Letter From Zem It is always a pleasure to have the opportunity to write this opening letter and share good news with you, our Compass readers. There is a lot to celebrate. The Centennial Celebrations have continued strong all year and it has been such a pleasure to re-connect with friends from the past, see alumni gather and reminisce, and have the time to reflect on all the milestones accomplished.Speaking of milestones, our Campaign for Camp El Tesoro is moving right along. Thanks to a challenge grant from the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation, we are closer to our final goal of raising $10.7 million to renovate and preserve Camp El Tesoro for generations to come.It is with this same spirit of looking forward to the future that I am also sharing with you, our readers and supporters, I have announced my plans to retire from my position as President/CEO of Camp Fire First Texas.I will be working closely with the Council Executive Committee and Board on a timeline and details of a transition to new staff leadership sometime during 2015. This is an exciting time of growth, discovery and renewal for the organization as well for me.Thank you for your guidance and support over my tenure at Camp Fire.

Step Up Summer Program Thrives in 2014Camp Fire Step Up School Completion Program provides year-round support to high school students who are at-risk. Remaining active in the program year-round helps keep students engaged in school, graduate, and prepare for the future.

This summer, the Step Up program worked with 23 students age 14 – 17. The summer is set up a little differently as it combined the traditional school year group activities with more service learning projects, like volunteering with Beautiful Feet, The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, The Fort Worth Nature Center and Camp Fire Diamond Hill Station; and field trips like touring TCU campus, obtaining on-site job training at Starbucks and Boomerjack’s, and visiting the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens and SiNaCa Studios for a glass blowing demonstration. “The Step Up summer program, using Thrive, has been fantastic! Not only has staff been equipped with a powerful tool, but youth have embraced Thrive and are beginning to apply it in their own lives. I strongly believe that they are entering a new school year with motivation and a clear vision of what they want to achieve,” said Camp Fire Step Up Program Specialist, Calene Peake. The summer program wrapped up on August 15 with a “Spark” Talent Show. Step Up teens shared their Sparks with younger youth at Camp Fire summer day camp. Spark talents included an art demonstration, dancing, singing, essay presentation and a violin concert.

Later, during a reflection time, the group articulated what they’ve learned and how they will apply it for next school year. Five of the 23 youth served this summer will continue their pathway to thriving with the Step Up School Completion Program this fall.

Thrive Theory of Change methodology is integrated into the summer programming. In doing so, Step Up youth were able to:

1. Identify their sparks that support, and serve as a catalyst for, positive personal growth.

2. Discover how their brains learn and practice a “growth mindset” that positively responds to challenges and setbacks.

3. Practiceself-reflectionskills, for assessment of strengths and risks.

4. Build goal management skills to select appropriate goals and to respond to challenges in reaching them.

Camp Fire Begins Impact Study of Universal Pre-KWith the implementation of universal Pre-K in FWISD, child care programs serving low income children may realize a significant financial impact when the 4 year olds that typically attend these programs transition into the public schools. The Morris Foundation, Richardson Foundation, Community Foundation of North Texas and Ryan Foundation care about the possible impact and are supporting this effort to learn what this could mean for our community so that we can respond to the resulting gaps/need. Camp Fire is working with the Center for Nonprofit Management to complete a study by October 2014 that will respond to the following questions:• What will be the impact of universal

Pre-K on childcare in Fort Worth?• Will the 36 Camp Fire School Readiness

facilities remain financially viable?• Will there be any areas of need (i.e.

public policy change) created as a result of universal Pre-K?

The results will be made available for the public in late 2014.

Camp Fire Child Development Center and Demonstration School

The Camp Fire Child Development Center has repositioned itself as a community demonstration school. Through observations, in-classroom shadowing and internships the organization can further impact quality early education.

Early childhood teachers and directors* may schedule a time to observe best practices being put into action at Camp Fire CDC with a focus on specific areas of curriculum implementation (Conscious Discipline, Frog Street Press). Through an intake process, Kathy Wymer, center director, is able to determine the goals of the visit and coordinate the best visit-type for the observer.

*No visitors or interns are left alone with children. Only people with background checks are allowed to shadow in the classrooms.

When a Meeting and a Meal Mean MoreCamp Fire provides rentals and catering at the Camp Fire Resource Center on Meacham Boulevard. Because of support from the room rentals in 2013, Camp Fire First Texas:

• Connected more youth and adults to nature

• Made amazing strides with youth providing thousands of service hours to the community

• Provided affordable professional development to early child care providers

• Helped children in our community become better prepared to start school on-track with their peers

Your help and support is appreciated to share the value and outcomes of this resource. When you come to Camp Fire for a meeting, it isn’t just adding to a corporations’ bottom line. It helps the youth in our community. “I love working with someone that responds so quickly and is always there when we need them,” said Crystal White, BNSF Railway/BCD Travel.

When raising children, some hear the word “discipline” and immediately jump to “punishment.” But discipline is training to support proper behavior. This is true for the Conscious Discipline framework Camp Fire implements – it supports young children and their adult caregivers to raise their emotional intelligence and allow for personal growth.Conscious Discipline is a part of the classroom curricula used in the Camp Fire Child Development Center. It also extends out to the 36 child care programs that are a part of School Readiness, which strives to increase the quality of early education in low-income and underperforming communities. The curricula are an evidence-based comprehensive emotional intelligence and classroom management system that integrates all domains of learning (social, emotional, physical, cultural and cognitive) into one curriculum.

It encompasses the personal growth of both the adult and the child—raising the emotional intelligence of the adults in a child’s world, while also informing the social-emotional development of the child. By presenting the Seven Powers for Self-Control the adult’s relationship with conflict changes creating proactive, rather than reactive, moments using critical thinking, reflection and problem-solving. The Seven Powers for Self-Control empower the adult to utilize the Seven Basic Skills of discipline. The skills, in turn, help children become productive members of a social group, or “school family.” Teachers systematically create a family climate through routines, rituals, safety and classroom centers that support social-emotional learning and add meaning to academic content.

Question: What was the inspiration for starting An Artists’ Christmas?

Sunnie LeBlanc: I was asked to propose a fundraising idea for Camp Fire by Zem Neill and the board. Many charity events existed but there was not an art auction. It seemed to be a very attractive idea.

Q: Who helped to make the first few years of the event happen and successful?

SL: The first task was to find a space where the art could be showcased with good lighting and foot traffic. I met with Lynda Shropshire and she proved to be so important to the event. Anne and Bob Bass and Mitzi and Bill Davis were instrumental in helping gather major donors and each couple also were the Honorary Chairs in the first two years.

I also got a core group of friends and fellow volunteers to help that included: Betty Rutherford, Lynn Ranelle, Marilyn Kobs, Renee Walters, Terri Hollander, and Margaret Shiels, to name a few, and of course my husband Dr. Ray LeBlanc and our three daughters.

The honorary committee, that included every Fort Worth museum director and gallery owner, were a magnificent addition and added credibility as we searched for artists willing to donate those first years.

Q: What is your tie to Camp Fire?SL: My three daughters joined Blue Birds at Trinity Valley School when we moved

to Fort Worth in 1976. I became involved with the encouragement of Margaret Shiels, and soon led the groups with help from many of the mothers.

In the early 1980s I was asked to develop a home alone program manual and began a multi-week program to help address the unique challenges facing latchkey children. A national program was a very gratifying feeling.

I taught OBIS (Outdoor Biological Instructional Strategies) at summer camp and took my group to El Tesoro many times and served on the Camp Fire Board of Directors.

Q: Why did you think this event was a good fit with Camp Fire?SL: Many of us love to paint and do art projects with our Camp Fire Clubs. I am

an artist and my connections are more in the arts community in Fort Worth. At the time, no one else was doing an art auction. Voila! This link provided Camp Fire with an entirely different fundraising base.

Q: How many artists and art the first year?SL: The first event included 60 pieces that included Christmas trees

decorated by celebrities as well as artists. Another standout from that year was an Andy Warhol that Shandy Fenton worked diligently to procure for the event.

The Christmas trees included one by Bob “Daddio” Wade and one that was so 3-Dimensional that it had to be moved down the middle of the street.

Q: What, to you, has been the most memorable piece of art from An Artists’ Christmas?

SL: So many stand out - I would say the Ed Blackburn oil painting, the ceramic totem by Trish Wise and the Christmas tree donated by Mitzi and Bill Davis. The tree was decorated with over 100 images from the Kimball Art Museum collection set in small gold frames.

After year two, there are many outstanding pieces of art donated for the auction. The art selection committee and jurists continue to accept the best art.

The catalog continues to be one of the best parts of the event! It was very important to have the annual collection publicized as a tool for selling the art as well as encouraging new artists to donate.

Q: Have there been any surprises over the years?SL: The first years, we had the exhibition on display in the atrium of the

bank building and had to move all of it to the ballroom of the hotel across the street. The volunteers were unbelievable. It was a parade of art on dollies, sculptures hand carried and then all of the art had to be displayed in the ballroom.

But it has been no surprise that Camp Fire has added the online auction, as well as grown the event. One thing about the leadership of Zem Neill is that she is a leader for today as well as for tomorrow. Each year a different volunteer chairman and committee lead the planning of An Artists’ Christmas. The one consistency has been Zem.

This year, you can be a part ofthis a significant milestone.

Camp Fire First Texas is closer to reaching the $10.7 million goal to renovate Camp El Tesoro. We received a challenge grand from the J.E. and L.E. Mabee foundation for a gift of $250,000. In order to meet the challenge, we must raise $1,364, 349. We have commitments for $906,289 of that amount and need to raise $458, 060 by April 1, 2015 to meet the match requirement.

Camp Fire has been raising funds since 2010 to renovate and update Camp El Tesoro, the camp owned and operated by the organization for 81 years. The 223-acre camp has been the summer home for more than four generations of campers.

The Campaign for El Tesoro has already completed the first phase of renovations, including a new challenge course, 12,500 square foot covered riding arena and equestrian center, dining hall (WoHeLo Lodge), health house, office, store ,multi-purpose sports court, and renovations to Horizon Lodge. The second phase began with the addition of eight cabins that opened to campers this summer. Remaining projects include adding 12 more cabins, repurposing the Louisa Haun Lodge for a Welcome and Outdoor Education Center, creating an Arts Village, adding staff housing, pool renovations and improving infrastructure.

The next set of six cabins (three duplexes) will break ground in late Fall and welcome campers in summer 2015!
