Camden Military Academy opened its doors on September 8, 1958, with 95 cadets from sixteen states and four foreign cou
lass of 1959 graduated with nine seniors and dedicated their rst yearbook that states: As a new son to its father, Camden Milita
edicates its annual to its president, Col. James F. Risher.
In thinking of his inuence on our lives, we are reminded of the words of a great writer: The teacher who walks in the sha

If he is indeed wise he does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your own age 7 for the 2009 cadet names and their future plans.)

Mr. and Mrs. Scarborough, olonel and Mrs. Boland, andistinguished members of thexcalibur Society and friends andumni of Carlisle Military School, amden Academy, and Camden
Military Academy. On behalf of theorps of cadets, it is an honor for meo talk about our school and thankou for your unconditional supportf CMA.
Five years ago, I was certainhat I would never nd myself in anstitution such as Camden Military.urthermore, I can honestly tell you
hat four and a half years ago, uponrriving to this academy, I had notention of standing before you
making this speech as I am thisvening.
I am Lieutenant Colonellijah Kitts from Winston-Salem,orth Carolina. I am the presidentf our honor council, the Honorociety, the student body and
most importantly I serve as cadet
attalion Commander. Growing up,my father was absent. I did not have
father gure in my life, and I wasmischievous, to say the least. Mymother has gone above and beyondo make ends meet for me and myster, working 50-60 hour weeksom the day that I was born until
he present. My mother means themost to me in this world, and I alwayseek to nd ways to make her happynd proud of the young man she hasaised on her own. Needless to sayrior to my attending the Academy, Iasnt much to be proud of.
Over the summer and earlyall of 2004, I was living a veryelfish lifestyle that was headedown a dead end street. I personallyhose and afliated myself with aroup of kids whom I allowed to benegative moral inuence on me.was very ignorant and nave tohat my mother told me. My fatheras absent, and I was searchingearching for answers to certainuestions. I had no idea where tond the answers.
In late fall of 2004, I was expelledfrom my public middle school due tofoolish and immature actions. WhenI received the information that myonly option was Camden MilitaryAcademy I thought my li fe was over.Fortunately for me, thatpart of mylife was over. I was thirteen yearsof age when I was rst introducedto the life styles and ways of theAcademy. Upon arriving at CMA, Inoticed hundreds of young men, incrisp, pressed gray shirts with nearlyperfectly ironed military blue pantswith black stripes and shiny brassbelt buckle to top the uniform off. Iasked myself, are we at Fort Bragg? But little did I know that within a fewhours I would be a part of the corps ofcadets at Camden Military Academy, wearing the same sharp uniform.
My eighth grade year atCamden Military Academy wasnot anything to be proud of. Butnonetheless, in May of 2005 I made adecision that altered my life. I chose
to return to and nish my high schoolcareer at this ne institution. Althoughmy mother wasnt nancially stable, she facilitated my wish to stay, andthat has made the biggest differencein my life.
Freshman year was thestarting point of my new life. I wasa sergeant, and determined tomake something of my life andtime at Camden Military Academy.I started in the academic region, making Deans List every two weeksand even tutoring some of myfellow cadets. By the end of the rst
semester I had attained a 4.0 GPA,and wanted more. I moved on to mynext area of personal development, leadership. After Christmas breakof my freshman year. I was giventhe opportunity by SGM Greene tobe the squad leader of third squad, second platoon in Band and StaffCompany. That might have beenthe rst time in my life when a manat Camden Military Academy hadlled the void in my life - the void of afather gure, someone that believedin me and believed that I could makea difference in this institution.
During my sophomore yearI was given another chance atbecoming the leader I was meantto be. I was made platoon sergeantof second platoon, and in charge ofyoung men of ages varying from 13-18. I accepted the challenge to leadby example, not only in formations, but in the classroom, as well. In Mayof 2007, I received the highest GPAin the sophomore class and the nalGeneral Order of the 2006-07 schoolyear announced that I was going to
be the First Sergeant of Band andStaff. Once again SGM Greene putfaith and trust in me, and I did notfail. In return, I, and other membersof the chain of command, were ableto make a positive difference andreceived Honor Company for theyear.
On May 18th, 2008, the nalGeneral Order marked the high pointof my entire seventeen years of life.It was announced on that day, that Ihad been chosen to be the BattalionCommander for the following schoolyear. I cannot express to you howmuch that meant to me. It was mymothers birthday, and she could nothave been prouder.
So I return now to thestatement I made earlier. I wassearching for answers to certainquestions for which I had no ideawhere to look. I stand here beforeyou now, fully decorated, and nowfully knowledgeable of what I wassearching for. I was searching mainly
for a reason, a reason to stand outin a crowd; a reason to achieve theunimaginable; and a reason to dosomething with my life. You see, itsnot that I didnt have anybody thereto answer the questions. Its that Idid not have the structure neededto answer those questions. Over thepast four and a half years I have beentruly graced by Camden Military. Ihave been put into an environmentthat demanded a change in my lifeand an environment that supportedthat change. Every member of theFaculty and Staff at the Academy has
provided me with an incentive to bewho I am today. I have bonded withfellow cadets and have establishedrelationships that I know will last therest of my life. I have been given theopportunity to become the best leaderI can be, and have been guided theentire way. What I am trying to sayis this: Camden Military Academyand everyone involved have givenme the foundation for the rest ofmy life. Please forgive my modesty, but I have become a distinguishedyoung man that I, myself, respect. There is no doubt in my mind that
my experience and the knowledgeI have been given, will help meface whatever obstacles I mightencounter. In closing, I would l ike tomention that I plan on attending TheCitadel in the fall. Some say that theknob year at The Citadel is one ofthe hardest tasks to accomplish. Iproudly stand before you saying this:I have condence in myself. I amcondent because Camden MilitaryAcademy has given me a vision ofthe man that I have the potential to

resentation, as well as through several horse races. The Key Club, lead by former admissions director Gene McCaskill, collected canned goods for o
ood drives. The sixth annual Headmasters Golf Tournament was once again a big success. A visit by CSM Martain will always bring a smile to the

After my Marine Corps stint I attended Clemson for one year, ran out of funds and returned home to Miami, Florida to attendthe university there. Before long I became a Cadet Major in theROTC program. On commissioning, I entered the Air Force andremained for 30 years. When I started at Carlisle at 11 yearsof age, my life was shaped, and my value system established, during those next six years, but it was not then apparent to me.
No part of my life was more inuenced by any activity or series of events, likemy life at Carlisle.I entered the Air Force with my ROTC commission in 1953. I had found my
fes work. It was, and is, a ying business, and my eyesight precluded pilotaining, so I became a navigator. For the next 30 years there were unpredictable
wists and turns, opportunities of various kinds. Got the essential masters degree, stint at the Advanced Management Program at Harvard, attended professional
chools, and served from the squadron level to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. AND,assure you, I didnt have any more natural intelligence or magical skill set,
han what I had when I left Bamberg, and what you will have when you leaveamden.
What does this mean to the Camden graduating class of 2009? I hope it willlustrate that you may not realize the value, and your ability to capitalize, on thene education you are now receiving, and the accumulative effect of your years
n the Camden system. You are learning more than you know, a lot more than academics, and you arematuring in a disciplined environment, and receiving a Gift that you may appreciatemmediately, or not for several years, but the payoff will be there. Carlisle andamden, two great contributors to the lives of young men who are aware of thebvious differences of not going to school in their neighborhoods back home, butor whom the Gift looms large on their future horizons.
With every good wish for your future success,
