Fr. Jose P. Eloja, MISHEPHERD’S CARE PROVINCIAL’S CORNER

Across the Philippine Province, a lot of activities were arranged in relation tothe celebration of the feast day of St. Camillus de Lellis in the month of July. One of them was the medical mission conducted in three areas of Antipolo,

Rizal, Philippines by a big delegation of medical staff from St. Mary’s Hospital, Lu-odong, Yilan and from other Catholic hospitals in Taipei, Taiwan together with a largenumber of local medical staff and volunteers. At the conclusion of the medical mis-sion, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between St. Mary’s Hospital andSt. Camillus Medical Center.

Another highlight related to the celebration was the recognition of outstandingemployees of our socio-health care institutions in the Philippines and loyalty serviceawards for some of our employees in Taiwan; in Indonesia, we had one brother whotook the solemn vows and was ordained deacon the following month; and in the Arch-diocese of Karachi, Pakistan, the feast of St. Camillus was celebrated for the first timetogether with the Lay Camillian Family accompanied by Fr. Mushtaq Anjum.

But the whole Order was saddened with the demise of the 60th successor of St.Camillus as Superior General. Due to certain disease, Fr. Leocir Pessini died on the24th of July at a Camillian community in São Paolo, Brazil. He had just visited thePhilippine Province a year ago and was much loved by the religious and lay collabo-rators with his presence. May the Lord grant him eternal rest in His kingdom.

Let us continue to pray for one another and ask the Lord for the grace to alwaysrecognize and serve Him in the sick.

The feast of St. Camillus celebrated last July 14, 2019at the St. Camillus Seminary in Maumere wasmarked by significant events: the 10-year anniver-

sary of the Indonesian Delegation, the renewal of vowsof 8 religious, the admission to the novitiate of 6 candi-dates, the first profession of vows of 6 novices and thefirst perpetual profession.

The Indonesian Delegation feels blessed by the Lordfor the good missionary work done in a very short periodof time. Ten years ago, our first seminary community wasformed by four people; today the group can count morethan 70 candidates.

Since the beginning, the main objective of the Dele-gation was, and still remains, the vocation promotionand formation of candidates so that the dream of St.Camillus to see his institute spreading in all the countriesof the world has reached another happy reality with In-donesia.

During the celebration, which was presided by Fr.Luigi, Delegation Superior, the first perpetual profession

of Scholastic Mensianus Aman was a significant andtouching moment. The newly perpetually professed isconsidered the beginner of the second generation of In-donesian Camillians following the four Camillian pioneerswho, in the year 2000, were sent to Manila for their stud-ies and formation. They returned back in 2009 and wereordained in their own country, Indonesia. Now, all of themform the team of formators of our two seminaries inLedalero and Ruteng. From now on, we believe and hopethat the Delegation will be enriched every year with a newgroup of novices, temporary and perpetual professed andluckily, new ordinations.

The short history of the Indonesian Delegation wascharacterized by some significant events which markedits growth: the canonical recognition by the ConsultaGeneral in 2011; the blessing of the first St. Camillus Sem-inary in Maumere in 2012; the opening of the secondseminary in Ruteng in 2015; the beginning of the novitiatein Nita in 2016; the blessing of the Theologate in 2017;the opening of the St. Camillus Social Center in Misir in2018; and the launching of the “Mineral Water and Ge -lato San Camillo” in 2019.

At present, the Indonesian Delegation counts 6priests, one deacon, 14 temporary professed, 6 novices,42 seminarians in philosophy and 20 aspirants.

Behind the formation task, the Delegation is alsocommitted to pastoral ministry with the chaplaincy at theGovernment Hospital of the city, the weekly visitation tothe sick in some villages and summer parish ministry withthe seminarians. Some social activities are organized likefeeding program for hundred needy children and a fos-ter scholaship program for students with financial diffi-culties.

After 10 years, the Indonesian Delegation is stilllooking at its future with hope, enthusiasm and the de-sire to continue in multiplying the “one hundred hands”of charity which St. Camillus recommended to his reli-gious.

Certainly, other good opportunities will be uncount-able in the years to come and we believe that with thepower of the Holy Spirit and the inspiration of St. Camillus“everything will be possible.”

FATHER LEOCIR PESSINI was born onMay 14, 1955 in Joaçaba, city of the Stateof Santa Caterina in Brazil, from a familyof Italian origins.

He made his first religious professionamong the Ministers of the Sick (Camil-lians) in 1975, the solemn religious pro-fession in 1978, and was ordained apriest in 1980.

He has always cultivated a great passion for the Camilliancharism, the care of the sick, the humanization of the health world, and the teaching of bioethical disciplines.

Fr. Leocir loved to divide his biography into three large arches,to identify three strong and fundamental moments in the constructionof his life path.

The first 15 years have been completely dedicated to serving thesick (1981–1995). During the first 13 years, he worked as a chaplainat the Hospital das Clinicas of the Faculty of Medicine of the Uni-versity of São Paulo (Brazil).

In the second stage of this journey of another 15 years (1995–2010), he performed administrative functions: as a university lecturerand scientific director of some magazines (Bioetikos and O Mundoda Saúde). He assumed responsibility in the educational sector ofthe Camillian province of Brazil, in the União Social Camiliana, abody that supports the Camillian university in Brazil. In this periodhe attended courses for the license and the doctorate in moral the-ology and bioethics at the Pontifical Catholic University of San Paolo– Faculty of Theology Nossa Senhora da Assunção. As part of civilsociety, the church and the Brazilian government, he played the roleof national coordinator for health pastoral care at the conference ofthe Brazilian bishops (2004–2007); member of the National Com-

mission for Research on Human Beings in the Federal Government– Ministry of Health (2005–2008), Bioethics Consultant to the Fed-eral Council of Medicine (2010–2014).

The third stage of his life journey was characterized by the serviceof authority among the Camillian confreres (2010–2019) in two dif-ferent moments: the first, as provincial superior of the Camillianprovince of Brazil (2010–2014) and the second, as Superior Generalof the Camillian Order.

In June 2014, the 58th General Chapter of the Camillian Orderelected him Superior General of the Order, 60th successor of SaintCamillus de Lellis. He visited all the communities of the Order, metthe confreres at all latitudes (39 nations), sharing with them effortsand hopes in the great challenge of embodying the charism of caringfor the sick and teaching others to do the same!

After the discovery of the disease in September 2018, he spentseveral months of therapy in Rome and from March 2019 he movedto San Paolo (Brazil). The care offered by the doctors, the brother-hood of the confreres and the affection of his parents and sistersaccompanied and consoled him in his encounter with the good andmerciful face of God the Father!

He died at the Camillian community of ‘Recanto San Camillo’ ofGranja Viana (Cotia - São Paulo - Brazil), on the night of July 24,2019.

Leocir, some time ago, concluded a short essay with this reflec-tion: “I feel this expression of the famous poet T.S. Eliot (1888–1965): ‘We must continue to search, but at the end of our researchwe will return to the starting point and know this place for the firsttime.’”

We are grateful and grateful to the Lord, God of Life, for theCamillian life and vocation of Fr. Leocir! R.I.P.

KARACHI – The feast of St. Camillus de Lellis, the patron saint of the sick, nurses, doctors, hospitals and healthcare workers, is celebratedon July 14 in the liturgical calendar of theCatholic Church. The Order of the Ministers ofthe Infirm (Camillians) and the Archdiocese ofKarachi celebrated the feast of this great saintof charity for the first time in Pakistan.

His Eminence Joseph Cardinal Couttspresided the Eucharistic celebration. Fr. SalehDiego, the Vicar General, the Diocesan clergyand the religious from various male and fe-male congregations were present.

In his homily Fr. Mushtaq Anjum, a Camil-lian priest, said that St. Camillus brought “newhope and courage” to our families and strug-gling youth. St. Camillus suffered neglect ashe lost his mother, Camilla, at a young age. Helost his father, Giovanni, in his teens. Suchneglect and lack of paternal and maternal af-fection resulted in his misbehavior. However,he took courage with the grace of God andbecame a renewed man after his conversion.

Mr. Waqar Naeem of The Jesus Youthshowed this conversion in a short tableau andhow St. Camillus loved and cared for the sickpeople.

The Lay Camillian Family members broughtofferings and the choir sang beautiful spiritualsongs as they led the congregation intoprayer.

After the Eucharistic celebration, the heal-ing service continued. Fr. Shakeel Gulzar, Fr.Aamir Bhatti, Fr. Nazir John, OFM Cap., Fr.Noman Arif, Fr. Shehzad Peter and Fr. Mush-taq led the community into prayer, askingGod’s healing and protection for the sick andthe suffering.

The priests laid their hands on the sick, prayed and anointed them with holy oil. Thisbrought many blessings to the sick, to theirfamilies and to the church.

After the celebration, sweets were distrib-uted on this beautiful joyous occasion.

It is tradition for every Catholic school to celebrate theMass of the Holy Spirit at the start of academic year toprepare the seminarians for another year of studies

through the guidance of the Holy Spirit.Last August 13, 2019, Tuesday, the Christ the King Mis-

sion Seminary celebrated the Mass of the Holy Spirit foracademic year 2019–2020 presided by the Rector, Rev. Fr.Carlos Lariosa, SVD, and concelebrated by other priests. The presider was assisted by our beloved deacon and for-mator, Rev. Almar Roman, MI. In his homily, Fr. Lariosa gaveus tips and knowledge on how to pursue and strengthen

our vocation. Before the Mass ended, Br. Romualdo Abu-lad, SVD, the College Dean of Studies, gave us instructionsand reminders about the school rules and regulations.

We, Camillian seminarians, explored around thewhole seminary compound while Rev. Almar attended ameeting with the other formators.

One realization: we are in this nice institution broughtabout by a common goal—to be a priest. A vocation isnot formed in the school; it is formed within us and ourability to respond, cherish and apply every rule in the for-mation. – Sem. Arjon Bryan V. Yamson

ST. CAMILLUS SEMINARY

Just around this time of the year when most of theseminarians are in a buzz for their annual out-of-towntrip. Even before it was announced, there had been

many speculations as to the destination for this year’s out-ing. It was then decided that this year, it would be at Rev.Almar Roman’s home province of Bataan, a place rich inhistory and natural sceneries. The seminarians were can-didly excited as they set out for the trip. A long and whatwas supposed to be a taxing five-hour ride turned into afun-filled road trip among the travelers. The planned routeinvolved stopping at the famed Subic Bay for an earlybreakfast, then again departing to the historic parish ofNuestra Señora del Pillar in Morong, Bataan, where in thecompany of the canonically crowned image of the VirginMary, the seminary rector Fr. Ruben Mandin celebrated theSunday Mass. They were warmly welcomed by Sem. Fran-cis Vigo from the Diocese of Balanga, who then escortedthem to Caeli Sea Resort in Morong. There, the activitieswere diligently planned and executed to instill in each andevery seminarian a spirit of unity and brotherhood. The oc-casion was also graced by the presence of Frs. Wilson

Peñaranda and Bon Arimbuyutan, former formators andmembers of the community back in Marikina. Now, theyare serving as hospital chaplains at the newly establishedCamillian presence in Bataan. Pleasant and high-spirited,those were the adjectives that best describe their two-daystay at the resort. Following their stay, they made a quickdetour to the national historic landmark of Mount Samat, most commonly known in Filipino as the Dam ba na ng Kag-itingan built to commemorate the valiant Filipino andAmerican soldiers who fought and died in the Battle ofBataan during World War II. It has a 448 steps’ footpaththat zigzags across the mountain and at the top stands theMemorial Cross where, if one ought to reach the colon-nade, one has to ride an elevator in order to reach the top

Prayer for Ancestors: According to the Chinese custom, August, the 7thlunar month, is when the spirits come out from hell and instill fear to thepeople; thus, the people make some ceremonies to chase them away.Even the Church adapts to this custom by organizing prayer ceremoniesfor the ancestors at the hospital, handicapped center, senior center andnursing school.
