the University, the
region, and the world beyond. The future of classical
music is in good hands!

Camerata – Israel’s leading chamber orchestra – for six
performances of JS Bach’s St Matthew Passion in
Jerusalem, Haifa, Rohovat and Tel Aviv.
CUMS Chorus and Prime Brass in Paris 10–13 April 2012 Following the success of recent tours to Prague, Tuscany
and Tallinn, the Chorus will join forces with Prime Brass
for a programme of English music conducted by Stephen
Cleobury at Notre Dame, Saint Eustache and the
American Cathedral in Paris.
Cambridge University Chamber Choir in the UnitedStates, 21–26 June 2012The Cambridge University Chamber Choir will make its
USA debut representing Europe at a world festival of
choral music at Yale University, New Haven. Further
concerts in the New York area are planned.
Cambridge University Chamber Orchestra inBordeaux, France, 30 June – 6 July 2012 Why not spend your summer holiday enjoying music
from Cambridge’s finest young musicians, exploring the
wines of some of France’s foremost chateaux and
enjoying luxurious accommodation and fine food in the
heart of the Bordeaux countryside? The Cambridge
University Chamber Orchestra will be in residence at the
Orpheus & Bacchus Festival at Domaine Le Faure, near
Gensac, from 30 June–6 July. Ian Christians (Clare 1962)
invites up to 24 guests to join him at his beautiful
eighteenth-century estate, which includes three
swimming pools, tennis court, croquet lawn, a private 16-
acre valley and a music salon containing Alfred Brendel’s
old Steinway. Concert programmes will include
Mendelssohn Symphony No. 4 ‘Italian’ and Beethoven
Violin Concerto with violinist Jerome Woodwark.
In the words of The Times, ‘I have been as close as I am
ever likely to get to having been on visiting terms with
the Margrave of Brandenburg, the Esterhazys, and other
aristocratic musical patrons of the past. Thanks to Ian
Christians, a modern-day benefactor, I have enjoyed the
extraordinary privilege of hearing world class classical
musicians playing in a private salon for an audience
numbered in tens, not hundreds, and seated on
comfortable sofas and easy chairs rather than in rows of
concert hall seating. For immediacy and intimacy this has
to be as good as musical holidaymaking can possibly get.’
More information about all our tours will be available in
October at www.cums.org.uk.

Cambridge University Musical Society
CUMS is one of the oldest and most distinguished
university music societies in the world. It offers a world-
class musical education for members of the University and
local residents, nurturing the great musicians of the future
and providing performing opportunities for over 500
Cambridge musicians every year.
The Society has played a pivotal role in British musical
life for almost 170 years. It has educated such luminaries as
Sir Andrew Davis, Sir Mark Elder, Sir John Eliot Gardiner,
Edward Gardner, Christopher Hogwood and Robin Ticciati,
has given world or UK premieres of works by Brahms,
Holloway, Lutoslawski, Maxwell Davies, Rutter, Saxton and
Vaughan Williams, and has exposed successive generations
of Cambridge musicians to visiting conductors and soloists
including Britten, Dvorak, Kodaly, Menuhin and
Tchaikovsky. Since the 1870s, CUMS has enjoyed the
leadership of several of Britain’s finest musicians,
including Sir Charles Villiers Stanford, Sir David Willcocks,
Sir Philip Ledger, and, from 1983 to 2009, Stephen
Cleobury.
In 2009 Stephen Cleobury assumed the new role of
Principal Conductor, CUMS Chorus, and Sir Roger
Norrington was appointed as Principal Guest Conductor.
Martin Yates, ‘one of the most exciting and versatile British
conductors of his generation’ in the words of The Times,
joined the team as Principal Conductor, CUMS Symphony
Orchestra; and a Great Conductors series was launched with
the objective of exposing CUMS members to a succession of
world-class visiting conductors. In February 2010 CUMS
entered another new phase of its development when it
merged with the Cambridge University Chamber Orchestra
and Cambridge University Music Club. In October 2010 the
Society launched the Cambridge University Lunchtime
Concerts – a new series of weekly chamber recitals at West
Road Concert Hall showcasing the University’s finest musical
talent. In 2011 it took on the Cambridge University Chamber
Choir. CUMS continues to provide opportunities for the
University’s finest student soloists and conductors by
awarding conducting scholarships and concerto prizes, and it
actively encourages new music by running a composition
competition and premiering at least one new work each year.
Recent highlights have included the world premiere of
The Sorcerer’s Mirror, a major new CUMS commission from
Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Sir Andrew Motion; the
opening concert of the 2009 City of London Festival; tours to
Prague and Tuscany; choral concerts with Stephen Cleobury,
the Philharmonia Orchestra and soloists including Bryn
Terfel in Cambridge and at the Royal Albert Hall; Mahler’s
monumental Symphony No.8 at Ely Cathedral under Stephen
Cleobury; Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem with Sir Roger
Norrington and Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius with Sir
Richard Armstrong.

Since it was founded in 1843, CUMS has provided unique
opportunities for successive generations of Cambridge
musicians. It has immeasurably enriched the cultural life
of the University and City, and, having launched many of
the biggest careers in classical music, it has played a
pivotal role in the musical world beyond.
CUMS receives no core funding from the University,
and income from ticket sales does not meet the full cost
of delivering a world-class musical education. The CUMS
Supporters’ Circle has been established to address this
pressing financial need.
All those who value Cambridge’s splendid musical
heritage, and who want the University to provide
opportunities for the finest young musicians of the
twenty-first century, are invited to join the CUMS
Supporters’ Circle. Membership of the Circle is through
annual donation to CUMS. There are six levels of
donation:

Donor: £100–£249 per annum
